Crusty in a corner, not! 11 years ago I had an old ranger that was the same way, kept going even after being beat down 14 other owners for the first 15 years of it’s life. I got it rebuilt the engine &trans, then ran it for 8 years at 120,k / year family came and it went, boy do I mis that truck!

For future reference the third digit in that style VW VIN is the model year. That started in '65 or '66 and prior to the numbering change VW VINs were sequential and the model year was determined by which range of numbers your specimen fell into. The rusted out mess in the wheel well is the charcoal canister for the evaporative emissions system that started in '71. The Pine Cone Beetle had to be either a '71 or '72. It has the vents behind the quarter windows and the tail lights aren't round. Vents appeared in '71 and the tail lights changed to the round ones in '73....

5150 several years ago I work for junkyard picking up cars out of peoples yards I went and grab the 59 Ford something or other was buried like that........ I picked up the rear end with the wheel lift and then put the car up pile of rims underneath it... Then pulled car up on the flat bed. With the winch......you can get some plywood 3/4 inch. Put it over the holes then pull the car back you should be all set... With the winch on the truck chain the truck to tree.. Or you may break the parking band in the truck....all so when using a cable under pressure alway lad blanket or some over the cable just n case it let’s go the cable could cut your head off and you don’t wanna do that......... just be careful your brake lines on the rear end be really good if you had a Jayhawk like the tow if you could just lay around the rear end and then put a chain and put it in the tree I’ve been around son!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(((((((seen a few things))))))) Or you could ask Oscar the grouch and his friends to help you pick up the car and push it over the holes that’s Second option take care JUNKMANDO ps with age comes wisdom and knowledge

I've wanted a Beetle since I was a kid in the early 80s. Unfortunately I've never had the money to own one. I really hope before my time is up, I get to one a couple along with a Fastback, Squareback, Rabbit and Dasher. I wish I could get a running, driving pre 1968 Beetle for free. I'm not that lucky.

I don't know how to work on cars and also don't want a money pit. I don't have the physical ability or patience to work on cars either. It takes thousand of dollars to get a car in good running condition. Parts are very expensive too, especially when the body is in bad shape. The floor pans are usually rotted out and engines are not easy to find and are very expensive as well, especially to get it running right. And a Beelte engine usually needs a lot of work if you can find one. If I wanted a junk car to fix and had the money, I'd have done it long ago. I can barely afford to fix the vehicle I have now and I have to pay someone to work on it.

Where did you find this Beetle at? Believe it or not my dad abandoned a 72 Beetle back in the early 80s. He said the engine started having issues and it wouldn't run anymore so he had to park it. Then he got a truck driving job and kinda just forgot about the old girl and bought a new car. Now nearly 40 years later, he told me he regrets just abandoned it and he wishes he would have fixed it years ago. We was just talkin about this not too long ago! Wow
