exactly. And one of his funnier songs was "Thank God and Greyhound". My Dad used to paly that one everytime his mother-in-law went back home to Mississippi by Bus....lol
He also plays this on a 12-string guitar. Another 😢person you’d never imagine playing this is a female guitarist named Charro, known as a “hootchie-cootchie” girl. She’s also a comedienne
I'm so happy someone finally mentioned Charro. She is one of the most overlooked Masters on Spanish guitar. There's so many good videos of her for them to watch. Hope Amber features her on a Female Friday.
I saw both of them play the "William Tell Overture " on the Acoustic Guitar. Roy's version was much smoother, but you can't take away the prowess of Glen's playing.
For some hot banjo sounds, check out Roy Clark and Buck Trent playing Dueling Banjos. Two masters stepping it up. He has an Oklahoma connection too - he lived in Tulsa where there is an elementary school named for him.
There is an amazing woman that goes by just the name Charo who most people only know from doing talk shows and guest roles on old TV shows back in the 70's but was also a world re known classical guitarist.
Yes!! So much more than the cuchi-cuchi girl we grew up with! Classically trained from the age of 9, one of the greatest Flamenco guitarists ever. She's so amazing ❤
"Yesterday, When I was Young" is an absolute favorite of mine. The older you get and the more regrets you accumulate the harder it hits you. Their a little young for full impact but can experience his beautiful voice.
After his concert at the FL Strawberry Festival in the mid-2000's, Roy Clark's bus was having issues leaving the FL Strawberry Festival & I helped his manager move the barricades to get them out. He personally came to the front of the bus and thanked me for helping. He was a good man.
Whether it is the fiddle, the mandolin, the banjo, or the guitar, few are as accomplished as a musician and as a person who can be funny while he is being brilliant.
You've never heard of Roy Castle, have you?!?! He could literally play ANY instrument, as well as dance, sing, & act, & he was also a pretty funny comic too!! Probably the most talented 'all-round' performer Britain ever produced!
Virtuoso = Roy Clark. He is one of the very best EVER . I see Spain and Flamingo dancers thank you Roy! The Spaniards know a thing or two about guitars. The hand beating on the guitar is akin to the Flamingo Dangers heels pounding the floor …pretty awesome.
Roy is also a very good vocalist. You need to check out "Yesterday When I Was Young", "Thank God and Grayhound" and "Right or Left at Oak Street ". Thanks so much for today's pick and reaction.
I vaguely remember Roy Clark from Hee Haw as I was quite young but had no idea he was a genius guitar player. I mean, wow!!! Thanks for reacting guys. x
Roy is Eddie Van Halen’s and Jimmy Hendrix’s favorite guitarist. This man is out of this world. He plays Harp, Fiddle, Banjo, and Mandolin. The most UNDER RATED guitarist ever. You HAVE TO go back and watch His 12th Street Rag instrumental and be sure to watch his face and eyes too during it lol.
I've been waiting anxiously for you to check out Roy Clark. He plays guitar, banjo, fiddle... And is incredible. Oh and he does sing too! And he's so funny!!!! There's a duet with Roy and Glen Campbell as well!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
FYI-Roy won the National Banjo Championship in 1947-he was 14 years old. He won it again in 1948. He was touring with a band at 15 and made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry at 17!! The rest…as they say…is history. RIP Roy Cheers all
Amber and Jordan Roy Clark can play just about anything with a string. Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle. You name it. You may like to see SRV and his brother Jimmie play (Pipeline) on the same guitar at the same time. Keep up with the good work 😎👍
Gee Roy Clark and Glen Campbell were some of the cleanest, meanest guitar players who honed their skills in the 1960's. They were shredding on their instruments in the early '60's - Roy Clark playing Twelve Street Rag on the Jimmy Dean show in the early 60's is a must see. Seeing Roy and Glen play the same guitar at the same time is amazing. Roy had a number of country hits, and was a regular members on the show Hee Haw. The thing about him is if the instrument had strings and you gave him a week he'd not only play it, he'd master it. So many rock, metal and shredders held both them in such high regard if not awe.
Roy Clark was on the show Hee Haw every week. He was a country singer. I think he also played in movies. He was big when I was growing up, in the 1970's. Both of my grandparent families watch him all the time.
Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona wrote Malagueña in 1933. It originally part of a larger piece (Suite Andalucía). He based it on a solo piano piece by Louis Gottschalk called "Souvenirs d'Andalousie" ("Memories of Andalucia"). You can find lots of classical guitar performances of Malagueña on CZcams. One good version is by Pepe Romero. There are also lots of versions of "Souvenirs d'Andalousie."
Being a goofy lovable character on Hee Haw. The average Joe Shmo didn’t know Roy was so talented. He’s great on the banjo. Since you loved this I’m gonna tell you guys yet again to check out Glen Campbell plays The William Tell Overture (acoustic). You won’t be disappointed.
Similar to Flamingo dancing Spanish Guitar music. I'm 70 so I've experienced Roy Clarks complete works. Really underrated by most, but he truly was one of a kind.
Jay and Amber, I'm so grateful you finally got the chance hear the amazing Roy Clark. Even though I'm only 18, I have known about Roy since I was about 4 or 5 years old through watching the show Hee Haw that Roy hosted alongside Buck Owens. I got the chance to meet Roy when I was in 3rd Grade and got to interview him. He was an incredibly humble, kind man and one of the most genuine people I have ever met. I got to be around him several times and visit with him, and I will treasure those memories forever. When Roy passed away in 2018, they played a live version of this song at the end, and it was like watching him perform for us one last time. Not a dry eye in the crowd. Roy was just about the most amazing multi-instrumentalist I think there ever was. He was almost completely self-taught in every instrument he played, and he had such a God-given talent to be able to master any instrument he picked up. He's often extremely underrated in the guitar world because he was Country but also because he infused comedy into his playing and people took him less seriously. Thank you for helping keep his memory alive, and I hope you enjoy diving into more of his music!
It makes me mad that Roy is rarely included when the conversation turns to Best Guitarists of All Time. He should always be a part of that conversation
And his fingers never leave his hands! "Yesterday" is one of his best. "Thank God and Greyhound she's gone" is another great Roy Clark song if you need a bit of a laugh. Saw him in concert once and you could tell he was having a blast.
Back in the 1960s and 70s I was a radio disk jockey in Albuquerque. Roy was on the bill for one of country road shows my station sponsored. I was there when he played "Malaguena" live onstate with the flu and a 102 degree temperature. Sweating like a stevedore, he played it FLAWLESSLY. Wonderfully nice guy and a towering talent!
Love, love, love Roy Clark. He was among a great group of guitarists/musicians in his time, including the likes of Jerry Reed, Glen Campbell, and Chet Atkins. You'll find tons of his videos here on CZcams. His vocals were great as well. Two popular songs of his you should check out are "Yesterday When I Was Young" and "Thank God and Greyhound".
You witnessed the greatest guitarist of all time! Even Eddie Van Halen said so! RC mastered anything that had strings/strangs! You also witnessed the birth of the guitar tap/slap which was meant to sound like Flamenco dancers shoes! So, for banjo video do "Dueling Banjos" featuring Buck Trent. For fiddle "Orange Blossom Special" with 12 yr old Jimmy Henley. And for the funny side of RC react to his Johnny Cash "Folsom Prison Blues" cover, it is hilarious! He was a comedic master!!! Rest in Paradise Mr Clark!🤠
Thx for including Roy Clark's massive skills. Roy Clark and Buck Trent did an acoustic banjo duo. Mad priceless skills. Some non PC moments but the music, oh my word, the music!
His talent is legendary, and he had such a warm, endearing stage presence. When Roy Clark performed, you always got the impression that he truly loved being there for you. I grew up watching him and Buck Owens playing together on "HEE-HAW", great memories.
@@stevearmstrong1430 me too. For a while I thought I must be the only one suggesting Roy, as it has taken them months to get to him. From the ‘millions’ of comments clearly I was not alone!
Roy Clark was huge in the 1970's, appearing on many TV shows. He also sang and killed it at comedy. He and Buck Owens were the anchors of Hee Haw which started in 1969 to replace the Smothers Brothers Show. Hee Haw was a huge success, lasting into the early 1990's. There is a famous clip online of Roy Clark playing guitar on The Odd Couple. One of the greatest guitarists ever to live.
PS Roy Clark was on the Muppet Show which is another cultural touchstone from the 70s to the 80s. Have you watched The Muppet Movie before? Good for adults and most kiddos!
A great performance by Roy Clark and Jimmy Henley/Orange Blossom Special from the country variety show Hee Haw. This video is amazing and is "Must See Good!"😮😊
Roy Clark is a treasure, his playing is some of the best ever, great to see him featured on your channel. As others have mentioned, you really should consider featuring Charo playing this tune as well. While she's known more for her comedic appearances on TV, she's a truly underrated flamenco guitarist. If you can, do feature her on a "Female Friday" some time. You'll be surprised at how well Charo can shred.
He's had a starring role on a 70's show my parents liked. I would drift into the room when Roy Clark played. He made it look easy which tells you how fantastically skilled he was. Great signer and all around "Good Guy"
Malagueña is originally composed by Cuban Ernesto Lucuena for piano. It is part of the Andalusian Suite and is a great romantic classic. My mom was a classical trained pianist and loved when she played this. It was such an intense song that we used to have to take all the pictures off the piano before she started otherwise they would shake off she would play so fast. You really need to hear the piano version.
Roy is an absolute legend. First saw him on Hee Haw. His duets with Johnny Cash, and dueling banjo's is fantastic. He is a character and an absolute legend. This song and the gentle use of harmonic notes is amazing.
i only saw him live once, and it was in the 1990s, so he was probably a good 25-30 years older than he was here, and he BLEW MY MIND. i didn't know much about him either, except that he was on Hee Haw when i was a kid, and i walked out of that show a solid fan. He was just SO FAST and SO GOOD. He was 100% a legend. You must watch more of him!
He could do it all. I'm 66 years old and loved all the, 60's and 70's, rock and roll but Roy Clark was the most amazing guitarist I ever saw. Believe me, all the artists at that time knew how good he was. He was the, Terry Cath, of country music.
Another instrumentalist to check out is Tommy Emanual simply amazing. I am fortunate enough to have seen Roy several times over the years. He never disappointed
Roy Clark was an immensely talented musician and funny as all get out. A true master of a lot of stringed instruments. His talent was incredible!! He was my Dad's favorite musician and my Dad turned me on to Roy and his talents. I am always and forever will be in awe of his talents.
Saw Clark at a state fair in mid-1970s when I was a kid. What a talent. ....."Yesterday, When I Was Young" and "Thank God and Greyhound You're Gone" are my faves of his vocal songs. He was also a co-host with Buck Owens of the TV show "Hee-Haw," a rural theme variety show.
He did a performance of the same song but with just an acoustic guitar on an episode of the "Odd Couple." It gives you a different perspective on Roy Clark and his playing abilities.
There is a scene from the TV Show "The Odd Couple" where he plays this on an acoustic guitar.
Love that show and that episode in particular.
I like that version better. The acoustic tone is a lot better
I prefer his full acoustic version too. Here it is.

Roy Clark legitimately may be the most underrated guitarist of all time. He deserves to be in the GOAT conversation but rarely if EVER is
I agree 100%. I would rate him higher than Clapton or Hendrix.
Underrated until people SEE him . . . . .
The fact that Rolling Stone didn't even include him in the top 100 guitarists of all time is criminal. He's easily top 10 material.
To be fair, he was actually rated pretty high.
Can't agree with this statement more. It's pure fact.
Roy Clark used his humor to disguise the fact that he had overwhelming stage fright. He was the country version of Eddie Van Halen.
He apparently gave Eddie van Halen guitar lessons when Eddie was a teenager. I hope it's true.
I was about to say that you can hear Eddie play like this on Spanish Fly or Little Guitars
exactly. And one of his funnier songs was "Thank God and Greyhound". My Dad used to paly that one everytime his mother-in-law went back home to Mississippi by Bus....lol
The fact he was doing it all with humor showed his talent.
He was legendary. He was comical in his playing. Check the Hew Haw skits and see how funny he could be!
He also plays this on a 12-string guitar. Another 😢person you’d never imagine playing this is a female guitarist named Charro, known as a “hootchie-cootchie” girl. She’s also a comedienne

Roy and Glen Campbell were two legendary guitarists from the 1960s and beyond. They died about 15 months apart in 2017-18.
I saw both of them play the "William Tell Overture " on the Acoustic Guitar. Roy's version was much smoother, but you can't take away the prowess of Glen's playing.

"Yesterday, when I was young", is one of the greatest songs ever.
If you want to experience his singing, Yesterday, When I was Young is one of the most beautiful, melancholy songs ever recorded.
Oh yeah...my Dad loved that song. Haven't heard it in a long time.
Mickey Mantle requested that Roy perform that song at his funeral. Roy obliged.
Such a beautiful yet sad song, it is a reality check that still takes my breath away.

On the TV show, "The Odd Couple" with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, he plays this with an acoustic guitar.

Another I love by Roy Clark is Yesterday When I Was Young. I hope you play it. He sings that song.

It was played at mickey mantles funeral per mickeys request.
Roy has never got the credit due him for his skill on the strings. Dude was a BEAST. Epitome of "attacking" the strings with a his strumming.
One of the best pickers to ever live! He and Glen Campbell would often have good-natured picking contests between each other!
What a legend! He lived with his wife in Tulsa Oklahoma and just recently passed in 2018.

He is known for his singing as much, if not more than his guitar playing. He is awesome!!
