"I don't want to hear about the economy either!"
When The Sopranos aired back in 1999, it's safe to say that it got off to a tremendous start. As many fans and critics raved over the shows impeccable writing, acting, the cast of characters and their growth, the series' directing, and cinematography. But as time went on, views, interest and ratings began to fall when it came to everyones favourite family to hit the small screen on Sunday nights. But why did this happen? Did audiences just lose interest in The Sopranos? Were there other television series that came about during The Sopranos' runtime? This is the "Rise and Fall" of The Sopranos!

If I'm being genuinely honest, I would say it's been one of the most impactful shows of my lifetime, and therefore, there are so many episodes that stand out, that it made me feel like I was a part of the action, lol
With HBO Max in the past 3 years I've watched the series 9 times. Everytime i see something new and laugh at new jokes.
Agree
I watched the Sopranos in Denmark!
Me and my wife leave it on as background noise in the house when we're doing stuff and like every other day I'll look for a second and see something I forgot happened that changes my entire perspective on some characters.
@@Justen1980 that makes me want to erase myself
There was and is never a downfall of the sopranos
It is the greatest show ever
Except for the episode wit the black music label guy. That wasnât too fun tbh.
Tru dat
@@austinmc12Thank you, but Iâve recorded in DENMARK
The only downfall was the show losing the comedic element which is what made it amazing in the first place
@@Damidas I mean but thatâs jus kinda what happens towards the end of mob shows/ movies. All the fun and games catch up to them later on an shit ainât sweet. But I hear u tho the good vibes of season 1 an 2 are one of a kind fr
The single reason why the Sopranos fell off was due to the fact that it was never revealed how many years Phil Leatardo spent in the can.
đđđ
If I had to guess, maybe 19 years
@@austinmc12 or possibly 21 but definitely not 20
The problem with the Sopranos were the plots that they didnât reconcile. Two in particular, we needed a follow up on the dealer Quickie G and we wanted to know the health status of the hotdog vendor who was too generous with onions.
Still a better âfallâ than most shows that have a decline.
The later seasons have aged well tbh, better than I remember them when they first aired.
Fllllllluuuuucccck the ratingsâŠ.. The Sopranos is the greatest show ever.
The fall came about due to Tonys own hubris. He ended up becoming everything that he spoke against. He judged everyone that came before him and all the mistakes they made and he ended up making those same mistakes.
In Tony's monologue in the pilot, he states he's at the end of the thing. He knew all along, therefore we knew all along.
There was never a fall with the show. Itâs the greatest of all time.
I think the black guys who beat up Little Paulie and did a few other things were the unsung heroes.đ
There's just one pilot and it's the first episode of the series. They're not pilots every season. They're premiers.
You oughta know sweetie
@@HOTD108_i knew THAT was coming!
Gonna say the same
I mean he also said "fatally killed" in his previous video. Fuckin' parakeet.
What, you gonna back talk me now?
When I rewatch the series, I watch every damn episode. No skips and no fast forwards. Every minute is precious. The only problem I had was the long wait between the last seasons. Which seems to be a normal practice now.
Can't even imagine tapping out during the run of this show!
It's ironic that the show was being criticized of the stereotype of Italian Americans as the show was pointing out of the stereotype of Italian Americans
It took a toll on all our respected bottoms
Now thatâs an image
In this house Johnny Cakes is a HERO! End of story!
it's surprising to me that Italian-Americans are still beating that drum about mafia films giving a bad name to Italians. Italians are considered by most to have the best directors Scorsese/Coppola, the best films Godfather I/II/Goodfellas, best actors Deniro/Pacino, and the best tv show. Plus mafia films have given careers to dozens of great Italian actors. Take the win
The Mafia is real Italian culture, the pride of our people.
Honestly they should embrace it because the alternative is Fascism, or the very based but very irrelevant italian commie party (Read Bordiga)
Let me tell you a couple three things 1) Oz was an HBO show that came out in 1997 and was groundbreaking in some ways. 2) whatever
Oz was awesome!!!
Now thatâs an image
@@kasiahroy2082 Vitoâs favorite show
@@A_r78heâs a come from behind kind of guy
Also Omar's favorite show as he literally watches it in an episode of The Wire
I thought you were going to talk about when Tony climbed up the stairs is Mom's house and then fell down
Oh rimshot!
An interesting idea for a video would be analyzing the failure in success of the Sopranoâs in Italy.
Ratings do not mean a show has âfell offâ
Honestly. It was a constant topic of conversation in the media and for everyday people for pretty much itâs entire run. Everything has peaks and valleys. Sometimes they were in the valley. But mostly it was peaks
my fav show
Small correction but the you keep calling Seasons premieres Pilots. Thereâs only 1 pilot, a shows debut episode S1, ep 1.
I don't think you could say that The Sopranos had a "rise and fall" as a TV show. Let me explain...
Look, even the greatest TV shows slip and slide through peaks and valleys. And in this regard, The Sopranos is certainly no exception. But every time you thought The Sopranos was gonna fall off the cliff, David Chase always found a way to remind you why this show was an undisputed classic. And this year, we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of the show's debut.
By the way, let me go one step further: I think the final ever episode -- Made in America -- is one of the greatest series finales ever made. Enough said.
Speaking for myself,I couldnât find Desperate Housewives to be a suitable substitute for The Sopranos;itâs like trying to substitute broccoli for a cheeseburger.
Series 5 is when Tony starts down on his downfall. It's a fantastic series.
A pilot episode is a âstandalone episode of a television series that is used to sell a show to a television network.â Itâs basically a testing ground for a series as to whether a show will be successful. However, it is NOT the first episode of successive seasons. The first episode of each season is just that - the first episode. Each season does NOT have a pilot episode, simply a first episode of said season.
I'd say that it fared better in terms of how it went out than my personal favorite tv show of all time (Rescue 911) did in its final seasons.
It got screwed over by the network four different ways:
(A): they slashed the production budget without telling anyone working on the show.
(B): they forced the producers to rely on segment reruns to fill out episodes and seasons for the last three years it was on tv.
(C): they bounced it around on the schedule for two seasons
(C): they cancelled it with no warning.
And this was a show that was still doing 6's and 7's in the ratings when it was abruptly canceled for no reason.
We caught fire in a bottle with the sopranos. The actors, the directors, David Chase and the American people were all at the perfect place at the perfect time to create this masterpiece.
Season 5 was one of the best seasons also that was supposed to be the final season but they convinced David Chase to do one more season
Listen to him. He knows everything
Sopranos Theories is out here acting like a free Agent!!
Just imagine if Joe Columbo were still alive when the sopranos was on tv, it would've been quite something to see an actual mob boss throwing a fit via his civil rights organization over the show for its "negative depictions of italian americans".
Hard to believe a groundbreaking show like Sopranos had to struggle in its final season to stay on. That and another brilliant groundbreaking show like The Wire had trouble staying on from its first episode. But lucky for us both completed and will be enjoyed for decades to come.
I think the show got better with every season.
To be honest the only thing I disliked in The Sopranos was all the dream sequences. They were just boring and too raunchy to me.
While watching the series for the first time, the thing i noticed that i didn't like about it was the lack of finality with stories. Like the Slovak dude that Paulie and Chris kidnapped never came back to bite them in the ass with the Slavic mob, or Dr. Melfie's SA never had a resolution, just things like that bothered me. Other than that, it's a great show.
That's kind of the point.
Things just happen, and then you die.
I never thought the storyline of the show got weaker and always thought the obscure dream episodes were great. The show just kept getting more serious and less funny. Way too many scenes in hospitals, funeral parlors, and cemeteries, I don't wanna see that
Carlo: Catching, not pitching?
Herc: Pitching, not catching?
The biggest reason was that Paulie couldn't take more betrayal
It was like he was stabbed in the haaat!!!
Lets be real. There is quite a bit of filler but heaps of killer đ€
BEST FUCKING SHOW EVER MADE!!! PERIOD!!!
The Vito storyline was one of the best of the series
To me the series started its decline with Tony blundetto and the class of â04 storyline. A Tonyâs cousin named Tony? Guy gets out of jail and wants to earn legit? Come on⊠he basically started a war that lasted until the finale and died. Seasons 5, 6A and 6B to me are tough to rewatch. When I think of sopranos I think of seasons 1-4. Seasons 5, 6A and 6B are like a weight thatâs being carried too much.
Tony's demise was started by Paulie he snitch so many times on many people to Johnny Sac and allow Johnny to manipulate him over and over he took advantage of his relationship with Paulie which caused a lot of tension between the two families, all those issues overlap into Johnny run as boss but what put the final nail in the coffin was his inability to handle his cousin Tony, he went against NY which was his demise of his entire crew/family. Tony fall was he didn't take the war serious and his crew didn't either Bobby was out buying Toys and Sil was caught lacking. I don't think Tony's fall would have came if these events didn't occur Tony's bad choices led to his fall including when Johnny wanted Tony to whack Carmine Tony made very bad decisions which always caused him issues as the boss.
The Sopranos never really fell, the flavor changed and some people struggled to accept it
As ever, absolutely theory-free. Ever thought about changing the name of your channel?
YOoo my intro to the show was the last few minutes of the BEAR episode! đ WTF
I felt so betrayed by that bs that it took me years to give it another try.
Sompranos never fell. What are you talking about? Greatest show.
You mean The Sombreros.
Insane to claim the wire was inspired by the sopranos ⊠the corner, the unofficial wire prequels, was created around the same time as sopranos season one. It ludicrous to claim sopranos had any influence on the wire. Shameful shit.
Homicide: Life on the Street, whatever happened there
The Cuban Missile Crisis..."That's why you gotta live for today." said Georgie, before he took a viscous beating from Tony.
The Sopranos series took a turn, after 9/11. In the following years, everyone around the world was gripped by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Can you see the parallels between Tony growing up in the 60s, and Tony dealing with terrorism within his community in Newark?
Those guys buying credit card skimmed numbers from Christopher, gave Tony some concern. So much that he even ratted them out to the FBI.
Could this also be a reason why some people stopped watching Sopranos?
5:00 wasnât the delay had to do with the actors not getting paid enough
Just a note. A pilot is an episode made to prove a show's potential to a network. Typically it's the series premiere, though sometimes they are unaired. The first episode of each season is the season premiere, not a pilot.
Iâm actually surprised the 5th season is where it took a dip in ratings, I thought it would be the 4th season for me, Season 4 is where the show tone down on the Violence & Controversial storylines in my opinion, and I felt was the slowest season, Season 5 is actually my 2nd favorite season cause they brought back more of the Mob elements of the show which the 4th season got away from
I like both Season 4 & 5. :) To me 4 was incredibly engaging with its character work, but 5 was also great with it's mob machinations. Rusty Milio was one of my favorite characters, loved his scheming in the background.
Guess the momentum can't keep. Swings and roundabouts, apples and bowling balls.
Ka-putz.
7:06 lol thats when I watched the show for the first time
I knew nothing about it not even the memes đ
Good video
Itâs because all they did was argue and annoy each other and get fat. David chase purposely made the characters darker and less likeable on purpose to remind us theyâre bad people.
If you want to make characters realistic and unlikeable, along with a darker overall show, donât be surprised when people donât enjoy watching it??
(Tonyâs breathing, wheezing and accent during the final two seasons is so insufferable it made me want to turn it off)
$13M per season, I think, hurt JG. Living well through eating well causing weight gain along with substance abuse, and personal demons, I believe, did not help matters with his heavy breathing and wheezing while working.
OZ did it first
5 episodes to show that Tonyâs a ruthless mob boss ????
He ran a man down, broke his leg and then had him beaten and assaulted afterwards in the PILOT EPISODE, I think the picture was clear
Sopranos made HBO into the powerhouse it became. How old are you? Because The Sopranos was a fucking juggernaut in its day that was pretty unprecedented for a show on paid cable.
I mean, I donât think the Sopranos ever really fellđŻ
I thought this video would be about the Soprano family.
10th rewatch over here and the finale is still dog shit that was a complete copout.
Also, defend them all you want, but the dream episodes (other than Funhouse) were also terrible.
There are a lot of edits that are weird and awkward.
Honestly, I think the fifth season was the 3rd best season, behind 3 and 4. I would rather watch season 5 than 2 or even 1. I'd certainly rather watch it over season 6 part 1.
Still the greatest show.
How much content can bro make on this show? No diss
The Vito storyline was really not necessary, they could have done it within an episode.
For me The Sopranos and The Wire are the best shows. Surprisingly Narcos didn't excite me and I believe Narcos is a mid series it bored me off.
Lotta bawlls badmouthing the sopranos, especially now
Love the Sopranos. In my top 3 shows of all time. However, itâs not âperfect.â There was horrible editing at times, some character inconsistency and epic plot holes.
When the actress who played Livia died I knew the series was going downhill.
Gana's Corner
How is the wire influenced by sopranos at all?
The Soprano's entire familyi fell because they were ethnically cleansed out of Newark. After the 1968 riots, their entire family fled Newark to protect their kids. They lost everything. Houses, businesses, the churches they built, the restaurants & taverns they went to. They never recovered.
The 1968 riots would have been like the 1804 genocide if they could have gotten away with it. There is no way the Soppranos could be considered the oppressors in this situation. They are the victims.
For David Chase to ignore this fact and paint a false narrative is despicable. A lot of people actually believe the Sopranos are somehow in the wrong here and not just protecting themselves.
Fall thatâs laughable one of the all time greats
How is season 5 bad?
Fall????
Everything you said about season 5 is what made it great though???
Memes and Instagram accounts? Who gives a shit about those?
It does have SOME flaws, but no other show is even close to being in its league. I don't care how much people love the other copy cat "anti-hero" shows. None of them can compare.
Desperate Wives getting 20 million views. That right there makes me have little hope for society.

Only Sopranos miss was the gay romance
Ya, but that actually happened in the NJ mob. That's what got the real mobsters of NY and NJ talking about the show.
Actual FBI wiretaps caught members of the mafia talking about how realistic the show was.
People don't understand how significant Sopranos plot lines are within the context of the NY mob.
@robertlee4172 dude first of all you're all over the place. There is nothing you could tell me about the mafia that I don't already know. How that correlates to the necessity of focusing on a half season arc of a gay romance is beyond me however
