    Speed painting is a popular topic in the warhammer hobby, but can you still achieve high quality results In a short amount of time? In this week's episode, we challenged ourselves to speed painting miniatures for the #JunestealerCults challenge!
    Expect to learn how we approach painting when we know we have limited time, and how that changes the decisions we make. How we were able to get the results we did on our miniatures and how we painted them, plus some hacks for efficiency and pointers on the corners you can cut along the way!
    Also in this episode, Joe updates us on his personal projects, and we tackle our listeners comments, questions of the week and of course go through all of the community submissions for June's painting challenge!
    And, don't forget to stay to the end for our parting hobby hack on tackling dry tip when airbrushing!

    Thanks Joe for the kind words about my Rockgrinder, I really appreciate it. It was my first time really going for OSL as well as doing that monochrome style on a large model. Oh and given James's appreciation of Aliens earlier in the episode, it's worth pointing out that there is a Weyland Corporation freehand logo on the rear of the vehicle as my own nod to the greatest action movie of all time.
    And yes, Lyon airport is essentially several light years from the city. I was there a few months ago and had to ride in a taxi facing backwards. I essentially entered a motion sickness fugue state by the time we arrived at our accommodation.

    I can now attest to some advise you given previously. I'm entering a small painting contest in a couple of months, so I'm giving it my absolute all. It's by no means exceptional work, and I cannot see me even placing, but it's producing blends and highlights that I didn't know I was capable of doing, absolutely the best work I've ever done. It's proving very eye opening.

      I haven't been in the hobby long but I buy a bunch of kits to kitbash with and having all the parts on hand is crucial for me so I've never understood pile of shame. It feels like a pile of opportunities. Idk I've never understood why having a lot of parts is a bad thing. I built a judiciar with about 6 kits and he's a one of a kind model and I wouldn't want it any other way.

    I’ve once heard of a pile of shame referred to as a Library. That’s how I like to think of it now. I bought the models because I want to paint them and while I may have other projects going on I can always go to my Library and pick something that I have excited to paint just like I would grab a book to read from a personal library.

    James' hobby space must be tiny because it's covered in all sorts of Rube Goldberg hobby contraptions 😂 Jam jars full of water, giant wet pallettes, ice cube trays and now a saucer with a paper towel on it. I imagine his flat must be like stepping into the Warhammer version of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.
    An alternate for this week's hobby hack for reasonable people is to have a q-tip, wet one side with airbrush cleaner and use that side to clean the needle and the dry side to dry it, then blow through a bit of air with no paint. It also has the added value of being much smaller than a tea saucer 😆

    My two part hobby hack for the airbrush is just have a soft toothbrush in a cup of water at your airbrush station and it will take about 3 seconds to clear off any tip dry even if you have a needle guard on. Part two of the hack is learn to use an airbrush properly and tip dry doesn't occur very often anyway 😂 Between those two tips you'll spend all of about 20 seconds clearing tip dry per hour or so of airbrushing.

    I've also heard the term "Mini Cellar" before, which I think is apt.
    You never know when you'll build the mini/drink the wine, but when you do, it will be the opportune time and not a moment too soon.
    I think the "shame" in "grey pile of shame" comes from having spent the money but not done anything with it.

    Legions imperialis marine army: My plan is to build, spray undercoat, ink wash, then dry brush the whole army and fully base it all. So I will be able to play with it and then go back and paint it unit by unit, but still have a very consistent looking force. It also means that if I burn out after the first stage, when I come back to it all it will seem less of a mountain to climb and be less over facing.

    I am a translator and agree 💯 with Joe. Black metal, especially the more atmospheric bits, are amazing for background noise. I don't want to be singing along or thinking about lyrics and since I'm in text analysis mode while working, I find them extra distracting. Same is true for naps.

    Hi Guys, love the podcast, been watching for a while. Good to see Joe back, I like the guests but the OG 3 is best. Touching on the music while painting topic, what are each one of your favorite songs(currently) to listen to while painting? And on the inverse what cant you listen to while painting, I for example love the browning - dragon but I cant listen to it while painting...the urge to rock out is too strong

    And then you've got a fun way to differentiate your dudes! You've got the "old blues" and the "new blues" based on how old their armor is

    The Batch buying paint is surely standard. Paint matches are a nightmare for us decorators when Mrs. Miggins is insisting that it's definitely the wrong colour despite it being from the exact same brands exact same range in the exact same finish with the exact same Ral fqn number Mrs. Miggins. I'm new to all this and only started watching last year and love the show. Joe is a great guest. You bois must have pulled a few strings to get someone like him on.

      Thank you! I rest my case! There is total reasoning to my apparent madness of buying a full rack of paint! No excuses now! Hahahah you have been watching a year but think Joe is a guest? Or is it that him and Paul cannot exist in the same physical space otherwise the time continuum will break!

      Yes you are justified with bulk purchasing paint. I went to the local hobby store to buy paint for a set of Sabine Wren armour and cleaned them out of each colour needed. They kept trying to tell me that these bottles go a long way then they clicked it wasn't a miniature😳🤣🤣🤣

    How do I know how much to thin my paints? I follow what the internet says but I dont actually know if I am over/under doing it.

    • @SiegeStudios
      @SiegeStudios  Před 29 dny

      What you want to see on the palette is solid opacity but for the paint to have viscosity so you can move it freely and it covers with one pass.

    • @758richy
      @758richy Před 29 dny

      A helpful rule of thumb that I was taught (assuming you're use a wet palette) is that for base coating, you want to just thin the paint enough that it will self level when you pass a brush through it on the palette. If it is not thinned enough then it will create "walls" in either side of where the brush passed through it and won't level itself back out. Obviously there are plenty of situations where you want to thin it more, but just getting it to that self levelling point will allow you to get smooth coverage while still having good opacity so you only need to apply one or two coats. (Paints vary a lot, so some colours will need more coats regardless.)
      In addition to this tip, make sure you load your brush properly. You want the belly of the brush filled with paint, otherwise it will start drying in the bristles really quickly and end up not going on smoothly, leaving texture on the model and/or you won't be able to paint for long before the brush "runs out."
