    As a child, I found out the hard way that the Pirate Ship doesn't float. And the sails seemed to fall apart in the water.

    The boat sets that included actual floating hulls were my childhood envy. So i had to find some of the hulls on ebay to buy separately. Not cheap!

    In the old days the boats would be supplied with separate (heavy) keel elements - leave these off when playing on the carpet, but attach in the bathtub. I think these can make many of the shown sinkers float as well.
    Lookup set 311 on for instance.

      True that. I remember I had a lego boat from the early 80. It had a keel with some metal part wrapped in plastic to lower the COG. Point is that whatever Lego thing, made in plastic, would for sure float. What's not sure if the COG is above or below floating plane. If it's above boat would overturn.

      One caveat: I've never washed any brick newer than 2018.

    Technically, they all floated in the sense that none of them dived to the bottom of the pool. It is just that some of the ships preferred to float on their sides rather than their bottoms.

    the taller boats/ships need a "keel" (the part of the ship that is submerged in the water) to counter balance all that weight. In other words the centre of gravity is way too high above the water line, at which point if the ship were lean over due to high winds or rough seas it would never recover and simply keep listing until it's basically upside down. But it's Lego so i think you already know that.......just needed an excuse to play with your boats in the water XD.

    The pirate ships would've floated if you gave them an upside down triangle shaped base for stability. It's why the cargo & coast guard ships floated so well

      The cargo, coastguard, tug boat and trawler have a hollow base which is why they can effortlessly float.

      @@StartBricking Probably a deep keel that reaches down far enough to counterbalance the tall mast. You could try to add some metal to the bottom, I'm really curious if that would keep the pirate ship from capsizing.

      This balances the top (doesnt stop leaking though :))

    LEGO just stopped caring if their boat models were buoyant it looks like lol. Kinda makes sense, the older boats that do float all have 1 custom large keel piece to be watertight, and they came with those heavy weighted blocks to help with displacement.

    Looks like they all float. Not all float upright, the balance is off. But they are all buoyant.

    The reason the large ones did not float upright is that they lack a keel fin. The moment caused by the ship’s high center of gravity is balanced by the fluid force on its large surface area. I can almost guarantee that if you built a keel fin on the pirate ship it would actually float.

      It is definitely worth trying. I also thought of a balast brick from Lego boats from the 80s. The pirate ship will definitely sail longer than in this video! Thanks for your comment!

      A keel alone won't solve that problem, they would still want to flip over. Those old sailing vessels require both a keel and ballast to remain upright.

      Nah, that pirate ship in the video is the one from 2011 or so, not the older ones. Older ones probably float though.

      Maybe he tried to make it float and move the first time without showing his hands but it didn’t. Then he probably cut that one and then tried it again, this time with hands on camera to “stabilize it” before letting go, to no avail.
