    Great video! Don’t break the slats though. They’ll come in handy. You just have to pull the loop string up and slide them out. Then rethread the loop string down through the slats. I’m shortening some of mine to use the extra slats where I have broken ones.

    I bought Levelor blinds several years ago. The directions were so confusing so I didn't even try to tackle shortening them. I hung them up and left them there with the long strings and about 10 extra slats all bunched together. Fast forward about five years, I decided to look at videos to see if could grasp how to shorten the blinds. I stumbled upon your video and said to myself, I can do this. It was such a success and the whole family could tell the difference. All I can say is "what took me so long" and Thank You

    Thanks for this video. All this time I thought the lift cords had to be even at the rail end ! I have a method to save slats. or replace them .
    I group the slats below the broken slat together into a tight stack. then pull the cords. I took a homemade hook made on the end of a thin rod, and pulled doubled fishing line through the lower slats so there is a loop to pull the free end of the cord out the bottom of the stack. The slots on mine were too narrow for knots or tape to clear. Figure out a way around that, and you can run a single fishline.

    Thank you - I just want to take a minute to give my feedback to you. I really appreciated having these videos to reference the repair that was needed on our blinds. the extra slats I never knew how to remove when I hung the blinds about 10 yrs ago and the cord had dug into the cradle on the far end from the pull cords which caused the cord to fray. it was a mess to fix but I couldn't have gotten anywhere close to finishing in the 4 hours it took me had I not been able to reference these very detailed videos.I may have missed a side not (you should add it) - to use a helper when trying to melt the two cord ends together! the parts i ordered on your site came very quick and while the rollers keep popping out of the cradles the overall process was simplified buy having your site at hand. the videos were clear and very understandable. so thank you! I will be sharing your site on my social pages!

  • @learninladyhomesteader9374

    This is the only video I watched on this but after watching I noted some seriously quicker ways to do it after the first one. 1-You don't need to break the blinds...they slide quickly out 10 at a time just by maneuvering the strings off and pulling the whole stack out the side. 2- You don't need to put the 3 plugs in the bottom in until you are done cutting them and ready to shove the strings back in there. 3-Gather the entire "ladder" ribbed chord and cut all the little pieces at one time. No need to be snipping every string individually. Much quicker that way and more exact too to just chop all the loops while holding onto the chord you're NOT supposed to cut to make sure you just cut the ladder cord. ;) Great way to save $15/window though super easy!

    This was easy because the person has easy access to the blinds. They are in front of them in the right height. . Mine is over a large window over my kitchen sink where the blinds can not come all the way down. If you don’t have ideal conditions and brand new never messed with blinds, then you won’t have to spend hours. I did. I could not sit or stand inside my sink, of course, so the blinds wer not always straight coming down. What to do with the faucet? It was very difficult. The video is great but don’t expect it to be that easy if you have too much to cut, blinds are Longer than here and the ladders have a tendency to get knotted.

    • @fixmyblinds

    I must have done something wrong. When I tilt the slats the bottom bar also tilts. My blinds are different though so I think it makes more sense for me to push the lift cord AND the ladder strings though the hole without knotting them and the re-insert the plug with the lift string only. Will revisit at the weekend. Hope this helps someone else.

    • @fixmyblinds
      @fixmyblinds  Před rokem

      Hi there! If the ladder strings get tucked into the hole on the bottom rail and they are uneven or pulled too tight, it can cause the bottom rail to also tilt. When you put the ladder strings into the hole, be sure that the rail is laying flat and that neither of the sides of the string ladder are being pulled too tightly. It can take a few tries to get it just right.

      Hi Corey, It is pretty strange to actually break the slats, but since there is still cord going through the holes in the slats, there's no way to just slide them out. This is the easiest and quickest way to shorten a blind that have that double looping lift cord. To shorten blinds that just have a single lifting cord, please see this video: czcams.com/video/veaKoSB_DW8/video.html.

      Yes, I'd really like to have a method of saving and later replacing the slats. I plan on cutting some to make room for a portable AC vent hose, but want the option of restoring the slats later. I wonder if I could cut the lift strings, and after making the adjustments thread through again, and tie a knot to repair the cut string. I think I'd have to be careful where to tie the knot so it doesn't interfere with the lifting operation.

      After looking at it some more, I see that the dual strings that thread through each pulley are such that one of the two strings is anchored a the very top bar, strings down to the pulley, around it and up again to the top bar, and then down to the tassels on the sides. That means it's really a single cord, not two with one end at the tassel, and the other inside the top bar. I think the key is to somehow get inside the top bar and free where it's anchored, and thread it though. I just don't know how easy it is to get inside that top bar. I think the whole thing needs to be taken down and laid on a table to work with.

      Okay, I tried taking it apart, but it's really hard to get to where the cord is anchored. I have a better idea and easier idea. Back to cutting the lift cord, but I think the key is to cut one of the two: the one that leads to the top anchor point, not the one that leads to the tassel. And cut it high as close to the top bar as reasonable. The reason is because the whole rest of the cord will move around as the blinds are raised and lowered, but the part near the top bar anchor will never move. This way the knot we tie will not have to pass through any of the slats and possibly get stuck.

      I was able to pop the pulley out through the bottom of each plug by inserting a small flat head screwdriver to each side of the little rod part of the pulley. I used a hammer and held the plug while lightly hitting the screwdriver and it popped out pretty easily. I was also able to just hit the screwdriver with my hand, while holding the plug in my other hand and that worked also. The little rod part of the pulley does slide right out, so be careful not to lose it. Once the pulley is out, the looped lifting cord comes right off the pulley and can be pulled up through the plug, and up through the middle slots of the blinds as far as you need to go. Slide out the damaged blind(s) and re-insert good blinds (you can re-use the extra blinds that you remove from the bottom if you are shortening the length. Shortening works the same as the video shows.
      To put it back together, just feed the looped lift cord back through (mined was fed by alternating to the right and left of the "ladder strings"). Feed it back through the plug and while holding the pulley in one hand, feed it around the pulley. Push the pulley back up through the bottom of the plug, and then pull firmly on the pulley cord above the plug (while holding the plug) and it snaps right back into place with a couple of little clicks. After I got the first one the 2nd was easier. Hope this works for you!

    Hi there,
    Do you know how to replace a couple of broken slats in the middle of the blinds that have looping lift strings?

    • @fixmyblinds
      @fixmyblinds  Před 3 lety

      Hi Sam, Yes, we know how to do that. It is a little more involved because you have to untie the string from inside the top rail and remove it from the slats you're replacing - and all of the ones below the broken ones. Then, you rethread the string by hand. This video will be helpful: czcams.com/video/xDNzTFX_f7g/video.html&lc=Ugw5Nvyw_K5ltzm2VXt4AaABAg. Is there a way to recover your lift string? I didn't see this video before I started and my entire lift cord is up in the top of my blind.

    • @fixmyblinds
      @fixmyblinds  Před 2 lety

      Hi Kelley, Are the blinds you're working on cordless operation? (Cordless operation means that when you lift them up, you push on the bottom rail and don't pull on any strings.) If they are cordless operation, then there's no way to recover the string once it gets retracted into the spring-loaded mechanism in the top rail. But, if they are not cordless operation and you pull on strings to raise and lower them, you will be able to find the string inside the top and restring them. If you have any additional questions, you can reach out to us at service@fixmyblinds.com.

    I have shortened many Wal-Mart blinds and always cut all the strings, no problem. I did that and my lifting string went inside the top of the blind! How do I repair, or get to that??

      Dianne, Are the blinds that you tried to shorten cordless operation? (Meaning that there aren't any external cords to pull on to raise the blinds up and down.)

    wouldn't it be best to save the slats just in case one breaks.

    • @fixmyblinds

      You can save a couple of slats in case one breaks. Most people just leave an extra slat or two at the bottom of the blind.

    Note to self - watch this video before you try to shorten your blinds.
