Bach - Cello Suite no. 2 in D minor BWV 1008 - Pincombe | Netherlands Bach Society

- The second Cello Suite in D minor, performed by Steuart Pincombe for All of Bach, has a dark and introspective tone. It is one of the favourite pieces of Pincombe. As such, he was delighted when we asked him to record this suite in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. The searching character of the piece suits Pincombe’s outlook. In his playing, he always tries to create something new, rather than recreating past experiences.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on February 12th 2018 at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

We can't love more music and Bach than played with so much passion...Beautiful interpretations...Great cellist
Bro I love you
You are the best human on this Word😘😘😘😘
@XDranzer000 As far as I know It's because of European music history! :-) The 'Suite' form developed in France in 17th century. Musicians and composers were very curious about what was new in music and they traveled and corresponded a lot more than you would think! The suite with the french names was very popular until mid -18th century. Sometimes called Suite de dances or Ouverture or Partita.
@XDranzer000 French was the 'lingua franca' of the European elite today.
Allemande
This guy is a magician. Almost made me cry with his interpretation. It's just a wow.
I can't believe this whole CZcams channel exists, for free. It's like all you needed to access to Heaven was a wifi connection. I can't believe the quality of every single interpretation/video. How is it even possible to listen to all of this for free? I just can't believe it. I found the channel only this morning and I spent the day listening to it feverishly. I worship every single member of the Netherlands Bach Society. Thank you so much. You don't know how much all these videos are a source of joy to a fan of Bach like me.
Oh yes ! I agree 😊

Many thanks for these kind words! It was our main goal from the start to keep All of Bach for free. It is indeed an expensive project, but all worth it! The last 4 years we received funds from Dutch subsidiaries, and since May it is possible for private donors to donate money. Check our page allofbach.com/en/support-us/ for more info!
leverkuhn67 I am in awe of this as well. The quality of the sound most of all.
I echo this. Remarkable.
This man doesn’t play the music, he becomes the music.
You’re absolutely right, his playing is perfection and his phrasing is beautiful and he knows how to make the baroque cello sing and let the bass notes have a chance to shine.
The best musicians do..🎻🎼
He actually used to be my teacher. Super high standards, difficult lessons, but an amazing teacher.
@@romanthechristian5237 holy shit, you actually were a student taught by him. I’m so jealous
I am playing this music every morning welcoming my kindergarten students to classroom. The music brings calmness as they enter and play quietly waiting for class to begin. Thank you.
Those kids are our best hope for the future!! You gave them a taste of perfection (speaking as a musician self). My grandmother was an elementary teacher for the better part of 40 years but also taught me to love baroque/classical/ romantic era music when she'd return from her trips to Europe. This music reminds me of her 😇
Thank you! You are giving a gift to your students! 🎉
Great teacher :)
I donated a bit!
You are brilliant!
“The final aim and reason of all music is nothing other than the glorification of God and the refreshment of the spirit.”
― J.S. Bach
I’ve played and listened to the suites for 26 years and this is by far one of the best version I’ve ever heard, absolute fan, thank you
Whats your favorite playing of this?
For me, it’s Enrico Dindo’s, then Rostropovich’s, but this is a fantastic interpretation. Really getting a lot of wild character from that baroque bow, fantastically different to conventional interps. Wow
Finally! - a cellist who fully understands the ornamental basis of Bach's musical notation. Sublime.
The sarabande of this suite is one of the most beautiful works of classical music, in my opinion.
I'm not in the best moment of my life but this, "put a smile on my face". Thank you.
I really really love this Performance!! I can't tell why but every other interpretation of this piece from other cellists sounded lifeless to me. Pincombe did a great job and I would love to hear his interpretation of the other suites with this kind of emotion.
Thank you Steuart!
I will never tire of this. This is almost unique in classical performances. You can tell it's him; who's playing it, based on his own interpretation.
Fantastic and irreplaceable.
I profoundly love this interpretation. It is unique and intense. I'd like to thank Mr Pincombe for his soul and passion as well as for his amazing talent.
If you are angry, listen to Bach music

If you want to listen to Bach music, listen to Bach music!
But I agree!
Dude... you can just listen to the cello suites alone and all of life is covered. Add a violin or flute partita and well.. we just have so much more than we deserve. J.j.
I loved your words !!💓❤
I agree
Best performance of this piece I've ever listened to, and I've listened to a lot!
Je trouve que c'est la plus belle interprétation que j'ai pu écouter à ce jour!!! Il sait parfaitement compris que les moments de silence SONT de la musique!
I was doing something else while this was playing. When it was over, I realized I had been unconsciously mesmerized. So I played the whole video again.
The depth of soulfulness in this interpretation of Bach just floors me. That's an amazing sounding instrument in the hands of a sound poet, too. Big thank you for playing with so much love and total emotional investment and technical finesse!
That "Minuet I" totally blew my mind. I've been hearing it wrong and playing it wrong for years! This recording is the first I've heard that makes the pulse feel correct; I just didn't realize it before. Awesome.
I feel the same way! New appreciation for this interpretation
This was the description of life itself. It starts calmly then gets to the excitement and joy of youth but then the joy is interrupted by great sadness and melancoly. The sarabande is the turning point, the crisis that tempers human life. The menuets are the coping with life's adversity, the acceptance and resignation to its imperfections but also humankind's resilience to withstand difficulties and at last the synthesis of life and death, good and evil.
I admired most the interpretation of the sarabande. Such outcry of pain, strife and misery, the cellist surpassed the possible! His instrument became the human voice of ignored supplications, fervent pleas, anxious plaidoyers, it was great and terrifying, violent and complaining at once, it was the catharsis of life and its sense. I salute this cellist with respect and admiration.
Astounding. Tears streamed down my cheeks. This man’s style, dynamic touch, and emotionality is beyond.
The best rendition of the second suite in CZcams for sure.
How. HOw. HOW! How can anyone remember every note and just play it off by heart? Magic! This guy is a freakin SUPERMAN. SUPER BRAIN. And yeah. One of the best musicians I've ever heard. My God! It is sooooo amazing!
I think Maestro Bach would have been proud of this performance. How admirable it is!
The cinematography on this one is incredible, especially the Courante part, wonderful!
Si beau, si grand, si profond. Interprétation majestueuse. J’adore sans réserve. Le tempo est lent à mon sens comme il se doit. Cela ajoute de la gravité et de la profondeur. Tout ici conduit l’homme à la méditation !
wonderful, each note has a reason, each silence too, wonderful!
A man with passion, a cello and a beautiful empty chamber to play music = success.
You said that right brother.no long lips and depressing people who dont get the music,or constantly coughing or distracting from the music.
My god, the two minuets... Especially the seond... Such a brilliant piece of music... Great performance. I love Bach.
Bach played by a monumental cello player!!!!!!! (with a first class cello). Thanks Netherlands Bach Society
Probably my favorite interpretation of suite 2! Love his musicality and introspective quality
Histrionics does not replace musicality.
@@josephcambron7060 Yet histrionics adds to musicality. Specially when it's a visual perform also, helps transmission of emotions and creates a feeling of confidence that's greatly appreciated.
Such beauty, one of the most magnificent recordings I've ever seen. A very rich interpretation of this 2nd Suite, loved it.
Most times when the camerawork is overdone it only serves as a distraction, but this was so tastefully done, even during the fast movements. CZcams recommend strikes again, I've discovered an amazing channel.
No matter how many times i come back to listen to this music, i will aways have a new experience. Awesome presentation, Steuart!
I've just started playing cello - 1 year in, and it is incredible artists like this that both inspire and intimidate, and make me renew my efforts to improve. I am very thankful for the wonderful gift of this music from this very talented cellist. Not sure if I'l ever get to this level, but at least I know what to aspire to.
Maybe the most mature and layered interpretation of the Sarabande I've ever heard. Wow.
I have been listening to this piece since the late 80s and am now learning it, slowly. I’ve never heard a performance that pleases me more. The sound is also ideally captured by AoB. This cellist has profoundly good taste and an excellent technique. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
Wow, immediately one of my favourite interpretations (especially the Gigue). Thank you for these wonderful videos! 🙏
Especially the Gigue
@@pattmahiney yes, his timing is beautiful.
Metal video, Clsssical skill
Me not. I think the rhythm must be more respected, in order to move forward and not getting stuck.
i dunno what a gigue is, but hear hear
Close your eyes and listen.
I'm not a connoisseur of classical music, but the suites I've heard from Bach, squeeze your heart to the limit, and from one moment to another you rejoice the soul.
Don't close your eyes. The video is made so well.
This is the sound of a one man renaissance. Thank you to the Netherlands Bach Society and to the fine people that made this happen. Wonderfully played and recorded. Very kindly appreciated. Thank you!

Bach's music is so beautiful that there are no words to describe it ... I love it!
Magnifique suspension du temps.
Invitation naturelle à la méditation.
Merci à la Netherland Bach Sociey !
I wonder if Bach realized that there was a thread of Heaven woven through his soul. Listening to his works is like my hand being gently clasped and being led through a continuum of joy.
I like his flow! He's so relaxed with his bow!
Man, to me you sound like the dark forest himself playing. Such a raw, yet awe inspiring sound. Usually when listening to classical music the awe feels like coming from above. But you somehow managed to let god drive into me from below, from the dark humus with its earth worms. Smell of pines, scent of heaven.
Period instruments with gut strings often has that effect on me :) Modern strings and vibrato sound more like light and air!
Each upload is a sea of gold, from this channel
Bravo!👏
Вдумчивое и филигранное прочтение Баха. Спасибо за полученное наслаждение!
Absolument, littéralement sublime.
I always love watching professional cellists play. They break every 'rule' your average teacher has about posture and bow holds, and literally each one has some different way of sitting/holding the cello/bowing/etc. Just goes to show you it doesn't matter how you do it. Just make it sound good. Also just realized this guy is playing old school style without an endpin. Sick.
It's because it is playing it in "old style", using a baroque bow, and the baroque posture, to be most historically accurate, I think they also tuned the cello with the baroque tuning, but I can't tell if it is a baroque cello or not
@@Zerge6095 That's why I said he's playing old school style ;P And yea, almost positive it's at 415.
@@jasonfrost5025 this is actually closer to 392--essentially a half step lower than 415!
He actually used to be my teacher. He definitely has very high standards for his students and lessons are not easy. Still teaches rules about bow holds and posture.
Some rules are more like guidelines, others are absolutes. Some apply only in certain situations. One of the worst errors with situational technique was when the French decided the legato technique developed by Lemmens should be applied to everything unless explicitly specified, including music written before the techniques were developed.
What a wonderful interpretation. I can't even stand it 😭❤
Captivating and breathtaking. I didn't really have the time to listen to the whole thing. But once I started I couldn't help but listen to it all out of respect for the artistry.
Tears don't come easily from a stoic like me. A few were shed listening to this beauty. Thank you Universe for putting everything in place to create JS Bach's music. Fortunate indeed are we.
This is an example of the CZcams algorithm actually working
I think is bc the name of this chanel
a creeper spittin' truth!
Some call it creep some call it investigation. Lets claim them as synonymous like pervert, and flirtatious
Why not lol
Absolutely beautifully done. Wonderful improvisation at the end of the prelude as well.
This cellist holds music in the depths of his soul. Thank you for this.
Bravo! Bravo! What a spiritually as well as musically satisfying experience! The tempos for the Prelude, Allemande and Sarabande are the first time that I’ve heard someone besides myself decide that they need to be slower in order to bring out the pathos and longing that is inherent in Bach’s sublime music. I will be sharing this performance with my students and fellow cellists. I can’t thank you enough for these 22 minutes of pure beauty.
My 'cello teacher agrees about the tempo. The beautiful chords in the Sarabande just need to be drawn out.
This guy is UNREAL...I don't want to swear...but I can't believe this. Been studying these suites for most of my life...I'm in awe.
Just gotta practice for 40 hours a day.
I'm impressed how this video can translate Bach to a visual narrative. Excelent performance. Congratulations to the Netherlands Bach Society! Greattings from Brazil.
I'm not sure exactly what is a visual narrative but I sure enjoyed watching the musician and it's a beautiful video, I agree.
@@theon9575 I assume he means how the movements inspire scenes in a film or suggest a story.
Could you tell us the narrative? I am interested to know what that story might be. Greetings from Chicago.
Even though I doubt, there is beauty down in this world.... Dear Steuart Pincombe, thank you and Bach for your art...
Steuart Pincombe,
You are truly a gift of music to the human soul. You are very talented, you are sincere & so humble. I listen to you in my office when I’m working and I’m so uplifted hearing you play.
Thank you very much!
Thank you for making feel like a human being I cried.
This is my favorite Bach cello suite, it's so rich and beautiful.
Thank you for sharing this.
Wonderful music and great playing.
I cried 5 or 6 times while listening to it.
On a high quality speaker set this sounds absolutely sublime. This channel does not spare expenses when recording their performances, and people who listen on shitty speakers or headphones are missing out, big time. You notice the lack of visible mics, yet theyre able to capture such richness of tone. I can even hear the imperfections in the shifts and string noise, and the breaths. Means theyre using some expensive equipment
This man is incredible... when he plays, it seems that all the depth of the world emerges and that creativity overflows, to get out of any other interpretation of this work. A true and rare artist, a light among the shadows. People like him are going to bring public back again to classical music.
The Allemande of this piece remains my favorite playing of a Bach piece, Wen Sinn Yang's performance of #1 comes in close as second. I enjoyed #1 in this series but felt that while it was more emotive, it was choppy. Bravo to the NBS but Wen Sinn Yang's #1 is worth searching for and listening to.
Love the quality and passion expressed!!! Thank you Netherland's Bach Society for such a gift!
The second Suite always brings to my mind images of an atypically introspective tired old sea pirate trying to put his finger on where it all went wrong. I really enjoy how heavily Pincombe's interpretation leans into the musical elements that bring those images to my mind.
I love your mental imagery of the tired old sea pirate.
@@suran396 It reminds me of a farting rabbit playing a game of tag with an old man with a monocle and bushy brows
that cello is beautiful.of course the performance was also splendid
What a stunning performance! Thank you for sharing your passion.
Incredible, so deep ! I have just discovered your channel and All of Bach is my christmas gift ! Thanks to NBS & to Steuart for this perfect suite.
Thank you for all you do.... I'm in tears listening to this as I realize it's the closest I will get to Bach.... Palms together, I bow to you, thank you.
Mon Dieu....
Wahrlich genialer Cellist!
Minimizing vibrato with such a beautiful sound of the cello is surprisingly amazing!
Outstading music, beautifully interpreted in an video that values both the interpreter and the setting.
The camera moving through the chairs and finally finding the performer beautifully resembles the "searching" idea of the piece.
As of April 20th, 2021, 41K people make me have hope for Humanity, 774 make me preoccupied... I mean, you may not appreciate Bach or Baroque Music, but why, oh why you have to leave a dislike? Just go and find whatever you love. I want to express my opinion that if I had to select a sample of 10 videos from CZcams to present the achievements of Humankind, this would be one of them. Thank you so much to the musician for cultivating such a talent, and thank you to all of those involved in the production of the video. As to the 774 dislikings of this video, that makes about 2%: on a typical day if 2 in 100 people dislike you, there are chances that you are really good: let's take what's positive in this. :)
This is, probably, one of the best videos on the Internet.
Beautiful! I have listened over and over today, puts me in a state of bliss. Many blessings too you! Thank you!🌻🎧🎵🎶🎻🌹
Amazing piece!. I am always in awe of musicians playing baroque instruments / gut strings and the tonal qualities produced. I keep coming back and listening again to this piece!
This performance is a really miracle! God bless you Mr. Pincombe! Greetings from Brazil!
This suite is even more introspective than the 5th one in C minor. It is a complete contrast when heard just after the previous one, the suite 1 in G major.
Ever since i discovered this piece, i listen to it almost once a day! wow! thank you so much for sharing!
The tone is beautiful, the reverberation of sound, even the small details like the fingerings of the strings come together so perfectly ❤️
the evolution of classical music performance over the years has been a pleasure to witness. it seems the bar is constantly being raised year by year.
My deepest gratitude for all the beautiful music that you have so generously posted. It sustains, uplifts and inspires a desire to be my best self.
Every performance a precocious gift. Such passionate performances that bring the master to life and resound around the globe and through the celestial heavens. Thank you, Netherlands, for this tremendous accomplishment.
This is how you record a rockstar. Sublime. Thanks.
This beautiful piece, reminds me of the french movie "all the mornings of the world"... nicely melencolly, music reflects our moods, I wonder why no one has made a good movie about Bachs life...
Thank you for introducing me to these incredible musicians. Without this channel, I might have never come across any of them. Thank you!!
Everything about this video is amazing! Great camera work, sound quality, and performance. Well done!!!
The best version of Bach I’ve ever heard, Bravo!

Hermoso simplemente es Bach, gracias, gracias, gracias.
This is absolutely excellent work by the Netherlands Bach Society. Imagine when the project is done? I thank God this ended up in my CZcams recommended videos.
Played by the book: no excessive thrillers, metrics preserved, harmony and melody also. Yet, output is pure jazz.
Contemplative. Single tones were haiku and each pause sounded like thunder.
Milestone performance. Bravo!
Not played by the book! Metrics Not preserved! Jazz? WTF Stupid comment to say the least.
It was a privilege and unforeseen blessing to meet Steuart in Oberlin in 2018. Thanks for bringing Oberlin kids to Divine Liturgy, and for this transportive recording! God bless.
