Hi, welcome to ShuoshuoChinese 说说中文; my name is Shuo, I’m a native Chinese teacher living in Bangkok, Thailand, I’ve been teaching Chinese as a foreign language for seven years and I’m also a language learner.
In this channel, I will upload a weekly video, in which I talk about Chinese vocabulary, Chinese grammar, Chinese culture, Chinese stories with pinyin and the English translation for listening practice.
With my channel, you can easily start to learn and understand complicated Chinese grammar, sentence structure, and differences/nuances between similar Chinese words.
If you are a Chinese beginner, I’m planning to upload videos about what Chinese language is, how it differs from English, Chinese pronunciations, Chinese characters and Chinese stroke sequences and a mini Chinese course, (10 minutes per day), which can help you learn quickly and easily. Don’t miss it!

Interesting way to find your level of understanding, the words and sentences are much more daily-life than the HSK tests/courses (which is a good thing I guess). I have taken some of the official tests. For people actually wanting to take the tests, there is one big difference that should be clear: Only in HSK 1 exams there could be questions supplemented with english. In HSK2 everything is in chinese with some parts supplemented with pinyin and some without pinyin, all the questions and answers are in chinese. From HSK3 onwards there is no more pinyin in almost all parts.

Thanks for your video. My level is about 4 - 6 but I've given up HSK because after years of learning it, I come to realise it doesn't help the Western student to achieve fluency that is speaking, reading & writing Chinese - I want that. I've relised HSK was designed to make it easier for the teacher to teach Mandarin. However, for the students, I'm afraid you'll still need tones of additional books & learning materials & years to get fluency. That's the time you realise HSK isn't everything. Fact, they've now come up with new additional HSK level 9 - 11 or so because they've realised Chinese is way more complicated & HSK 6 as the top level. In fact in reality, HSK level 6 is probably level 2 in mainland China average school :) That is why I've given up HSK to concentrate on Mandarin Reader by professor John De Francis. This book comes in three parts, beginner, advanced & intermediate. Just imagine 400 new characters than in the previous edtion, with Mandarin to English essays to test your reading & understanding containing over 3000 compound characters, over 200,000 in the running texts, altogether if you finish the three books, you'll have learnt 1200 characters & 7000 compounds characters. According to the author, this represents about one-fourth of characters & one-sixth to one-ninth of compounds known to Chinese college grads.
I'm working on the advanced mandarin reader now which is a long way to go but the good thing is, it's written in tradditional characters & even the beginner serie containst tons of additional words you wouldn't find in HSK 4. That's just to tell you HSK is a waste of time because it doesn't give a western student a broad picture of the true scope of Mandarin. Another problem with HSK is, the student will get confy with simplified characters but when it comes to reading a basic chinese newspaper, you're stuck because guess what? Say now hello to tradditional characters HSK didn't teach you :) I had to unlearn HSK to go back at the root, with a book that starts you off with traditional characters. I still think it's wirthwhle to learn HSK, but soon you'll find out it's not enough to achieve fluency. Thanks

You should learn from native speakers. I'm in Taiwan and have essentially NEVER seen a Taiwanese English teacher who spoke English at a very high level, even at "advanced" levels.
Some of them know a ton of vocab and even fancy grammar rules, but they can't hold a normal conversation.
Stick to the real thing. My Chinese is not good enough to judge that guy's level. He seems good to me, but it's a lot safer to stick to authentic native speakers. You don't want to learn weird foreign language from non-native speakers.
That's such a big problem in Taiwan... people will argue with me about many things because they heard Taiwanese teachers tell them what "Americans" say. Ha. Not even close.
      Very important as a beginner.

I know all vocab up through HSK 5 but I get so frustrated when I'm studying materials that are marked HSK 5 or lower that use frequent HSK 6 level words. I’ve done Duolingo about a year and a half and I did great on the HSK 1-2, the HSK 3 gave me whiplash because I could read the sentences and understand them fine, but I actually didn’t know the answers in mandarin lol.
Which is fine, I’m actually getting HSK 3 books soon and finishing up my HSK 2 books. I’m almost finished with the Duolingo courses (which only have vocab up to the old HSK3 iirc), so I need to find more comprehensive things that quiz and test me to replace it.
Edit: I can also understand and read most the sentences on the first part of the HSK 5 section! Definitely cannot answer them, though one of them threw me for a massive loop lol

Not bad. I guess knowing or not knowing some words at the HSK 3-4 stage is a bit random, just depending on which words you learned. From the HSK 5-6 stage I definitely could not do the last exercise and before that I was around 50 %. In the HSK 3-4 part I was above 50 %, so I guess with some preparation (I did not study since 1.5 years), my speaking/reading/listening would be starting at HSK 4.
Hand-writing is something I always forget after half a year or so though (I had 2 periods of Chinese classes with a longer breaks in between), as I only write Chinese on my phone.

Though, I know I have impossible chance to visit China but I am still learning Chinese language. It's my passion , my happiness. • @davidrichards1741

Why impossible to visit there? I visited hong kong and china a couple of times. It was easy, they gave me a ten-year re-entry visa 4 years ago, tho I've not been for more than 2 yrs obviously. I want to go to HK again as it's better now it was before the US color revolution attempt and NED organized riots.
BTW, my mom was a doctor and my dad was a surgeon, and their dream/counsel for me was to do anything else instead, as he liked the work but hated the job because of "the system and the patients" (so he retired at age 42 to become a general house repairman and home flipper instead, making WAY more money LOL). Dad said that you need a weak mind and a strong back to be a good surgeon. He also said the best surgeons are people who are also good at sewing, plumbing, and carpentry but instead they got too many doctors with poor manual dexterity and big brains that woulda been better suited to nuclear or bio-engineering or something. He wouldn't have wanted most surgeons he saw to ever operate on him as they were often too clunky with their hands.

...So my dad's dream was for me to become a tax accountant coz he hated taxes and usually had some tax problem(s). So I was pushed to become a CPA, worked 2-3 years at a Big 4 firm and hated it. Instead, I loved computers & software programming which I learned on the side way back in the day, which led to an entry-level job at the biggest tech firm for a big cut in compensation initially (tho not for long as the industry was fire). That was all a long time ago, dad has long since passed and I'm long retired, and I now live tax-free oceanfront on my breezy luxurious tropical island offshore Singapore with my Asian wife I met at work many decades ago, who my parents weren't fond of cuz she was asian, which almost messed up everything (my parents never once met her parents before or after our marriage, which my parents never even attended). But I luv her (still) and working with software, tho I gave that up years ago (I mean working, not my wife lol) as our occupation has become managing our family office wealth instead, as I've learned how nobody else cares about your money as you do. If I were to go back fifty years to my days as a young man, as I wish I could, I'd say follow your dreams right from the start, not the dreams or wishes of your parents, for both your career and your love. But at least I learned to let my own kids find & follow their own way.
Cheers from Singapore, which btw is overflowing with Asian doctors haha, who are all highly fluent in English as is everyone here, so my Chinese language is still very weak :( but our offspring is fully bilingual cuz mom made her so :)

I use "lao" to refer to myself with Chinese Friends. "Lao Fan" ,given my Chinese Name ( I am of European ancestry).
I have been learning Zhong Han for years...pinyin is not a problem, but remembering the vocabulary is a problem at my age.
The videos are very helpful; but I would only learn properly from a 6 month study visit to Qing Dao ( where my erzi went for a year at Qingdao Dazue. ).
Being in the country of the language one wishes to study is the best way to "immerse" oneself in the language.

    第一段 :今天是大年初一,是春季的第一天,中国人呢一般都会去庙岭拜一拜,然后大家。。。一起吃饭。- 真的吗?你在中国的时候去寺庙礼拜吗?
    第二段:(这段有些词我听不清楚,不太懂,只懂大意而已):他想买一双鞋给他的吗吗,他妈妈说坚决不要,她有超多鞋了。然后她买给了爸爸,爸爸说穿的舒服,说以后如果打折继续给他买

    This video was good practice!
Thanks a bunch for the awesome content. I didn’t always follow curriculums and stuff like that I’ve learned in a less conventional way so sometimes even words from HSK4 I’m not the most familiar with yet as I’m doing 标准教程5上 HSK 5 book so many of the lessons are filled with words that I’m super familiar with already yet still learning a ton of new stuff, so it’s complicated… and this video helped me figure out where I need a lot of polishing and I found a ton of value in it and I actually spent a good chunk of time on this video and wrote answers to your questions you had for my own writing practice and maybe just to pick your brain as well :)
(I skipped to 6:16.) Wrote some notes ⬇️⬇️
Partially for myself, maybe anybody can see this and benefit or check it out.
Also a couple questions for you or anybody that can answer….
(Either way it boosts your engagement rate 😛)
    -
    **3-4 Section
Got everything from 3-4 correct except for:
When you said 竞争 I said 商量 or 讨论 haha I think I misunderstood the direction you were going though 😛 i was thinking you meant more to collaborate with them so you can all be awesome 😂 thanks for teaching me 激烈 too I never heard that word but I know both characters from 强烈 etc and 刺激,激动,感激 so makes total sense
When you said 犹豫 I said 考虑 so I mean 考虑could also be correct but 犹豫 more specific with the slight negative connotation
For the 即使 example I thought:
    即使我有钱,我还是不会买车的
Would this 还是不会….的 also work instead of 也不想 from a natives perspective? I felt like it confirms the situation even firmer but maybe it’s not as fluent.
    -
**For the answer part in 3-4 I’ll answer Q #2
(forgive any mistakes lol)
it would take some serious weekly dedication from the developers. For example I think Pleco is the best Chinese dictionary app and I can count countless times where I ran across words not in Pleco or phrases that you can find the separate definitions on Pleco but you’d have to piece the meanings together yourself.
    -
5-6 got most right except for:
For the 内疚 / 惭愧 I didn’t fully understood where you were going with it but I did guess 内疚 and although I know the word 惭愧 it didn’t really occur to me, I even thought of the words 心痛 and 发愁 as I thought you were more emphasizing the worrying aspect 😋
Also for the 垄断 example can you say 包揽? these words are pretty high level and I feel like there’s a lot of words to say this kind of meaning of controlling something and I don’t always understand the difference. I understand 垄断 to be more specific as monopolize but can you also use other words here like 控制 control, 把持 dominate, or 包揽 for example 包揽 can also mean to take full control over something or sweep the competition or win by a landslide right?
绑架 I did not know this word at all
咬牙切齿 did not know at all
不屑一顾 also did not know… when you acted it out the only word that came into my head was 装逼 hahaha
不可思议 I actually knew this one I feel like this is maybe not like a profound 成语 tho and more of a vocab or something idk it’s more common though so I’m not super proud of knowing this one haha
    聚精会神 also didn’t know
For the videos with your friends
1.) She started talking about lunar new year spring festival and then said re record cuz she was overly bubbly I assume 😂 then said how you will go to the temple and worship, feast together. And then you called her out on her temple worship bluff hahaha.
I understood the first one at regular speed no problem but the 2nd video I literally had no clue what the heck your friend was talking about even on half speed but I know she’s talking about some article of clothing or something of that nature she gave to her sister who then gave it to her mom and the mom loved it and said next time there’s a discount to get her more ?
