"The Schmeisser Myth: German Submachine Guns Through Two World Wars" is a newly published history of SMG development from the Villar Perosa and MP18 through the MP38 and MP40, written by Martin Helebrant. Given that it is published by Collector Grade, it should be no surprise that it is an excellent volume, which includes both historical and developmental context as well as detailed collectors' information on markings, variations, and production numbers.

I'm glad Ian actually reads the books before doing the review, too many people just read a few reviews & then do 1 of their own. Ian's background in engineering always helps him break down the highly technical parts into laymans terms that all of us can easily understand & as always results in highly informative & interesting videos, so its no wonder why Forgotten Weapons is such a popular channel amongst collectors & enthusiasts. Consistently well done productions, coupled with excellent and enthusiastic presentations of technical and historical information. Well worth watching, particularly if the viewer is a military weapons collector.

There were a fair number of both '38's and 40's issued by the CIA to montenyard local forces in Vietnam. They escaped from there and were seen to pop up from time to time all over the place. Ammo was hard to get, regular 9mm ball was not hot enough and as you said the magazines were not only poor, but were old and worn out by the late 60's. A few of those actually came home with GIs as souvenirs.

This is always an excellent channel, but Ian's review of this book is outstanding. Tells me everything I wanted to know with wonderful informed enthusiasm. All I need now is enough money to get a copy...
Ian, just fan gushing here. This posting is such a good example of what makes Forgotten Weapons so unique. Was always mildly interested in the MP 40 and now I'll satisfy that itch with this book. Mercy beaucoup.

Funny, actually, when I grew up, I always thought "schmeißer" was a nickname for the gun as it -a submachine gun - sprays bullets -or "throws" bullets around, i.e. schmeißen.
I am german, from 1978-1980 i had an rather extaordinary history teacher. He told us pupils, that ,schießen' to shot, and ,scheißen' to shit, have the same roots, because something is flying away.

When i saw the title "Schmeisser Myth" I first thought of the myth that Schmeisser designed AK-47. Does the book mention this at all? I assume not.
Yes, it goes into substantial depth on the question of who designed the MP38/40, and why Schmeisser's name is associated with them.
You may have misread my comment, I'm talking about the conspiratorial myth that Schmeisser invented the AK rifle. The myth that Alex C. likes to spread

as you said the germans had problems with the double stack single feed magazines but i ask is it better to have a single feed mag or a gun with the capability to alternate? i can't remember what gun was talked about but i think it was said that it was an advantage to have the single feed for simplicity

I thought that the MP 40 was designed by Berthold Geipel & Heinrich Vollmer. I also thought that there were only 2 major variants, quite significant ones actually, the MP 40/I & the MP 41.

I think you may have missed your true vocation, I believe you would make an excellent teacher.
He is teaching to a class of very interested and receptive students. That trumps every other teacher's experience handily.

n0la lindy's argument on the spandu vs the bren gun was spot on. It was absolutely confirmed by a US military person who was tasked with examining the differences to help train American soldiers. You can look up this video. He isn't always right but he brings you into his mind and shows you his thought process which is beautiful and rare thing.
I'd trust soldier memoirs over youtube comments...
Jimmy De'Souza People don't shoot upside down. Anecdotally, it was reliable, if people didn't have problems why do you think it was a problem. The m16 only takes a bit of dust or dirt to stop working. Solution? Stop getting dust in it. Under a well trained troop, the bren doesn't cause problems but the mg 42 just causes problem anyways, training mitigates the effect when it happens but it's still unreliable.
It's not possible to fire an mg42 alone, the recoil is absolutely absurd whereas a bren is fireable and much lighter. A bren is a truly single man weapon whereas a mg 42 is a squad based weapon. Useable in close quarters, not really but i'd take it over an mg42 if I had to. American soldiers use the saw in close quarters if they have to and it does the job. I'd REALLY take a bren over a kar 98k in close quarters that's for sure. BANG "oh shit uh, hey man, can we just forget that I tried to shoot you."
A sergeant in the army confirms all of these points in a video of his own meant to train troops. The mg42 vs the bar. Same concept bar vs bren.
Jimmy De'Souza I understand the problem with rimlock however, if I were to go into combat, i'd double check and triple check that as did most soldiers. It is countered by paying attention when you're loading your mag when you're about to go into a life or death situation. Soldiers weren't always careful and you're right it would be wrong to blame the soldiers solely. However we would have to consider for one second if you had a perfectly reliable lmg other than rimlock. The number 1 malfunction would be rimlock because there wasn't anything else wrong with it. If you take an unreliable gun, rimlock would be way down there.
The number 1 malfunction of the lee enfield is rimlock but it's absolutely safe to say it is a very reliable gun. That's my point, the bren suffered from rimlock however it didn't suffer from much else. You can look up whether the bren gun is reliable and any source the mentions the bren gun calls it reliable, there isn't anyone saying it's not. The assault drum and all need two people.
One person to shoot and another person to use as a bipod. You would put the gun barrel on the person's shoulder and fire. This is the fire and move technique that was used, it was never meant to be fired from the shoulder or even from the hip drum or not. It really can't it's throwing full powered cartridges at twice the rate of the bren and is so much heavier and you don't have a good place to hold it, that the recoil and unwieldiness combined means you would be a lot better off using a bolt action 98k.
The bren's recoil isn't light but it can be fired from the hip and shoulder. What the person was referring to was a soldier's incompetence and his need to use controlled bursts when firing from the hip or shoulder as if firing from the hip or shoulder were commonly done. I'd challenge you to find a source that says the same thing about the mg 42. This was true, just look at the m14.
Lindy has his faults and he is wrong sometimes, he doesn't believe in global warming which is . . . Alarming. That doesn't mean all his opinions aren't valid though just maybe that one opinion.
Maybe the non stamped mp 41s went to the SS. Hence no waffenamph marks

Did he say the Villar Perosa came first? That's like one of the chicken or the egg debates of the historical firearms community. Some folks say Villa Persona, some folks make their guidelines more stringent and say MP18

Paula J. Bean A hundred years ago Savage made pistols also, including a competitor for the JMB and Colt for the the 1911 .45 contract that wasn't successful in .45acp, but was commercially successful in smaller calibers Luke .32acp.
Paula J. Bean I believe Ian did a video on the .45 that challenged the Colt for the 1911 contract. I think it was in one of the auction series a couple years ago. Good video if you find it.

interesting moment- on 2:51 the bottom photo depicts guys from Ukrainian insurgent's army. They were fighting against germans(till 1944) and soviets(till middle of 1950s). It's very uncommon to find any info about them in western literature.
So the 'Schmeisser' wasn't a Schmeisser at all... :-)

In the 1980's I became friends a gentleman who was in the WW2 SAS and he was in the last year of the war in Europe in a combined unit with the SBS raiding Nazi held Greek islands from unofficial bases in the Turkish Agean. Among the details he related was his weapon of choice " Schmeisser" (Mp40?) which he rated much superior to the Sten.
I wish they didn't cost $90 :(
