- As the end of semaphores in Cornwall gets ever closer, the last train passes through Lostwithiel Station under the control of the Signal Box at Lostwithiel. The signals will now be controlled from Exeter. The service was 2P33, from St Austell to Plymouth, made up of a Class 802. Shortly after the train left, the lights went out in the Signal Box. Fortunately, it is grade 2 listed, and won’t be going anywhere soon. I am putting together a film for later in the month about the semaphores, but for now, this is the end.
I hope you enjoy watching, if you did, please do like & subscribe, it really is rather flattering.

Not over yet! This weeks booked Cornwall possession was supposed to be the end however down to let’s put it nicely “contractor issues” it has been postponed as it’s running late. The Possession is still in place for other parts of the work including the use of a rail crane.
I wish I had known this information before I made this film, thank you. Guess I'll have to make this film again!
@steamtothewest-trecanrail still a great bit of footage- thank you
@@tardis9326agreed!
@@steamtothewest-trecanrail i would say it was worth it! A well put together video capturing a scene that will no longer be with us in the future!
Just as a follow-up, it appears the box at Lostwithiel is being switched-off, and this was the last train to go through.
Very atmospheric. I retired last year after 48 years on the foot plate. The last place I worked past with semaphores were Banbury north and south boxes.
I always felt a little bit of humanity went out of the job when a manual box closed, a bit like lighthouses...things work as well but remotely, at a distance. ☹
Something rather elegant about the old signals and boxes
What a sad little story. Beautifully filmed.
Thank you
Strangely poignant moment... nobody else on the platforms.... - thanks for sharing and looking forward to your expanded film soon.
I wasn't surprised to be the only person there. 11 o'clock on a Sunday night, after a heavy shower. More for me
The sectional appendix released states that Lostiwithiel is still active, and running.
Luckily there are still GWR semaphores at Droitwich and Worcester, but a pity they're going from Cornwall.
I don’t think it closes until well into next year……..
It’s operations are being transferred to Exeter.
Semaphores remain till June according to a signaller there.
Hope the signal box isn't left to rot like the one at St Austell Station, be nice to leave the levers in place as a reminder of how it used to be and have a cafe the same as Bodmin Parkway and Totnes, another skilled job gone 😢
It’s grade II listed
@@steamtothewest-trecanrailgrade two listed mean nothing Wolverton station was Grade two listed and that disappeared over night😊😊😊,
