    I can’t think of a thing I regret getting rid of, but there are so many things I regret having bought.

    • @ManageableLiving
      @ManageableLiving  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Oh, I have had FAR more regret purchases than regret declutters, so overall far ahead of things by decluttering. Just a few oopsies I noticed... I was just looking for the tan shirt and a specific headband recently and it gave me the idea for this video. I was kind of surprised I came up with 7 specific items.

    Thank you for confirming that I was right to keep the 1970s bathroom scale I took from my mother’s house after she died. A contractor redoing my bathroom made fun if it (or me?), but it always works, never needs batteries, and it fits perfectly under a little table. What more does one need in a scale?
    Too many times, what we are told will be an upgrade just isn’t better.

    • @ManageableLiving
      @ManageableLiving  Před 3 měsíci

      So true, it was only temporarily an upgrade. I looked at other digital scales and the reviews are very mixed, which means it's not worth getting another digital. I'll just use the doctor-style scale in the gym at work if the current digital scale totally bites the dust.

    That’s so awesome you still have your Nintendo. I grew up playing those games. I still have my game cube and my brother has the super Nintendo. I used to try doing the minimalist lifestyle but switched to just simplifying instead. I’ve regretted lots of things I tossed or donated. I used to tell myself while decluttering “ if I lost this in a fire, would I miss it?” But instead now I tell myself “ if I was moving, would I bring this item along?” We are a family of 5 so we each have our own bits and pieces we like to collect. I tell myself too not to declutter other peoples items. So it’s up to each family member whether or not they want to get rid of an item. We so far have managed to live in a house that’s under 1000 ft.² and do not use a storage unit or garage to house our items. But we do have a camper we keep at my in-laws acreage.

      I always wanted a Game Cube but it came out when I was in my early 20s and I was a broke 20-something. I have considered getting it as an adult but I do appreciate that minimalism has taught me how to better evaluate purchases. Like, I play my SNES, but not enough to justify purchasing an additional system just to make up for not getting one 20 years ago. We're all just trying to figure it out together! 💜 thank you for hanging out today :)
      We just had a total loss fire in our neighborhood last week and I get the mentality, but it doesn't mean we can't enjoy things. They are entitled to be sad to have lost what they've worked their whole lives for.

    I will soon be moving after 28 years in the same house, and need to do serious decluttering. I don't want my new house to be cluttered, so I went down the CZcams rabbit hole of minimalism.The conclusion I came to is that minimalism is not for me, and while I will be getting rid of obvious trash or items that no longer do their job properly, I won't get rid of things that are still useful or beautiful. I think my focus would be on not buying new things. I will have the luxury of storage space, so I will just make sure anything I won't need immediately is stored properly and marked clearly. Your video confirm what I was thinking.

    • @ManageableLiving
      @ManageableLiving  Před 3 měsíci +1

      💜Yes! I am not bashing minimalism, just recognizing it's not for everyone - certainly not for me. I feel like my house was almost too sterile and echo-y, not the comforting and homey feel I was going for at all! Then I WAY overcorrected by overbuying in my anxiety and depression and now I am trying to get somewhere in the middle. Minimalism certainly didn't make all my problems go away like it's sometimes presented as. Now I feel like as long as I am not drowning in "stuff" and I can keep up, I will be very content. Thanks so much for hanging out with me today! 💜

    My biggest regret in decluttering was my CD collection from when I was a teenager. Yes, I can stream them, but I realized that I don’t like streaming and that streaming services remove stuff all the time.

      I know it's part of how we learn, it's just frustrating in the moment. I really am becoming a huge fan of the small chunks of decluttering because it gives us that breathing time to think and make better evaluations than trying to declutter a ton all out of frustration.

    For sure people should analyze what they are going to get rid of. I've been so happy with everything I've decluttered. You do have to be careful with electronic cables. Over the years I had accumulated so many that it was ridiculous. For the unusual cable serial bus (USB types), I kept one of each. For the devices I still have, I keep extras. Those are USB-C, lightning, mini-USB. As far as your weight scale is concerned, that seems more of getting a new scale that wasn't needed. I think about the first DSLR camera I got almost 20 years ago. I took the best photographs with that camera. But when the newer versions came out, of course I had to get them, and sold the first one. Looking back, that was so silly because the fancier features weren't what I used anyway. There was nothing wrong with the first camera. I could have saved a lot of money by keeping it - even if it wore out eventually. So, I just advise to be careful, especially with electronic accessories, to not get rid of something that might be hard to find now even if you're willing to pay for it.

    • @ManageableLiving
      @ManageableLiving  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes, I didn't need the new scale so then I was bummed that a. I tossed the analog and b. That I even bought the stupid thing in the first place! I have stated keeping the odd USBs as well - I don't remember what the one before micro was called with that weird divot but it came in handy when my uncle wanted to charge his MP3 player. I know, were all so cool and with the times lol. I now examine them and make sure I truly have duplicates before paring down. Again just learning to think more carefully before buying.

    I regret selling 2 of my favorite legos when I was a teen. I bought one of them back on eBay a few years later.
    I regret getting rid of a dragon-shaped puzzle just because my daughter now likes dragons and puzzles. It still haunts me to this day "where did I put it?" I think we regret more missing something when we can't remember what we did with it.
    I regret getting rid of a bag of t-lights, which is silly because they are so inexpensive. We didn't use them, until we needed them for a special candle dinner we did for our kids and now our decoration is missing 2 tea-lights. And I keep forgetting to buy them because I don't need them right now.

    • @ManageableLiving
      @ManageableLiving  Před 3 měsíci

      I totally get it. I would not be surprised if my brother rebuys a Voltron and Transfomers set from the 90s. It's so hard because you can't predict what your kids will want so hopefully it doesn't bother you too much.
      Your tea lights is how I feel about headbands. Do I think to look for them in stores? Not usually so in the rare instance I do, I don't find what I want. Do I have enough headbands in relation to how often I wear them? Yes. So I recognize it's a bit silly but still...

    You are not going to believe this Holly but as soon as I saw your lace top that you're wearing in this video, it triggered my regret of getting rid of 2 of my exactly the same tops but in navy and black.At the time I was being ruthless and I've been kicking myself ever since.

    • @ManageableLiving
      @ManageableLiving  Před 3 měsíci +1

      💜Oh wow! That is crazy - I just picked this one up recently at Torrid and I think it still comes in black too. I have rebought (or tried to rebuy on Poshmark or Mercari) other things - like specific tops the last time I was overweight that I liked, but I got rid of when I lost weight and here we are again... Now I keep all my favorite pieces stored away by size in vacuum bags. It's EXPENSIVE to rebuy clothes especially since I am just under 6' (172cm) tall and it's both difficult and pricey to buy talls. Not doing that again!💜 Thanks for stopping by - even if it was triggered by regret. Hopefully you can find a replacement you love! :)

    I decided some time ago that I was not a minimalist, because I don't mind having some extra things in my life. If the cacophony of "extra" grows too loud or oppressive, I will declutter to the point of peace once more but I do not care to go below that - I think I like some things around me that others would consider clutter and according to Cas, I am a Butterfly. That said, there is one item that I still think of and even sort of look for yet today - and I think it went into a "wrong" box or bag when we moved 4 years ago, like the polka dot blanket did. It was a coat I had bought in the 1980s when I visited Paris. But here is the thing: 1) I now live in Tucson, AZ where such a coat is utterly unnecessary 2) I am 35 years older than that 3) I weigh more now but have trimmed down a bit (still...) 4) WTF. One thing I will say - I love bath products and have had some amazing luck finding what I have been looking for on eBay, maybe this would be true of vintage lipstick. My late mom of blessed memory, who never knew how to use the internet, was a CHAMPION of writing to companies to see if she could find out if they had old stock or where they sold it to, and she was a master at using the telephone. She too loved bath products and she got a company in England to send her a whole case of some bath oil we both fell in love with in 1991. I still have 3 small bottles left and I am not sure I will ever use them up completely.

      I have considered contacting Revlon. Especially since a hairdresser at my salon does extra trainings at Revlon and told them my favorite discontinued hair product from them resells upwards of $150-200 on resell apps. It was originally $22 for reference so they are considering bringing it back (I’m nursing my last bottle). I didn’t get footage because it might be a wild goose chase, but when I turned to leave Walgreens Revlon racks, a shade name caught my eye that sounded promising. Of course it was sold out, the swatch on the strip didn’t quite look familiar, but also wasn’t totally out of the question - we know how well paper colors match the actual makeup… That shade is in my Walmart cart right now so I’ll definitely update either way.
      Hopefully the coat turns up! And yes, I felt like my house was too sterile and echo-y, not exactly welcoming and homey. I can hear the echo-ness in minimalist videos even with their super expensive microphones and audio adjustments in editing. Even if I agree with some of their points it’s very off putting to me after I experienced it myself. Even that 4th bedroom was bugging me when it got echo-y even if it needed to be purged. Now I need to recover finances a bit after the vehicle repairs to be able to turn that room into what I’ve decided on. I can’t wait, even if will be months down the road!

    I was never someone who accumulated a lot of inventory. I have little emotional attachment to equipment in general, then I did a big decluttering recently, then I realize that even I who don't accumulate, it's crazy the amount of stock we have or what we keep 😅 Probably, because my parents accumulate so much that it always made me anxious and I like clean and zen spaces. I have always had tendencies towards minimalism without even knowing it, by reading and informing myself about it, I realized that I naturally followed a lot of advice and others that I applied without knowing that it was minimalist. . I don't like to fit into a box, or say that I'm a minimalist, because I'm not that much of a minimalist (in my opinion 😅), but I have a strong tendency. It helps so much on a daily basis with my mental load, my stress, my anxiety. I've never had any decluttering regrets, but a lot of purchasing regrets 😅

    • @ManageableLiving

      I wish I didn't have such an attachment to belongings. But yes, even stuff that doesn't really matter is easy to grab a few things while shopping here and there. But it adds up so much more quickly than I anticipate until it's SO much. I'm building the habits of reviewing more frequently.

      @@ManageableLiving I am happy to have not a lot of attachment to the stuff, but when I am attach to one thing Oh lord 😆😅 good look to declutter this! All people are different, I respect this a lot, I often help people to declutter, because this, but I never rush someone or juge what this people keep. Just keep in mind your value, stick to it, keep what you love (no like Marie Kondo) but your hobby, your passion, your significative things. If you respect yourself, your values, what you love, you can not go wong! 💛

    I regret getting rid of my black leather jacket from my late teens and twenties. I gave up on ever fitting into it again and thought getting rid of it would make me feel better but I regret it, I miss it! And as it turned out I could probably fit it again but now I'll never know for sure because she's gone...and I was just trying to spark joy! Books I had an easier time with since my favorites are generally easier to find at the library. I did purchase a few "bookcase display" books even after I read it from the library. You know, the books I really resonate with and look nice. A few traveled to my work bookshelf like Essentialism. I still will reread them though. Also not giving up my Calvin & Hobbes *unless* I decide to invest in the box set. My friends that collect books though really enjoy having them all and that's OK!
