There are many Hero's in the Imperium, but none come close to matching the obscene feats of Bravery, skill and intelligence as Commissar Ciaphas Cain.... so why does everything think he is a coward?

      CAIN FACTS:
Ciaphas Cain is probably a living saint now. Because not even old age and death could defeat Ciaphas Cain.
Ciaphas Cain called Marneus Calgar a piece of shit to his face. And Calgar agreed.
There is no Cainite school of thought in the Commissariat. There are those who listen to Ciaphas Cain's advice, and dead Commissars.
Where Ciaphas Cain fights, the Inquisition cleans up after him.
Saint Cain achieved something only the Dark Angels and Space Wolves have achieved - fuck with the Inquisition and live.
Amberley didn't recruit Jürgen for the Inquisition because she was afraid he would put the Ordos out of business.
When Tzeentch asked Kairos Fateweaver a question about Ciaphas Cain, the Oracle jumped back into the Well of Eternity.
There are five stages of grief. When Ciaphas Cain hits anger, Khorne starts bargaining.
Normal people fear Inquisitors. Ciaphas Cain either awes, sleeps with, or kills them.
Ciaphas Cain was once told the nearest pot of tanna was on the other side of an Ork army. I don't see any Ork armies around here, do you ?
Ciaphas Cain stared into the Eye of Terror. It blinked first.
Jürgen once went to secure a nice room for Ciaphas Cain on an Imperial World. He came back one hour later having exposed and taken down a Tzeentchian cult.
When heretics learn that Ciaphas Cain has arrived in the system, they surrender to the Inquisition. It's safer for them, and easier for everyone involved.
Major Ruput Broklaw once woke up Ciaphas Cain after the Commissar had given strict orders not to be disturbed. He received the Star of Terra for his bravery and dedication to his duty.
When the Thousand Sons tried to kill Ciaphas Cain, they saw Jürgen next to him, shrugged, and went home.
The reason Tyranids got nerfed is because a Genestealer Patriarch tried to kill Ciaphas Cain once, and now the Hive-Mind is scared.
There was a possibility Ciaphas Cain would have become a Chaos Champion. Tzeentch spent the entirety of M41 making damn sure it didn't happen, to avoid losing his job.
Khorne wants Ciaphas Cain's skull. Unfortunately for the Blood God, the skull comes with the rest of Ciaphas Cain attached to it.
The reason Guilliman didn't wake up until the Times of Ending was because he was waiting for Cain to die of old age so he could hog the glory. Unfortunately, reports of the Commissar's death were greatly exaggerated.
When the Grey Knights aren't enough, the Ordo Malleus does not send Ciaphas Cain and his aid : they politely ask for his assistance.
      Gods plan. Ciaphas Cain laughs.
A psyker once tried to get Ciaphas Cain to shoot himself. The Commissar dropped the laspistol and shot him instead.
Ciaphas Cain and Amberley Vail once attended an Imperial gala infiltrated by sixteen different Chaos cults, three xenoists conspiracies and half a dozen Inquisitors and their retinues. The Holy Ordos call what happened next the "Night of Revelations". Cain called it a good date.
Ciaphas Cain doesn't get lost in underground tunnels. Not because he has a good sense of orientation, but because the tunnels want him to get out as soon as possible.
Ciaphas Cain weeps for every soldier who dies under his command. His tears are rarer than the Emperor's.

      @N0TYALC Před rokem

@@voxpopuli7910It sounds like you have a poor grasp of 40k’s scale. The imperium has over one million planets. There are hundreds of thousands of earth-like planets in the imperium. When I say earth-like, I mean planets that have similar technology, population, and living standards as our modern day earth in real life. There are giant hive planets with trillions of people crammed into nightmarish sci-fi slums, there are feudal planets where they live life just like we did back in the 1200’s, there are forge worlds where the population consists solely of servitors (to work the factories) and tech priests (to oversee the servitors), and there is everything in between. Most Imperial citizens will never see an alien, demon, or space marine. Many imperial citizens don’t believe that aliens exist, because they’ve never met anyone who has met anyone who has seen an alien. So not only are there movies in 40k, but there are books, tv, video games, and a huge assortment of sci-fi hobbies that people enjoy. There are probably enough movies in the Galaxy of 40k for everyone on real-life earth to watch 500 of them without any movie being watched twice

Cain is the only one who seems to notice, which is either him having such willpower that he can actually bear to be in Jurgen's vicinity or it gives credence to the theory that Cain's a latent psyker. It doesn't help that Jurgen's bad hygiene is in part a result of people's refusal to deal with him, so he doesn't see the use of trying to be presentable, which is kinda sad, really. It is very obvious when he describes himself as a coward as an excuse for a smart and reasonable action in a given deadly situation.
As for his daemonic resistance, I think it is something more akin to will tempering. His own thoughts of Slaneeshi corruption is that yes he likes to gamble, drink and all other vice, but in moderation that does not interfere with his duty. He actively resists excess of vice, and we all know that chaos gods are all about extreme excess of certain emotions. He has done this many many times, and while he might come up with excuses, he keeps doing it. His luck though... almost seems to be BAD luck, as how he gets out of situations is by being smart and cool headed, NOT just because the guy trying to snipe him sneezes at the last moment.

I believe that Cain's success is a combination of three factors.
First is Cain's own skill amd courage (along with Jurgen's help).
Second is a little help of one or more shards of the emperor. The emperor has to cover the entire galaxy and before the fall of Cadia he likely tried his best to get some people in places where they can help.
As Cain survived and triunfed against the enemies of the Imperium the Big E gave more help but also put him in the way of increasing scary things.
The thirds is that more and more people started to admire and worship him. If the humans in the Tau Empire managed to manifest a new minor god in the Warp imagine how much power would Cain would gain from the faith of billions of humans.
I really hope he is still alive in the setting. Even if he isn't we could use a male living saint, imagine all his badassery but with wings and warp holy magic.

I think the coward reputation mainly comes from his own harshness toward what he sees as is own moral weakness.
Showing he sometimes sees himself as such as he realise he has fear and very human selfishness to overcome. He feels that fear very strongly as he confess, he sometimes try to avoid danger in very unheroic ways and he definitely has a shelfish part of him that shows up and he really gives to much credit to all of it in his own diary.
It also show that he indeed has quite high moral standards and judges his human weakness according to them.
Plus he's witty, funny with a cinycal hunour and has a low taste for idiots and that makes him very much likable. And that definitely part of the charm of the caracter for it makes the diary both funny and interesting.
Plus it goes with the idea that true heroism is overcoming your own shortcomings no matter how hard you can morally judge yourself, so making him a true hero after all.

  • @internetxxx_pl0r3r_xxx77

I think Cain embodies the idea that bravery isn't a lack of fear, but rather striving on in spite of it. He'd rather be anywhere else 99% of the time, but people depend on him and no one else is around to save the day so all he can do is gulp down his worries and power through. In a setting of stone-faced, unflinching warriors, it's nice seeing a guy that can hold his own but still understands, and even dreads, just how close he constantly is to dying.

If i recall, isn't the entire point of Cain's character that HE is the only who doesn't think himself as a hero? By all means, him acting in spite of fear shows genuine bravery and he cares for his troops (unlike every other commissar), so in every respect he is a hero through and through. However, he is also so ashamed of his own fear that he beats himself down over it needlessly and cruelly, scolding himself over his perceived shady morals when really those are just excuses me makes to explain away his own bravery.

It might also be nice to have videos about individual Inquisitors like Amberly who've had major impacts on the setting.
