Can the Western Cape become its own country?

  • The Western Cape is roughly the same size as England and has close to 7 million people residing in the province. In recent months, hundreds of thousands of people have been calling for it to split away from South Africa and become its own country. Speaking to those advocating for this split as well as legal experts, we take a look at what that process would look like and if it would legally be possible.

For what it's worth I think the issue here is a financial one, caused by poor governance, greed, and corruption. If it is true that the Western Cape contributes R 185 billion in taxes and is only allocated 25% of that back in order to run the province then we have really lost before we've even started. The problem is probably the same in the other provinces. Nothing will change until the politics change. As well as the DA has done in running the Western Cape they will always be hamstrung financially. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Have you, in your capacity, made an attempt to educate people on how taxes fund government programmes? The majority of ANC supporters, especially in the rural areas don't know. They think that the money comes from the pockets of the ANC.
Also, market the party you want to win come 2024. The EFF is gaining on the DA because it's visible on the ground. It goes to the small towns and villages that the DA and other non-white parties do/will not.
People are tired of the ANC and will take just about anything that will position itself as the opposition. Have the DA (the most palatable "non-black" party) make itself known in NC, EC, NW and FS

Cape Independence is a dream BUT it's an achievable one. I live in the Western Cape and I fully support Cape Independence. The ANC has destroyed South Africa with their corruption, racist policies dividing people and inability to govern. Their is NO political solution that is going to fix this issue because the people of the Cape reject ANC rule but those outside the Cape keep the ANC in power despite the trajectory the country is going. Why? It's really simple, they refuse to hold them to account and are actually okay with the current state of affairs so why cant the People of The Cape cut our ties, seek a better government which will give us 💯 control over our future? The Cape will secede and I prefer it's done peacefully but if the ANC and their supporters choose to prevent us, I'm prepared to defend our right to a free and Independent Cape

@@lehlohonolomapitsi8607 why is there always someone who tries to turn this into a race thing?
Number 1, there's nothing difficult to understand regarding people of all races, currently living in the Western Cape, wanting a better life for themselves.
Number 2, whites make up approx 17% of the population in the WC. If this truly was a race thing, or in your mind white people being unhappy, it would stand no chance. Why would "we" (white people), waste our time doing something that's futile?
If it was a white thing, then you're quite right, we'd just go back to Europe instead. It's obviously not.

It is clear that the Union of South Africa was forced upon the citizens of Southern Africa by a colonial power which invaded numerous independent states and Kingdoms. The legitimacy of this is questionable at best, and seriously needs to be looked at. Such an invasion as in the situation happening in Namibia where the German Nation is paying reparation could very well be a factor to which Briton should also be held to account.
The ANC and the continuation of divisive racial politics and ideology, supported by foreign governments and organization still does not make a Zulu, suddenly a Xhosa, or a Khoisan suddenly a Matabele etc...etc.....
The centralization of powers on racial structure does not serve any person in South Africa except the few while enslaving numerous Kingdoms, Tribes and Nations......in a "black versus white" narrative.
The succession debate and movement is clearly more than a departure from the Republic of South Africa and the 'Union" subscribed to it by a foreign invading power......
it is more about real freedom, and the unbinding of all the citizens of South Africa from a history of subjugation by one power over another.....decentralized government more in tune and in closer quarters to localized citizenry .......closer, smaller and more responsible government over smaller areas which are easier to control and answerable to its citizenry.
The Rep. of South Africa designed at CODESA in which the 'code for South Africa' was prescribed over millions of people who were themselves never invited to any form of discussion .......(more foreign entities decided the fate of Southern Africa's citizens that South Africans citizens themselves)
The experiment is tried and failed .... and South Africans are Trillions of Dollars poorer .....stolen by a parasitical government who for the most part seem to be servicing a string of international economic hitmen from various foreign organizations who are the major benefactors of South African resources both human and material.
It would be more apt to say that the succession is already happening ..............for the mental emancipation which has begun....it is growing ......
while some would argue or ask............is one willing to die for this?............(sorry, but the was a Mandela ....line.....and look and see where it got us all)
the question to be answered is ...........is one willing to live for this?....

So they have no clue how to go about governing. Besides, African people on the outside of South Africa do not share your beliefs of a United Africa and history also shows that African tribes all over fough against eachother for land and whatever els was considered valued. Try to self educate rather than listen to gossip or obvious propaganda from people like EFF. ANC included but more so EFF. I visited the Western Cape SA for the first time in 2020, got stuck under COVID lockdown - but I had a great time. Cape Town is amazing - the landscape, mountains and beaches the best I've ever seen in the world, I met so many nice people of all races, tribes. The Lyft drivers were mostly from Zimbabwe - very educated, hard working and just nice.
The British and Dutch SA are really cool people - the women are as good looking as Swedes but not stuck up - great food, beer and wine.

Alan (incorrectly) argues that if we allow the Western Cape to secede, there is nothing that will prevent a proliferation of breakaways ("what stops Hout Bay from seceding from the Western Cape"). That is exactly why Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States (1993) Article 1 states: ‘The state as a person of international law should possess the following qualities:
    1. A permanent population (one could argue that Hout Bay has this, although they do not have unique 'culture' and/or predominant language that is different from the rest of the Western Cape, nor under threat by the rest of the Western Cape)
    2. A defined territory (Hout Bay qualifies)
    3. A government (if they were part of the new sovereign state, they'd even qualify for this, since the proposed Canton system of governing effectively means that they could be governing themselves)
    4. Capacity to enter into relations with other states’ (this is where they'd have difficulty, since as a region, they'd have to prove that they could be economically viable).
I accept that this is a simplification, so I'm happy to have an open discussion about where I might be wrong?

The only way then would be for the ANC government to enforce their will through force, but the modern international community will not allow that. The ANC and the rest of 'South Africa' would have to be prepared for serious crippling sanctions and becoming an international pariah (not to mention that they might potentially be even military intervention). I doubt there will be the political will from the rest of South Africa when industry collapses, poverty skyrockets and the elite lose their ability to go to their villas in Dubai (and lose all of their stolen money they've so nicely stolen over the years).
