  • In this video we will discuss how tree wraps can be used to prevent sun scald in the winter. Wrapping your trunks in the fall with a with polyester fabric will help reflect the solar energy that is absorbed in the day during the winter and prevent the bark tissue from expanding and contracting, which causes cracks in the the bark that will cause permanent damage to your fruit trees. It is important to remember to remove the wrap in the spring so as to not harbor insect and fungi pests during the summer months.

Neat idea. I have used a variety of methods to protect my trees but I like your idea because it would be easier to accommodate variations in trunk sizes and shapes. I use the same trunk guards as well as other designs. One thing that I have found is that the trunk guards for rodents need to be as high up the tree trunk as the expected snow level.
I am in zone 2b and have lots of wildlife so I have to use all sorts of protection for my fruit trees and bushes.

Yeah, that is a good point that wasn't mentioned in the video. The tree wrap allows you to work around any trunk diameter or height. It can be customized for each individual tree. I know that rabbits and hares will feed on Bark tissue and they travel on top of the snow. We have voles that like to move through the grass under the snow and that's why I put the tree guard right at the soil level to prevent vole damage. Thanks for your comment!

Sometimes we hang old compact disks to scare away birds when the fruit is beginning to ripen.
