This was an album track from the American Life album. Her 9th studio album. It talks about her losing her mother at age 5 and her father not being opened emotionally. The family never discussed the loss. Madonna is her real name and she was the eldest daughter, she was named after her mother and raised in a strict Catholic upbringing. Hence all the references to Catholicism in the images on the screen and throughout her career she would reference the religion.

American Life is Madonna's folktronicalbum and one of my favorites. This is a heartbreaking song since she's still suffering from her mother's death (when Madonna was five yrs old).
Knowing the backstory about Madonna's mom makes this song hit you right in the feels. Music's like a time machine for emotions. Thanks for sharing your take - it's like having a chat with a friend about our favorite tunes. 🎵🤍
The album version always amazed me, it has such a catchy tune, it sounds quite happy with the most saddest lyrics. Witnessing this song live at her current tour was like a spiritual experience. The greatest performer. ❤

Madonnas politics and button pushing controversies overshadow her brilliance as an artist, a song writer, and her ability to create catchy melodies. She is one of a kind. Some of her most personal stuff are deep album tracks like this which are relatively unknown as they are not released as singles.
She was in Portugal! This version is very different than the album track but it truly shows off her vocals in this live setting
Love your "Never Enough Coffee" t-shirt! Ironically, one of Madonna's mantras is "Never Enough Love". Madonna's early career was pop/dance confections, but as she progressed her music became much deeper and more serious (although she was still a lot fun too). This performance was on September 14, 2004 in Lisbon, Portugal to close out her Re-Invention World tour. She spoke to the audience in Portuguese. The song was from her 2004 American Life album. You’re right, it’s another song that’s very personal to her that, I think, spoke of her alienation, falling out, troubled relationships with the “father” or male authority figures in her life like-God the Father, Christ, the Catholic priests or Reverend Father(s), the Pope or the Holy Father (il Papa in Italian), her biological father, and her past lovers like Sean Penn, Carlos Leon, others. She of course misses her beloved mother who prematurely died at age 30 when Madonna was age 5. I consider this song as a sequel to Oh Father from her 1989 Like A Prayer album-the music video in black and white was haunting and stunning in its emotional impact about the death of her mother and how it impacted her relationships with the men in her life. Appreciate you reacting to and covering the artistry of Madonna.

@@BruceandCarla -Yeah, as a Madonna fan of 35 yrs, I just found that particular song an odd choice, but she has a 40yr catalog to experience still. I usually suggest people start at the first album and go through the whole discography, here’s hoping you keep on the Madonna journey.
