  • Carlos Tabares is a legend, even though he never came to the US. Instead, he turned down multimillion dollar offers to stay with his family in Cuba. Now, at 42 years old, he's still starring for Cuba's flagship club Industriales. But many fans wonder what might have been if he had made the arduous journey to the States. In the shadow of thawing relations between Cuba and the US, we spent time with Carlos and his club as he reflected on his journey and the decisions he's made.

    Tabares is a legend for Cuban baseball. His plays and his aptitude made him earn the position he is at. Millions of times he made us drop our jaws with incredible plays only he can do. Unfortunately, Cuba is a dictatorship where everybody is the property of the government. He mentioned during the interview that MLB players are sort of a merchandise in the hands of team owners. I think that is a lack of knowledge from Tabares. When you become a member of the MLB you sign a contract for doing a job and you are expected to do that job. Ending that contract you are free to go and do wherever you want. Not the same in Cuba. You are part of a team as long as the government wants you to be, or as long as you agree with the government in terms of politics. Not even caring about your skills or aptitude. I'm not criticizing his position or his skills, there is no doubt he is a wonderful player and human been, I'm criticizing the way that government makes you think despite any logic behind the situation. There will be better baseball in Cuba the day Cubans are free.

    I’m cuban!! This guys is a political instrument of the Cuban government! They forgot to mention that if a Cuban player wants to play in the MLB has to flee from cuba because the Cuban government do not let them play outside the country. If any player flee they are not allowed by the Cuban government to go back to visit their family in cuba. The Cuban government hold their families in cuba as a way to punish them because they want to play at the MLB. Now the Cuban government is being more flexible with the baseball players by letting some of the them to play outside just if they agree to give the Cuban government most of the money they earn and if they like the revolutionary government. If you think different they do not let you play any where.....

    I think Tavares is making that up. He was ok but noting special. It would have been a long shot for him to be a starter in the majors , I really doubt they were offering him millions to sign

    This guy was good. But not really among the greatest. Never decided to leave the country for whatever reason (I do not buy the "I rather be loved by millions" line since this is no the first time I've heard it from cuban players that later regretted not having left the country to play for a better pay) and now he's just trying to stay afloat. I've seen this too many times.

    Carlos Tabares was a great player but honestly, he was not a major league material, probably Minor Lague. Almost every single one of the boxers and baseball players that decided to stay in Cuba have had regretted. There's nothing wrong on playing professional like many athletes in the world and come back to their country.. representing their Country at the Olympics etc, the Cuban dictatorship makes look like it's wrong and they are traitors but time have prove them wrong.

      Obvious case of someone who has no idea what they're talking about. There's simply nothing you can do to return to Cuba if you leave. The penalty is life imprisonment. He definitely was good enough for the majors if he received million dollar offers from clubs.

    • @coachv4712
      @coachv4712 Před 8 lety +1

      You obviously didn't get what i am saying. First i do know what i am talking about brother, i am from Cuba, played Baseball in Cuba, Coached in Cuba and defected when coaching in Mexico in 2005. Read again, that's right, you can't play for Cuba anymore if you leave, at the beginning the sanctions were stricter but never life imprisonment but basically the same because you couldn't play anymore, couldn't get another job, they were watching you so you couldn't leave the island and things like that, they did that to El Duque Hernandez, now is little bit more flexible caused everyone is leaving so they have no choice, defectors now can go back and visit Cuba, Yasiel Puig, Rey Ordonez, Jose Contreras and others have done it and they were allowed, not because they Dictators are changing but the are feeling the pressure of the Cuban people and the world. Athletes around the world play at professional leagues in other Countries and they return to play with their Nation in International Competition, not Cubans, thanks to the stupid Government. Tabares like many others had offers but one thing is getting the offer and another one is getting sign with a Major League team, even if he happened to be signed, he wouldn't get a great offer and i don't thing he would last too long in the Majors, like i said he was a good player but not a top class like Omar Linares, Victor Mesa, Antonio Pacheco, Jerman Mesa, Orestes Kindelan, Luis Ulacia..etc, any Cuban can tell you that, except for a hard core Industriales Team (Havana City Team) super fan, lol. Peace and Love my friend.

    Tabares es un Mentiroso, El no se fue porque quería un Millón de Amigos, El no se fue porque el esta de acuerdo con La Dictadura Cubana que en muchas ocasiones lo ha dicho públicamente que Apoya a Fidel Castro y esas palabras que dijo de que un jugador de baseball no puede decidir su destino porque te conviertes en mercancía, son las mismas palabras que Fidel Castro dijo cuando instauro su regimen y expropio todos los equipos de beisbol, ahora sin embargo Tabares vive en Miami y le gusta mucho el Capitalismo, El es un Hipócrita, era mi jugador Favorito desde niño siempre lo imitaba porque soy fanático de Industriales... Pero la verdad se tiene que decir ES UN HIPOCRITA

    He is definitely not the best Cuban player you´ve never heard of. He wasn´t even the best CF of his time. He was super dependable, aggressive, and too spectacular for his own good, who played for the only team who at the time got any regular TV coverage in Cuba, hence him becoming the favorite of the mainstream fan the the institutional machine.

    He was a good center fielder, but not the best. By far he is not the best. Have you heard about Martin Dihigo, Alexei Ramirez, and many others. Tavares is not the best player. He decided to stay ok, but it doesn’t make him the best. Ask him if he regrets that decision. Javier Méndez was a better center fielder than he will ever be.
