The GK-3 was a pain to fit back in the day and get tracking properly (it never really succeeded) but is the GK-5 a better unit that actually works?
So I show you about the GK-5, it's components and I take an Tokai Les Paul type guitar and fit the GK-5 to that guitar. While I do cover the fitting to an LP guitar, it's not a bad idea to watch this video even if you're fitting it to a Stratocaster or something similar, because the procedures are not that different really.
Now I did create the video and have never fitted a GK-5 Boss pickup to any guitar before, so if I can do it, you should be fine - just watch how I do it.
Part of this series includes a 1 1/2 hour video all about the SY-1000 and the GM-800 synths for guitar and that video covers loads of different things overall. You can find that here: • Roland Boss SY-1000 & ... as that is the main video in this series on guitar synths.
I have spent considerable time creating this video over ten days of work and two days editing entirely at my own expense:

Hi Tony. Thanks for the interesting video. I look forward to seeing how it goes. I've been building my latest pedal board and it's cooked my brains this time so I don't think I'll be trying this for a while. Happy new year to you and yours'.
The video of the two synths is online from the text below the video and that showed the GK-5 being used, albeit as simple stuff for tones. The synths are cooking my brains too :) There really is so much to pick up on and literally no spare time to do it. Yes have a great new year too and thanks for watching.
Cherry-o olde chap! How are you doing? Another GREAT video!!! 👏
Still alive :) Thanks for watching...
I think Roland has missed a trick here, this new pickup is sending out a digital signal to the twisted pair, so why not make it wireless like the Fishman?
Great point, and who knows - my guess is that the GM-800 is NOT the top of the line synth... thanks for watching.
I just decided to dust off the old Roland gr-55 guitar synthesizer pedal still using the gk3 interested to see what the gk5 can do in comparison.
You should :) They work as good as the day you bought them! I also have a number of synth devices sitting around - even a VG-99 :) and each unit I have has something that is generally great about it. The step to digital GK-5 pickup will move the stuff forward but it's almost like the GR-300 interface for guitar (there was no GK pickup needed). Having said that it's probably improved and seems like it is in the tracking department. In the text is the associated video of the SY-1000 and GM-800 using this pickup at the end for some of the tones. Thanks for watching.
Hello, quick question.
I'm lefthanded and was wondering how the gk5 would hook up to a lefthanded guitar.
The mounting clip would be upside down on a lefty I think, is there enough wire from the pickup for that?
Thank you!
That's a great question and not one I considered.... anyone out there have the answer? and thanks for watching.
Hi, I have a question to ask you that : What is the maximum of Height that Black Iron Holder able to stretch ? Just want to know that my 3 Inch Thickness guitar can fit this Holder Mounting Part or not.
So, after installing the pickup holder you can’t raise it to a the perfect height? I’m thinking about just using the mount and pickup holder with the spacers?
Are the spacers necessary or can you just raise the saddle to the perfect height? I can’t remember the last time I messed with my Les Paul….
I had issues so used the spacers... as shown. Without those it was not viable in my case... thanks for watching.
Dudes, did I miss the GK-4? I had a GK-2 and always thought the 3 was little to no improvement?...
The 3 I agree was not perfect. The GK-5 is of course digital and the GK-3 seemed to be analogue with the 13 wires... I noted in the synth reviews that Roland Boss (in their manuals) cite fret wear, neck warp, you can name whatever here... as reasons for bad tracking. Maybe that's the case or not. But interesting none the less... thanks for watching.
I wonder why won’t you do a quad cortex review? Surely it’s not about the money? Isn’t it?
Please wonder ;-) That unit compares these days to the Fender Tone Master and they dropped the price so they sort of 'match that unit' IMO. My channel has never had issues with money, but I doubt that the unit you mention has particularly improved since its launch in January 2020. In effect its old technology - as Fender might report. Fender claim 'the most powerful processor' ( Ha don't they all) putting the Quad Cortex down the slide a little. It's just a view of course, and after seeing the Fender Tone Master costing me about £1600 I really won't spend that sort of money on a 4 year old device unless it has tubes in there for their price. Thanks.
