    I prefer long unedited videos like this one. I think this is better especially if you want to learn! Keep up the good work!

    I like that longer unedited format better than the usual. Mistakes are educational and fun at the same time and make your videos more fun to watch. And you have less work in post production after all. All best wishes for the recovery of your family.

    Love this real life, warts and all, style. Hopefully this minimizes the editing time, freeing you up for more material.
    The reasons I prefer this style is first, the thought process is valuable for trouble shooting, in general, and since there is knowledge not just in what 'is', but in what 'isn't', there is continuous value in this method. Thanks!

    Superb work, the motor service is one of the best ways to make sure these decks run perfectly without problems .

    Most fans would recommend re-capping it anyway.
    Those things were cheap to begin with and now they're 40 years old.

    The unedited version of events presents a more realistic perspective for troubleshooting and repairing consumer electronics. It's how my endeavors typically go anyway. The polished version makes your efforts seem like they come off without any problems at all. Both formats are educational, but the raw version must be easier to produce. Great detail camera work by the way. Good to see that someone other than me is willing to do this sort of maintenance.

    There is another issue with this motor. I have tried cleaning it several times only for the problem to reoccur a few weeks/months later. If you look up the "solder fix" on tapeheads, this is the definitive fix for this issue. The terminals on the back of the motor and the copper tabs holding the brushes are held together by screws inside the end cap. The connection between these two pieces is not good even if the screws appear tight. Adding a bit of solder to connect these two pieces together is the definitive fix. After doing this on my unit it seems to have finally resolved the issue once and for all. Something to consider for the next time you take apart a motor like this.

    Thanks for the nice video - helps me much! But I did the same without removing the complete drive mechanism. I removed the alu-plate, the front screw and the back holder screw through a hole in the back PCB. I also didnt desoldered the switches. So the repair is much easier and faster ;)

    This worked! My BX-300 stopped playing tapes, its the geared version so all the "just replace the tire" posts weren't getting me anywhere. It seemed like the loading motor was where it was stalling out, so I did what you did, viola! Back in business :)

  • @Hugo_Overthere
    @Hugo_Overthere Před rokem +1

    I don't think that the armature crud buildup was the problem. The problem was that the armature had worn such large concaves into the brushes that they were spanning the contact gap for such a large angle that it was robbing too much power during phase transition. You cured that.

    Awesome video of an awesome repair. Thanks so much for doing this work and for sharing it with us. Can you guess as to why audio repair business won't tear down these cassette motors to do the repair? I know of TWO businesses that say if they can't buy a new motor, they can't repair the deck.

    Do you have a repair shop?
    Where?
    Since you have so much experience with BX-300's...I was thinking I'd send you mine.
    Interesting resurfacing of the commutator...Wouldn't some sandpaper accomplish the same thing?

    Well done on that motor repair. It might have been educational to show the voltage and current minmax's after you fixed it, to compare with the original measurements.. Hope your family is progressing steadily!

    • @325iaddict
      @325iaddict Před 6 měsíci

      there will be not many differences. The motor sometimes just stops without a reason prior to the repair. Current consumption falls down to zero in that case.

    23:28 one arm looks more angled at its attachment screw than the other. Also, I stopped the video here because it is one of the few positions that have the brush ends equally distant from the center. But in most other shots it seems one is crossing into the center more. May need to double check that each brush is making contact with equal force?

  • @davidbutler8096
    @davidbutler8096 Před 11 měsíci +1

    Generally...I'd wager on the take-up or the loading motor.
    Or...bad interface between the take-up wheel and the terrible design of the rubber wheel.
    A lot of people put the gear drive in there, but it's quite a bit more noisy.
    Plus...the little motors develop drop outs and lose their way.
    Easily remedied by cleaning and re-lubing them.

    EXACTLY this is what I'm doing right now, with an Onkyo Integra deck, with more or less the same transport and at least: the same motor. It indeed ate tapes, it got stuck in a position where the pressure roller was in contact with the capstan, and as soon as you power it up, you see the LEFT (supply)-reel running.... while the take-up reel did not run. After a few seconds, the auto-stop system angages and a rapid blinking of the green LED in the PLAY-button starts. Upon cycling the power, this proces repeats. While in this condition, the cassette door is stuck (of course, as the heads and roller are up). After some banging on the deck, it comes to a reset. Then, everything works... for a few times, then some other fault may be present (like no reaction at ALL when pressing a button... after a few seconds, that rapid blinking behind the PLAY button starts again). I for SURE noticed a dead spot in the servo motor: just apply 2 Volts, and brake it with your fingers until 1 rev/sec. Then, suddenly it stopped, current consumption: ZERO. Now, I dismantled it fully....

      Curious to know if you get it resolved.

    • @325iaddict
      @325iaddict Před 6 měsíci

      @@norcal715 Yes, it now works flawlessly. Tried innumerable times play - ff - stop - play - rew - stop -play - stop - play - stop etc. and it never missed a command. I repaired the reelmotor of my Kenwood KX-9010 before successfully, years ago now, tested yesterday and it played a C-60 cassette fully, without stopping somewhere in the middle, so the motor still works well. However, this may be beginners' luck! Tom van der Hoff, who's spent his life repairing and engineering cassette decks, says: "this is just a temporary fix. The fault WILL come back! The only cure that works longer is to replace the motor!" Well... he still has a bunch of these motors around in his stock, which he guards with his life, but to us normal guys, such a motor is no longer available, so we have to do it this way...

    My BX-300 = loved throwing it into a dumpster, over engineered garbage. Thousands of dollars spent on old tired technology from Nak. Any two head deck can sound better than any Nak if it is properly set up for bias and Dolby level !
