It is the American government that does not care about life. Civilized countries do not have mass shootings like we do in the United States. If Americans did not want shootings to continue it would not be technically difficult to devise a policy solution that would achieve that outcome. Unfortunately, Americans simply don’t think shootings are a bad thing. The media simply holds up a mirror.

I never missed a single day of school for the sniper, and the impact this event had on fall sports was exaggerated. We had to run laps around the school hallways for cross-country practice, and in marching band they made going to away games optional.

The 350k went to the guy who first identified the actual killers, whom he was friends with.
The truckers could have actually caused more chaos, blocking the exit, waking the guys up, which could have lead to a hostage situation. Generally what they did was good, but it may have been smarter to have one trucker watch the car, and the other trucker be on the ready to block the exit if the car started to leave.
      Fortunately things worked out.
Also, most of the 1/2 million that was awarded, ended up being given by the two to the families of the victims, so in the end, the victims families got most of the money. So its all good.

I remember going to the gas station and standing so my car door and the gas pumps blocked the view of a potential sniper - pretty useless but I had to do something. The "white van" lead was ridiculous considering the hundreds, or even thousands, of white vans used by tradespeople in the DC area. We have often stopped in the rest area where the snipers were apprehended on WB I-70 between Frederick and Hagerstown, MD. As it turns out, the snipers used a Chevy car with a hole dilled in the trunk. It is on display at the Newseum in DC.

22:13, the lead on the white van - I was in the area at the time and the thing about the white van was very true and this documentary understates how terrified people were - when the lead on the white van came out, people were remarking how white vans were EVERYWHERE and how common they were and white vans were being pulled over all the time for inspection
they also don't talk about the roadside inspections where they were checking EVERY vehicle coming in the Beltway and that made a 20 minute commute a 3+hour trip so everyone was exhausted and many people were driving in the side lanes- the traffic congestion was horrible and since people were in the side emergency lane, it was blocking ambulences and all kinds of secondary medical problems were happening as people were unable to get to medicine like insulin they had at home or to doctors or hospitals- since even the emergency the lanes were blocked by jerks trying to get around the checkstops, it blocked access for emergency vehicles so fires were worse and many people died who wouldn't have otherwise and weren't direct shooting victims of the Beltway Snipers because of lack of ambulance access
also they blame the media for misleading the public about the white van but the police don't mention that they had pegged the sniper as a typical white lone wolf type guy, and they were way off on that one
the fear was thick in the air, palatable and everyones eyes were darting around in terror it was almost surreal

I recently listened to a great audiobook on the DC sniper case: "Call me god". Even though it was written by former FBI agent, it really highlights the ineptitude of US law enforcement. One unbelievable scene was when they found a letter, suspected to be from the killer, near one of the crime scenes. In the middle of one of the biggest investigations in US history, there was no proper organization. The local town sheriff, stood in a car park, surrounded by a random collection of representatives from the myriad of redundant law enforcement agencies and called for a show of hands to decide what they should do with the evidence just discovered. The only reason the killers were found was that someone who knew them called the FBI and told them who their identities and the car they were driving.

The media? A very different beast. Truth in reporting is not its priority. Profit is at the top of the list, which makes them far more mercenary in the way they conduct themselves. They have agendas, they have biases. Not only does the truth not matter anymore, facts don't matter anymore.

Somehow I missed the shooting by five minutes. A few days later I was at work in an office building in Bowie when a white box truck was pulled over, surrounded by six county/unmarked police cars, the driver was face down on the pavement, handcuffed, with at least three guns pointed at his head. After a very tense 90-100 minutes, the driver was let go, probably scared out of his mind. The whole time period was tense and unlike anything I had ever seen before. The memories are still so vivid, almost 20 years later.

Look up the annual FBI "Operation Cross Country", which arrests people who are prostituting children, and ask yourself why the perpetrators are never listed by name or have their photos shown by national media. Some local news organizations will publish the names and photos and the perpetrators are overwhelmingly Black. The MSM lies by omission when they decide not to cover it.

HOWEVER. There's a big difference between warning the innocent and telling the perp what the police know, or worse, releasing information BEFORE the police have a chance to act on it. Lives were at stake. How many people died because the shooters were forewarned by the press? In my opinion. That kind of reporting should leave you open to prosecution as an accessory. Now, before all you Americans start screaming about the first amendment, let me say this. It's interesting that the FBI formulated a profile of the killer, yet they didn't relate the specifics in the documentary when given the opportunity. I'm sure that the profile was exact, because they're expert FBI profilers, yet surely they could have lauded the work done by themselves to augment the public's belief that they are good at catching killers

I live 15 mins. away from the Fredericksburg Gas Station death..... Everyone was terrified around here and when they say they closed 95, they closed it...!!!! No traffic moved anywhere for hours and hours..... People really were ducking down and weaving back and forth, as they pumped gas! Every death was horrible and so very sad..... But one stands out so much more to me, than the others. I try to think about, how I would have dealt with the same thing happening to me..... It was the Home Depot shooting 40 mins. north of me. A husband and wife were loading their vehicle, and for whatever reason they switched spots. The wife was killed, standing where her husband stood, just seconds before.....

I remember watching the news for a month straight following this story. It was pretty insane and people thought it was more attacks because 9/11 was still fresh in everyone's mind.

I remember when they sent an army of agents into the North Carolina woods after Eric Robert Rudolph and couldn't find him! Years later a dirt road deputy on his first day out of orientation caught him dumpster diving!

This is why we appreciate all cops. Local, County, State & Federal. They protect us from these lunatics & crazies and bring those responsible to justice. Not an easy nor lucrative job. Like our brave men & women serving in America’s armed forces, never forget. Their human, capable of making mistakes. While you run from harm, they ran at it.
