I have done this before the end of the season and I saw results instantly. I could instantly identify mistakes and I had way more awareness of how the game unfolded. The "problem" of it was that I couldn't play more than 2-3 games a day. It was extremely mentally draining. Btw, by results I am not talking about wins and losses. I'm talking about playing better. When I relaxed the mindset a bit and started grinding more games, I had a much better average performance which lead to me carrying almost every game. The hyper focused mentality is a wonderful way of improving. It's like entering a training arc with full focus, making the most of your training and later when you go for the wins (the "real" games) that training paid off immensely. I didn't duo with anyone, I avoided being in a call with friends. I didn't listen to a podcast. It was just me and the game.
Extremely helpful mindset but also extremely mentally draining. I personally loved that experience and trying to apply it to everything else I do, be it work, my relationship or learning other skills :]
EDIT: I'm 25 btw
i donr know how but every time I feel sick from League he brings out really motivating videos like this and I am really pumped to play league again. Thanks man for the great content I have learned a lot and am looking forward to learning a lot more.
When he mentioned “The ability to have fun while playing at a high level.” I think about thebausffs. We shilling for sure.
Nothing more cringe than streamer fanboys who repeat their catchphrase everywhere, get a personality
As a 17 year old trying to aim for plat next season, this helps my mentality. Thanks coach!
@Coach Curtis one thing to also note about having a "gladiator mentality" is that it is the most truly _exhausting_ way of playing the game. I do not mean that allegorically either-this type of mentality is the "leave it all on the Fields of Justice" mentality and it is draining. It makes defeats feel deprecatingly crushing and victories will provide you with the most ecstatic of feelings. However, when you lose, you won't be sitting there pondering about your team's horrible plays-you'll be mentally reflecting over your own tiny mistakes that you know _could_ have changed the outcome of the game. I guarantee that after the VOD review in question, Dopa was probably internally thinking about the Cassio-stun play for a few minutes and how he could have done better. Great content!!
Thanks for the video Curtis! It's been a tough year and my mentality in game just went from good to tilting every game, but after watching this video I know that I'm not the only one who goes through this hard times in league, and thanks to you now I know what I have to do to keep going on my league journey and chasing my dreams. Thank you!
The gladiator comparison was amazing. Thank you for this video
It seems like your videos have helped many young players understand the game on a deeper level (myself included). Thanks for giving us such good guidance for free, you're a great coach!
While I no longer play solo q due to the environment my dreams of being a competitive fighting game player are still very much alive. Even so I still watched this video, specifically the gladiator mindset portion. I feel that a lot of what you said could easily be applied to fighting games let alone any esport so I have to thank you Curtis. You helped me get to gold and prove to myself that it is indeed possible to improve at this game, it just takes time to improve at it like anything in life. I wish you the best with all of your further endeavors in life, your content is too great for this community and platform
Thanks Curtis! Wonderful video like always. Keep up the great, meaningful, and well-thought out videos!
Really appreciate this channel, Curtis! I feel like most of the things you are teachings us can be implemented into the real life aswell, like pursuing becoming a better version of yourself etc. I've actually learnt a thing or too about the psychology of mindset, and I've improved tremendously at different areas in real life. It is also good to watch some good ol' league content :D Keep it up!
I love so much these videos, and this channel, there is a lot of information that can help us if we strive on it.
Thanks, Coach Curtis.
Comment for the algorithm! Thanks for the great vids Coach!
my lad curtis, really nice vid. appriciate ur hard work bud, keep it up!
youre insane curtis, ty for the content
Interesting and motivating, like the video Curtis!
the amount of knowledge and understanding Curtis has of macro in League is incredible to listen to. Love your channel and you have helped me to greatly improve my mental and mindset when playing
after all the videos i watcher from you this one was the key to make my games more consistent, i'm actually on plat 3 and i just got to gold 2months ago thank you for all the tips
Excelent Video! Every player in Brazil MUST watch this!!!! 🇧🇷
yet another amazing vid!
proud to say this has always been my mindset playing league. occasionally I will slip. but my mindset has always carried me to gold, because I suck mechanically and not quite enough game knowledge either. :( love your videos Coach Curtis
I like your podcast very much! Ty for the content!
Thanks Curtis, think this video came at the perfect time as its preseason and a lot of us, me especially, are wondering if it's still possible
This has given me lots of hope
You are still young and very accomplished coach. I'm really trying to hone this mentality but its so easy to slip back into old habits especially on loss streaks.
This was good for my mental. Thanks coach😁
Love the mindset and philosophy videos
19 here, just picked up League a month or two ago. Thank you for the information. This will help me for sure.
Another great video from the godly legend coah curys
i think that a lot of the soloq players are soft and weak minded, like they instantly give up and stop caring
its just a game but the same mentality wont get u anywhere in life
nice video curtis, respect and appreciate your videos
I do get worried that this mentality will spread to other areas of life, spot on. Appreciate you tuning in mate
I don't even play mid lane, but I find your content the most helpful. Keep it up mate!
im a jungler and i still like to watch u because u talk about knowledge not just a lane keep going
Really helpful vid. I think I use this mentality with my main, Orianna, because I'm so comfortable with her kits. I'm trying to diversify my champs though and get tilted easy on my newer champs. I'll have to try keeping this mindset even on champs I don't know as well
You are the second most popular Australian to review dopas gameplay! Congrats!
"What happens, happens" Well said, even in real life it is just like that! Thanks Coach for not only teaching us how macro/micro works, but how we can also carry games by staying positive
Hey Curtis,
Would love to see some Lissandra content! (whether that just be a guide or just a lane review).
I love your videos btw, they're helped me immensely and I feel blessed to have stumbled upon them
Turned 17 like 2 days ago and I find this video.
It is gold, thanks for this content
Oh, wow. I'm seventeen and want to get fast results so I can hopefully become a pro player in some years.
Thank you so much coach-senpai
@arthur jennat G2 Xerath Main, I also play Galio and Ekko a lot
Why do you play Aatrox mid and not top?
@arthur jennat Gold2 Leona and pantheon support main here, I'm still grinding to get to your level haha
@arthur jennat thank you! Yea unfortunately my dear pantheon support got nerfed haha. Are you grinding the pre season?
high quality as always! cheers from brazil, and i really would like to see a video about ekko with the new itens and the changing on dark seal!
The Gladiator mindset theory hypothesis dissertation of league of legends psychology explains Dopas extraordinary performance.
hi Curtis i am 17 now and this video rly makes sense rn im hardstuck d3 and my mindset is just 0/2 ff and i dont like it i think i need to adapt this mindset u talked about i was gm a few moths ago and my mindset was WAY better so ty for making this video i will try this midset
I'm 17 rn and it's like you were sitting next to me while i was playing league. I always say things like "my team didn't deserve to win" etc., so im gonna try this and hope i see some improvement in my own gameplay just from changing my mentallity. Also i love your videos, i already improved so much through your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Coach
Thanks for the video :>
Every Time I have a question, you always post a video with the answers that I need to evolve as a player. Thank you Coach.
Curtis, you opnened my mind, im 16 reached master tier in s10 around April, and im currently pretty stuck in dia1 dia2 cause of my really bad mentality, and probably of my bad understanding of tempo, maybe even my whole understanding of the game. I really want to improve and maybe even get to a professional level one day. Thank you for making these Videos, I appreciate your work, time and effort you put in these videos, bless you.
that's the best cass :)
holy shit bro i love you
Hey coach, such a positive video. Especially when so many players would just throw out and be toxic to their teammates. I guess what is essentially different is that you said " How weak my mental used to be". I think this question is helpful not just in league but also in life. Instead of doubting yourself "Why do I have to make extra work or be a better person", you should just do better things. Love your video man haha. Feel like we could be friends.
20:00 I completely agree, I disabled in-game chat and climbed from bronze to silver just cuz I was concentrated on the game more
Yeah, I feel like mastering this mentality can actually boost you up a whole League. The impact it can have is pretty crazy, cus you're going to be both less distracted AND less tilted, allowing you to make better choices overall (and when you play League you gotta make a boatload of choices, practically one every 5-10 seconds).
I'm someone who managed to half of this whole mentality pretty well. That half is the one that's about not getting distracted or tilted by the way my teammates play. Sometimes they loose lane and feed the enemy. It's fine. It happens to literally every single one of us.
The thing that I usually struggle with is taking responsibility for my losses. I always say things like, "Oh, they picked some OP meta shit while I'm just here sticking with Aurelion Sol, so that's why I lost" or "I was tired" or "I was tilted" or "We just had a bad team comp" and the list just goes on and on and on. Protecting our ego is something that we all automatically do, and it's really hard to stop. But I always try to take at least something good out of my losses, since chances are, I probably made some big mistakes (being only low Diamond) and as long as I remember not to do those fatal mistakes anymore, I should have improved as a player overall.
Wins are there to show you what you can do (and therefore to boost your ego), losses are there to show you your weakness and what you shouldn't do. And if you really don't think you could have done anything differently on your lost game, then review it, or ask a friend, or just say "Welp, shit happens. Let's move on!" (unless if you're hardstuck, then it's more than just bad luck).
The most impressive thing about this video for me is Dopa's posture and arrangement:
* he just sits there in the chair, leaning back
* he barely moves his mouse (very high sensitivity/dpi apparently)
* having the mouse so close to the edge of the desk would make me crazy :D
* his elbow is not on the desk but way below it (in shooters, this is the exact opposite: the elbow should usually be on the desk so that you move your lower arm and not only your hand)
Also, he uses range indicators...wow. Have not seen that one in a while.
I found that if you want to adopt this gladiator mindset, it's easier to start with champions that aren't very weak early game or late game, so you can't fall behind too much early and don't have to feel like you're playing on a timer.
Since I started playing Annie following your Annie guide, I'm always calm and I'm having a lot more fun with the game than before.
leave it to curtis to turn a simple 5v5 moba into a philosophical life lesson
this, this is genius
Do you secretly watch me play and make these videos? great vid thanks
Nice curtisiopeia at the end
that was poggers
Hey Curtis I been following your content and recently joined your discord. I was wondering why you don't have a general discussion text channel in it?
Thanks for all ur tips, im 20 hovering mostly around d2, trying to go to masters next season maybe higher who knows, rn its kinda hard for me to climb because i get 10 lp and lose 27, but im winning around 60% of games even tho i have a shit mentality tbh
When Ahri gets back in the meta, could you do an updated content about her? All mid laners have changed a lot with new items, and shifts in their game style are expected
i always talked about positive mental attitude during my first climb to diamond, and its really similar to this. its not optimism, you can acknowledge the bad in the game, yet not let it affect you. negative emotions tend to distract more than a positive mentality. i didnt understand the game at a deep level at the time it was just getting the most joy out of exposing the enemy.
i was also 17 at the time :p but i didnt aspire to go further than d4 for some reason. thats the only thing i regret, not seeing through my full potential
when dopa lost track of his then got ulted by cass. it gives some semblence of hope
nice
a power that transcend the universe itself ?? time to speed run becoming a gladiator
as a D1 17 year old player, I am very excited to watch this video
How tf are you D1 at 17. I legit tryharded for the last 2 seasons just to reach gold1 (from gold4) I'm ready to give up
@@diogocosta6760 focus man, I've only been playing for 2 seasons as well. Focus more on learning from youtube and coaching and review your own gameplay
Damn nice, what's your opgg? I might be able to learn something from it
Yo late comment but holy shit this is so broken i went in with that kind of mentality and went 19/2 9,3 cs per min in the first game thanks for the motivation
Trying hard to keep in this mentality. Mostly end up failing when I'm disapointed in myself for poor play/poor schedule...
good shit
It was fun watching that game aswell, as it still, somehow, seemed winnable at any given point.
Agreed, imagine any other player in that situation, it looks very different
Hey there roman and greek history nerd. Gladiators were rarely ever killed in battle that was like, the one rule no killing gladiator slaves were expensive furthermore by the food and shelter needed for them if they die its gone
Ill make sure to be back here in a few months lol
Well, this mindset you can apply to basically everything. I will try it and see results, but the low elo is a real challenge. Its like, your 0/4 YI in 7 min is gonna report you bcs you didnt help him 1V4.
Hi curtis, im from Argentina!, i used to be a Draven OTP player with realy weak metal, i stomp or i feed and lose, i reach win streaks like 15/20 in a row, but then i lose a LOT like 33 in a row (no joking) going to plat 1 to gold 3 in 2 or 3 days.
Then i make reroll to mid lane, im not good in the early game, so i decide to try kassadin, dats change my mind set A LOT!, i see how i lose all the lines, how im been stomp, but IF I FARM, CHILL, DONT GET KILLED, i can stomp realy hard in late, this mindset and champ FOR ME, get me to d2 last season, and i feel i have a lot to learn.
Why am i saying this? cause maybe there is someone like me searching for something like this. There is no magic champ who can make u challenger, BUT there is a champ who will fit in your tipe of game.

Even Fiora herself loses the side lane vs fed Fiora
@@alb9022 xD, I was just completing the citation: "Even Fiora herself loses the side lane vs fed Fiora"
i think you need to turn your treble down just the taddest bit maybe its gain idk
This Comment is a test if the gladiator mentality works. I am a Plat 1 ADC Main with 45 LP rn gaining 12lp and losing 23. i will edit my Comment every single week
Start: Plat 1 / 45 LP
Week1: Plat 1 / 39 LP ( i played the whole week at least 5 games btw )
I'm almost 18 rn and I wanna try this mentality out, but I have to get my brain to prioritize school over video games first xD, so I'm not going to be able to try this out instantly xD
excuses, just do it while your in game this isnt something you prepare for you just do it
@@zzdahaewae yeah but I meant that I'm trying not to play video games rn because I have plenty of homework, examens and a presentation to prepare xD
Wasn't an excuse by any means
@@Marscompany practice the mindset on your school stuff and it will transition into your game play as well imo
You can still have this mentality when playing games, even if you don't have time to play often.
09:37 "BrTT: KOE DUO?" kkkkkkkkkkkkk BR apenas
this is so weird i just turned 17 today, its like this vid was made for me XD
im 15 and started lol 2 months ago, gold 3 currently, aiming for plat, see yall in the ladder
Hey I’m 17 and I really wanna become a pro player. I just want to say thank you for all your content and especially this one. I felt this one to the heart and it really made me think about the game. I will be using this mindset as much as I can to build the habit thanks so much!!!
hey I have 17. Just the video I needed
can you do a guide on talon?
So what does he do if he has ignite elec and not tp? How does he preform the lvl 5 “cheese?
Is playing fill a good way to learn the basics?
If I was a gladiator, I wouldn't be calm, I guess I would have the bloodrush, the thrill of the kill to survive, I would need my anger to fight. Maybe I'd die early.
I don't agree with everything. Protect yourself at all costs ? But I'm the tank supp, if I have to take a bullet for my carry, I should.
So yeah, point is, one should stay calm, poised and disciplined in order to win more. TDLR : Tilting is bad, got it. But most of the time, people don't enjoy being tilted, they don't tilt on purpose. They most probably get pride in their game, invest so much and have hopes, and waiting 20-40 minutes to not gain anything is frustrating, so being angry is understandable. So yeah, point is we shouldn't get angry, and it's easily understandable. But I would rather need advices on how to stay disciplined/not rage out.
Nicr
I want to be high elo but still have fun and I want to be so fearful that people dodge at my sight when I’m on the other team :)
