    Been cooking on my Auto Kamado since Xmas. Wife got it for as a present at Walmart for $220 on sale. Absolutely love it. First 2 cooks I over lighted it with just one Weber wax cube, and it over shot 225 by 80 degrees. Light it sparingly, and let the fan do the rest. Oh. And it’s super efficient. Charcoal goes forever.

    Tom! I bought the autokomodo after you did your review. This is my #1 grill now! Got mine for $350, then Wally World. Then they had a reduced price to $150, and I told my friends 3 of them got it for that price! This grill is so awesome, mostly since you can use your drill battery to run it, instead of A/C! The casted iron grade sears perfectly!

    Great video! I wondered the same thing. I also got an AK for $225 last year and I really like it. I would never spend $1700 on a grill. I am guessing, based on the AK, that unlike the Masterbuilt Gravity series, you cannot drastically change the temp through the app as the vents need to be manually set. The pressing the button to light the charcoal is a lot more boring than torching or flame gunning the charcoal to get it going.

    G'day Tom, great video. This comparison is very accurate. Buying BBQs is similar to Hi Fi products. People think because their product is 4 or 5 times more expensive, that It has to be better. This is of course is not true.
    The Akorn is a marvellous cooker. Akorn is using a different technique to insulate its BBQs compared to the ceramic style cooker.
    After 40 + years in the building/insulating industry, I believe the Akorn approach is smarter and more hi tech as it's using light weight materials to achieve the same outcome, but at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the weight.
    If the tables were reversed and the Akorn was far more expensive than the ceramic models, I would still buy the Akorn as it really is an intelligent design.
    Ceramics are great but they are old school and old technology. I also love the Weber Kamado and the Blaze Kamado

    Could you swap the original Akorn ash tray out and use the Auto as a manual style when you don't need the fan? Colors wouldn't match but just be nice to have option to use as manual when you want. Thanks!

  • @AndreLederer

    I have the AK and it's the best winter grill (I live in Winnipeg Canada) that I have. But sometimes I wonder if it is too efficient? When I do a long cook like a brisket or a pork butt, I don't seem to get as much smoke on the food as my BGE. With my BGE, it seems to use more coal/wood so I get a better/more smoke flavour. All in all, I'm still experimenting. If I didn't already have my two BGEs and bought the AK first, I would not have bought the BGE. BTW, my temp probe for the AK stopped working and it think it's because of opening and closing the lid a lot wore out the wire. I'm also wondering about the best setup for wood chunks for long cooks on the AK. Cheers.

    For the price and the way it looks, I would honestly go with the Char-Griller Auto. 450$ I can stomach if I was in the market for something like that. 1700$ is just a real tough thing to invest in, unless that was replacing pretty much all of my other cooking equipment. Thank you for the video sir!

    While I don't know about the new Kamado Joe, I know the others are very good at live fire/air movement. I have an AK and find developing bark and crisping skin on chicken isn't quiet the same. Some of the internal setups you can do on the normal Kamado Joes is were those grills shine IMO. Plus, I've run into a bad unit or something. I've have to replace 2 probes and a fan. Now Char Griller was great in giving replacements, but I'm over the electronica thing... I have to be honest though, I'm looking to get a Kamado Joe (Not the new Konnected one) as soon as I save up for one.

    You get what you pay for. I have a few KJ and a regular char griller not the auto one. The food comes out way better on my KJ then the char griller. But the char griller is good for what it is. The auto kamado you can use with it plugged in or as a regular KJ with the door on the bottom. The KJ also has a way better warranty and better quality

    Yeah, steel can rust, but ceramic can crack. If I wanted to get started with a kamado style cooker, I'd go with the Auto Kamado. The most important question is, how does the food taste? When it's well prepared, what grill it came off of is an afterthought.
    I know a few people that have either the Kamado Joe or an Egg. They can easily afford them, but also swear by them. The other things these owners claim that are differentiators for the KJ (other than price), would be how steady the temperature is once you get it dialed in and fuel efficiency. That is obviously due to the mass and insulating properties of the ceramic. That can also be a negative if you want to lower the temperature. I doubt anyone that can afford a KJ is disappointed they bought one.

    • @BrianMiller1973
      @BrianMiller1973 Před rokem +1
