- Hello friends. In this video we will repot our Boxwoods and underplant them with some beautiful new annuals. By using an inexpensive pot, a little spray paint customization, and a few new PW annuals, we've made an improvement that will be better for the boxwoods and look nice in the yard. All of these supplies we purchased at Lowes. Enjoy the process and thanks so much for watching.

I felt it too
Spray paint is a terrific way to freshen up old pots or create a cohesive look to a container garden. If I find a pot on sale or a pot that has a shape I love, I know I can make it work in my yard with a little paint. Those boxwoods look really terrific, and the "feet" give those pots an expensive look. Good job!
Peggy, glad to hear you do that too. I love saving money wherever I can. It's a great idea to refresh old containers with a new coat. It makes them look so good even after years of use. When I found these pots, I thought the same thing. They were the perfect size but wrong color. What an easy fix. Yes, the feet are a new thing I'm trying, but I think you're right. We have been doing this for years
Paint fades so fast and I like keeping things fresh looking and will normally go and spray a quick cost mid summer (hard water) just to keep them nice looking

I've been painting pots for years even ceramic pots I purchase on sale. I use an all surface spray paint. I have pots I painted five years ago that still look great. Saves money and the pots look beautiful. Great video. Thanks for the tips. 5:20
That is awesome! I totally agree. It really is a great way to elevate the look of some of those inexpensive pots. Those beautiful concrete containers are amazing to look at, but outside of my budget. This totally works. Great tip!
When you repot or transplant a root bound bush or tree, you should loosen the rootball. I usually slice 3-4 cuts around the whole rootball. It helps the plant to establish itself in the new hole/pot.

Yea, rake out the roots
Nice ideas. The only mistake you make is not loosening or roughing up the soil of the plants you put in. This helps the roots to gain purchase on the new soil. The roots *could* be circling their original pot. Takes a few seconds but really makes a difference.
Hi there. Yeah, a couple people have been asking me that question. I know that a lot of people rough the roots before they transplant. I have done that before in the past as well. After doing some research, and transplanting without doing that, I have found that it’s really not necessary. But as I’ve explained in previous comments, it’s really a preference. I’ve had many boxwoods that I haven’t, and they did beautifully. 😀
Either way, the plants are going to do fine. Thanks for noticing that. I probably should have explained why I choose not to. Maybe in a future video.
Tree and shrub roots are too fragile to do that. No need to damage the roots.

there is a lot of recent feedback from professional growers, such as proven winners, that breaking root memory is not a benefit, in fact, it could prove damaging to the plant. this doesn't matter if the plant is being placed in a container or native soil. severely root bound plants, scratching the bottom a small amount may be helpful. there are plants such as hellebores that are heavily root bound when they come out but they do not want that disturbed

Once you have removed the plant from its old pot, it’s easier to place that empty pot inside the bigger one and pack the soil under and around the pot. You can lift it out and move it around much easier than trying to navigate the plant itself. Water that soil and small pot and when you remove it, the plant will pop into the perfect mould you made for it. Water again after.

My grandmother’s house had HUGE boxwoods. Whenever I smell one, it brings back sweet times.
They were SO big that we kids would play inside of them. ❤️🌳

I saw on Bunny MxGuinneses channel. She cut the bottom of the pot for boxwoods and they put their roots straight into the ground !😅

I love box woods, and I have lots of them front and back. I also recently potted 2 boxwoods in orange terra cotta pots, and planning to under plant with spring annuals as well.

Nice! I might try the drip line. What I do have on my container of Arborvitae is drain holes on the sides (1 inch up) as well just in case the bottom ones plug up and they do on occasion.
That's a great idea! Yeah, drainage is super important for these evergreens. The boxwoods seem to do well with this system and actually thrive even with water needs of the annuals. That was a surprise to me. Thanks so much for taking time to comment. :)🌿 Happy gardening.

One thought regarding moving these pots ... we put the 'carpet glide feet' on all yard furniture and heavy pots .. then even I can shimmy or pull a pot to/from a spot, depending on temp and season. In your case, the clay feet will not endure the combination of heavy pot weight and friction on pavement. The glider feet are a win win .. come in small rounds & squares...
Wow, what a wonderful idea. I have seen these things every so often. Just having them off the ground does them wonders, but having the flexibility to move your containers is great. Laura from Garden Answer spray paints her pots too, and under plants her boxes with annuals too. I love the spray painting idea but am not a fan of boxes or underplanting.

With very stiff, hard plastocs, I've had some trouble with the bottom of the pot sort of shattering when I drill or punch our the hole. An old heat gun is my solution---it melts a hole like a hot knife thru butter, no fracturing or bits flying around or dust. also easier, no drill bit to dig up, just heat & press.

Yes. A sautering tip or a wood burning tip (using a wide enough tip) do beautifully for holes in plastic flower pots. Much less cumbersome of a task. My preference over drilling, because I have done both.
I noticed you didn't rough up the roots before planting. You don't usually do this? Great info on the paint to use and to keep things looking cohesive in the yard. Thanx

Good morning Eileen. Thanks for stopping by and for your nice comment. Actually no, they’ll be fine since the superbells like to dry out a bit, I have found that both plants do really well together. I have used petunias, which require more water and it wasn’t as good of a pairing. These, however, will do just fine. Thanks again and have a great day!🌿🌱

I love this idea! Cant wait to see how you use the rest of your annuals. Also, I learned from one of your older videos that you use the moisture control soil from miracle grow and bough it for my potted annuals and am absolutely loving it. Also noticed the newer potted superbells on the fence and I'm amazed how small the pot itself is and how full and round it turns out! You wouldn't know it was such a small pot. One last thing, can we just get more of your sweet chocolate pup? 😅 alright thats all!
Thanks so much KeishlaMRH!! You are so kind to comment. I'm glad you tried the moisture control soil and liked it. It really does help the plants stay happy. I know what you mean about the pots on the wall. I'm limited on the size of the pot I can use because the bracket that holds the pot is only so big. Everything in me wants to give them a bigger container, but it really hasn't been a problem. The only time where they can suffer is when it's extremely hot because the pot only can hold so much moisture. Still, that really hasn't been an issue either. They grow huge no matter what. I had planted supertunias in them at first, but I think the supercells do better because they actually do like to dry out a bit. Lastly, I'm sure you'll see more of our Chocolate Millie. I would add some pea gravel or drainage rock on the bottom of these pots before you add any soil. These holes might clog over time and the rock would help keep them from clogging. I would also disturb the roots so they do not become root bound
I can attest to everything that you mentioned here. As a young gardener, these were the steps that I was trained to do for potted plants.

Hello Australian friend!!! That’s so cool! So kind of you to comment. Yes, I’ve had questions about that rose. It’s a floribunda rose called “Sunflare”. It’s an amazing variety and I’ve had it about 26 years. They also do great when planted as a hedge. Happy gardening!! 🌿🌿

Lovely vid. You have such a great garden.. I'm not very good at container growing. What's the plant on the right of you beautiful yellow rose? and on the right of that, is it actually a stone water feature that you've planted some succulents in?
So nice of you to stop by and comment. Yes, container gardening has challenges sometimes and I have had many, many times where they didn't work out. It can be so frustrating for sure. One thing that helped me find more successes was when I started using Proven Winners annuals. They just seemed to be more hardy and really did better for me. If you find some, you might want to give them a try. I used them at my moms house too and they've done exceptional for her. The plant to the right of the rose is a very old hibiscus shrub that's really been struggling lately. You're right, that is a water feature and my youngest daughter put some succulent pics that we picked up at the dollar tree on various levels of the fountain to dress it up a bit. Glad you liked it. It's an 8in cordless craftsman hedge trimmer. It's great for light duty like these topiaries. I wouldn't use them for large projects, but for these, it works perfectly. Thanks for stopping my and for your question.

Yes, they’ll be happier having more room for sure. I have found that it’s not necessary to loosen the roots and they’ll do just fine. I’ve not disturbed the roots on a bunch of things I’ve planted and I see no difference from when I loosen and when I plant aa is. Everyone does it their own way, keeping it in tact has been good for me. These boxwoods were a gift, but I think they’re your everyday variety. I know they’re not Japanese or green mountain because they are different from those plants that I have in my garden. They came from the Home Depot. They’re extremely hardy. When you put the drip line in from the bottom, you thread it all the way back up to the surface of the soil? Or you keep it near the bottom of the planter. Just checking as a novice novice gardener. I’d read something about watering from the bottom and wasn’t sure if you were doing something like that...

We’ve been having summers of 105+ here in Texas. Will the drip system be enough to keep the pots watered or they need to be drenched every once in awhile?

I have two huge plastic pots that are terracotta in color. I'm not a fan of the color but worry that spray painting won't last very long. What spray paint did you use and how long does it last before chipping off? I've thought about other products to cover the pot but need some advice.
Hello there. I used rustolium all surface. It is good for plastic, wood, etc. I actually did this once before and I was surprised how long it lasted. It could use a touch up on that pot now, but it's been at least 3 years. Not bad. If you have a pot that needs a refresh, this is a great way to spruce it up. mine lasted about 2 years, it flaked off now barely a trace of the paint in North Central FL but easy enough to repaint with all purpose including plastic. Good to use a primer for plastic first off which I will do this time.

No, I haven't had a problem with that since the tubing is inclosed and comes out above the soil level, Works great. :)

Of course. I actually don't do anything but let them grow. They naturally take that shape as they fill in and mature. Superbells from Proven Winners have never failed to impress. The fact that they will grow like that naturally is one of many amazing attributes that make these plants so amazing. Hope this helps. No extra care needed to create that look. :)
Is there a reason you don't ruff up the root ball of the boxwood?
Hello Kay. Great question. I’ve done that before in the past, and I’ve transplanted without disturbing the root ball too. I have found that it’s not necessary do do so and had success either way. What size were the Boxwoods when you first purchase them?
Oh my goodness.. you wouldn't believe it... they were in a small gallon container. They were sooooo small. My wife actually purchased them for me and they're now close to 4 years old. They are so heathy. Thanks for watching and for your question. Have a great day.

I don't know in what zone you are but me I am in 5B. I bought Clematis and other plants yesterday. I tried to make a hole in the soil but I am disabled and it's really hard for me. If I plant like you in plastic pots, what do you do with yours in winter (if you have a cold cold winter like me) . Can I put the pink blanket that we use to isolate a house in the walls to prevent the roots frozen?? Help please.
Hello there. Thanks for your question. We’re actually in So Cal zone 10. But still you might be able to overwinter in a smaller pot inside in a sunny location by a window. I’m not sure how the blanket will work to be insulate the pot. You could try as an experiment but I would think it would depend on how harsh your winters are. Hi there. That rose is a floribunda variety called "Sun Flare" I absolutely love it. In fact I would highly recommend it as it is pretty hardy and doesn't have vary many issues. That plant is about 27 years old. :) Have a great day.
Hoe effective is the drip line with getting the water into the upper region of the pot without a wick?
It works really well, because the drip line is circled around the top. I really like how it works.

Very pretty. Those double petunias really catch the eye and the colors compliment one another so well. I plan on underplanting a hydrangea on a standard later today after watching this! I’m curious to know your planting zone. I have wintered over a couple boxwoods in planters, as well as the hydrangea, but my larger one didn’t make it through to this year. I honestly think it may have been more related to lack of moisture than temperature. I’m not sure. How do you prepare your pots for winter? I live in Zone 5B. Thank you sharing your efforts. Hello Pamela. Thanks for your nice comment Glad you liked this project. I've been wanting to do this for a while now, so I was so glad to get it done. I'm in an area where we don't have extreme cold. We're here in So Cal zone 10.. You're probably right about not having enough moisture. I find that to be true when it gets either too hot or cold here. We don't get as cold as you do, but when we do get down to 32 (I know, that's nothing... hehe) It really does cause problems when there's not enough moisture. Where did you get the pots?
I purchased them from Lowe’s about 2 months ago. They were from their own store brand, which I can’t remember the name. They were a great deal for about $26 each. I also only used 1 can of $10 spray paint. Thanks for your question.🪴🌿🌱

I got them at Lowe’s. They had them just for a short while in early spring. I know what you mean, I was looking for something like them for a long while. Congrats on your retirement. Yay! Welcome to the garden! I really feel like less is more with these evergreens. You can use Plant Tone, or even Holly Tone by Epsoma. Also, some varieties do turn slightly brown in fall and winter but then green up in the spring and summer. Here are some links to help you out:

You should break up your pot bound roots a bit so it has an easier time in the new soil .

Where is the emitter placed within the pot?
Hello, the drip line goes through the bottom of the pot and then comes out above the soil level. At that point I run tubing that has emitters every 12 in ran in a circle on that surface area. Works great!

It is important to first break apart the roots that are so root bound, when they are wrapped around themselves the plant will not thrive as long.

Hello! Great question. I have one that I painted about 7 years ago and it is just now needed me a touch up. I would assume that harsh weather would play a factor in how long they would last. I also think that the paint helps protect them a bit. Hope this helps. 🌿
Lifting a pot full of potting mix is easier than lifting a bag of potting mix?
Oh yes. The bags that I use are from Sam's Club and are huge which makes for a strenuous pour. They have 2 cubic ft of wet soil in each bag, which is quite heavy. Even thought I have upper body strength, a pot half filled with soil is much lighter and easier to pour. In this situation, it was all about safety and keeping from getting an injury. :)
