Simple youngsters.. zero ego.. and ready to die for captain...
I think Ganguly was like watching Subash Chandra Bose in real life, his men were ready to die for him and he was ready to die for them, that team won hearts hands down. Today's kids are talented but they hardly are gentlemen, but boys.

Kaif's delivered his best when India needed him the most, be it 2002 Champions Trophy match against Zimbabwe, 2002 Natwest Trophy Final, 2004 against Pakistan where he partnered with Dravid in a run chase. I really feel for him, he was one of my favourite players in that Indian team. Unfortunately his inconsistencies got the better of him and he could never get back into the team. Ganguly's exclusion from the team in 2005, meant the captain who had backed Kaif for so long was no longer there. So, after the 2006 series against West Indies, there was no one to fight for him even though he did well in that tournament. India had a younger Kaif in Suresh Raina who not only was an amazing fielder but also a better batsman. Raina had a great captain in Dhoni who always fought for him and supported him even when Raina underperformed a lot. Unfortunately for Kaif, Ganguly was out of the team and by the time he made his comback, Kaif was already gone. Ganguly was already a legend when he left, Kaif could have been if he had a bit more time. I really feel for the guy, for me he's the best Indian fielder of all time,
Just like how Chappell tried to make an opening batter and pacer out of a genuine swing bowler like Irrfan, same thing he did that with Kaif by trying to make the latter an out and out batter. Kaif's main strength was his fielding. Remember, a good batter may not score all the times, but a good fielder will save 15-20 runs easily matches after matches.

Totally remember the ODI vs Pak in 2004 where Kaif stole the catch from the hands of Hemang Badani. And that Nick Knight run out in WC game in SOuth AFrica where Ashish Nehra took 6 wickets for 23 runs. These memories will stay in my head for the lifetime.
People usually forget his 35 odd run innings in 2003 WC against Pakistan, for me that small inning and partnership with sachin made match for india, it was his best inning

Ah when he said the early morning winter games in NZ AUS, I literally got goosebumps from the memories. Those were the good ol days. I remember the players wearing white sweaters, low scoring matches and waking up at 4.30 in the morning like kaif said. Awesome days.

In my opinion, he is one of the best fielders in the world simply because he was dependable with his fielding skills and that is the definition of being best. If the ball went towards his direction, it was already considered saved or caught or even run-out.
