    Hearing a lot of your points has kinda opened my mind to what legends arceus seems to be missing that I never understood. I think you’re right in thinking the locales are missing some landmarks, especially in a map based open world setting. I get it’s a time before civilization was set up but Monster Hunter has implemented so many well crafted natural landmarks in each map that just stand out and legends is just a lot of flat ground. I don’t have a huge problem with the graphics since it does seem to be an artistic choice but I do kinda wish it had the same quality as the new Pokémon snap. I was also worried when you mentioned quest variety but apparently people who got it early say that there’s decent variety so that’s a relief. I do think this is an interesting change to Pokémon and a much needed step in the right direction, hopefully many Pokémon games later down the line take what legends did and expand upon it and perfect the craft, it’s a much needed shake up to Pokémon as we know it, even if it is Pokémon with monster hunter elements I mean just look at how beloved monster hunter is. I personally believe legends should spend at the very least another year in the oven. It looks great compared to the generation 6 block. Pokémon seems to have been improving a little each generation after that. Sun and Moon were fantastic and much more impressive than XY, even if it still wasn’t for everyone. Sword and Shield has problems, many problems. I personally enjoyed them because I saw the good they brought with making Pokémon more accessible to people who want to play competitive and dabbled with the idea of open world with the wild area and the DLC zones. I don’t count BDSP since they’re just DP HD and were frankly disappointing, I don’t even have the strength to play past the 3rd city right now it’s just so lame. I wish the Pokémon company would let gamefreak take more time before releases, it’s not gamefreak’s fault it’s the company that owns them because if it was gamefreak’s fault BDSP wouldn’t have sucked, and sun and moon being a more visually impressive game than XY and taking more time to develop was a result of what could improve if gamefreak was able to take more time to develop the game. I just wish TPCI wouldn’t just pump out a Pokémon game every 1-2 years so that we can actually get the quality we want. Sorry to go on a rant but yeah, as someone excited for legends, I have a fair bit of skepticism too, but I hope it’s a good game because it looks better than what Swsh and BDSP brought to the table

      @@toastythomas Ok, yes I understand. But nor was I really but in his responses to me he was being awkward and wasn't presenting himself so well for a so-called 'content creator'. It's just that there are so many people saying the same old tired things citing features they want on the basis of treating this as a Xenoblade or actual Monster Hunter game. Why should Pokémon have to follow the crowd and lose it's identity and charm by characters belting out cringey and crummy accent dialogues?? I would hate that and anyway, people (who watch it) have the anime for that.
      My view here; but I feel Breath1 did it and while I admire Aonuma's bravery - Breath1 lost a lot of the 'soul' of Zelda; the inspiring and exciting dungeons were replaced with bland clones of enemies, snoozy shrines forever and shattering weapons in a bland Open world. The novelty wore off after 3-4 hours when you found out anything you fought for would break. Well, the Pokémon don't break!
      For me, Pokémon totally went in the right direction with Legends Arceus. The quirks, the fact that of course you don't want the place brimming with Poekmon that would be weird and unusual and just awkward in terms of the actual gameplay mechanics and element of surprise.
      Of course, there will be flaws; but these can always be applied in an update. Remember, this thing didn't even exist 365 days ago; it was only the (truly) disappointing Sword and Shield. People glaze over these facts and want a Pokémon Starfield in about 2 years turnover.

  • @aruce9
    @aruce9 Před 2 lety +73

    I think the skepticism felt around this game is very valid. I am hopeful that this is a good step in the right direction from sword and shield. Sword and shield are painfully mediocre games with a boring story and bland level design. This feels very reminiscent of breath of the wild and I hope that this is Pokémons breath of the wild moment. The huisui forms as a whole are a mixed bag with some outstanding designs and some really bad designs. The difference between Pokémon and Kirby is that Kirby is given years to flesh out its games I think there is around a gap of 2-3 years with planet robobot being the exception. Pokemon since x and y feels rushed and not well thought out. Meanwhile Kirby at least has its interesting lore and solid gameplay to back up a stale feeling formula. I hope legends arceus is good, Pokemon needs this after sword and shield

    It looks like Monster Hunter but without the grand scale and plethora of options of playing that makes Monster Hunter beloved. I admit it might be unreasonable for me to expect them to go too far from the formula but it really does just look like the same typical Pokemon game but now you have to dodge a bit before getting into the actual battle.
    I left a comment in previouse video about the discussion of pricing in games and how I don't mind paying extra for shorter games if the experience is substantial since it feels like a lot of long games just drag out their limited content far beyond their actual enjoyment. I could be wrong, but it feels like it's going to be one of those games: Hours of content, all of it the same and none of it really fun.

    I’ve played the game for about 12ish hours now and so far I’m super conflicted on it. There’s some genuine strides here when it comes to menuing, wild battles, catching, animations, movement, all that stuff. The problem is that the game was so clearly rushed out, it’s easily the least polished game in the series and while I haven’t seen anything game breaking, it’s a super janky experience.
    The gameplay loop is also super repetitive and you’ll hardly be doing anything outside of searching, catching, and interacting with wild Pokémon (which is fun) and the occasional boss (the two I’ve fought were shallow). Your rewards for exploring are almost always Pokémon or crafting materials which are good motivators but eventually you start yearning for a cool hidden area or something.
    The music has been great so far, wasn’t a fan of the music in SWSH or BDSP but outside of a few stinkers the music here is real good, there’s even some adaptive stuff I noticed which is neato.
    It’s simultaneously the best mainline Pokémon in half a decade and a huge mess if that makes sense. I’ve been enjoying it but I have a bias towards the series, even I can acknowledge just how messy it really is. The state this game was released in is straight up embarrassing and the worst part is that it may take years and years for any of these improvements to show up outside of Legends. I don’t buy the idea that the next games aren’t releasing this year, there’s a reason they rushed this game out a mere two months after the remakes. I’d love to be proven wrong but Pokémon Day (a day that’s often ripe with announcements for the series) is about one month away after Legends Arceus releases.

      @xXxthe_epic_gamerxXx Před 2 lety +1

      @@ProtoBrown I dunno what you think I have to gain by lying to you but those were just my thoughts on the game so far.
      The gameplay loop almost entirely consists of gathering materials and catching Pokémon. Almost every side quest also feed into that loop of gathering and catching. I don’t even think it’s an unfun cycle but it’s absolutely repetitive in nature.
      Maybe the bosses get better later on but the two Noble Pokémon I’ve fought so far were very shallow, their attack patterns are extremely simple and you aren’t even required to fight them with your Pokémon. Alpha Pokémon are a lot more fun because you have to work around their powerful stats AND catching them rather than just picking a super effective move and KOing them.
      It’s totally fine if you don’t agree with any of this but don’t claim I haven’t played the game just because my opinion doesn’t line up with yours.

Like I could be fine with having a landscape that just existed as an excuse for me to go catch and battle with pokemon but neither of those things even look very fun. Like I can't believe this is the first pokemon game to introduce something like a power and speed type option. Like that kind of choice would have been greatly appreciated maybe like half a decade ago, but now it just feels like it's too little too late. It's hard to consider the pokemon combat system fun after playing a plethora of other and just better monster collector games. I love the pokemon designs but the fact that we're left with such a shallow way to engage with them in combat is disappointing. To me it just feels like they don't understand what people want and they just refuse to innovate any further than giving us a different way to do what we've always done. Sure, sneaking up to pokemon and throwing the ball at them is different from just selecting the option from a menu, but it achieves the same goal and presents nothing really meaningful. I think they should have embraced the pre-modern thing a little harder and just made pokeballs work completely differently. Like instead of just zapping them into the balls like we're used to, we could have done a more monster hunter approach and lured them into traps or something. I don't know what could have been done that would have made this game seem more fun than it looks, I just wish it did.

    Although I am hyped for this game, the first time I've actually looked forward to a pokemon game since ultra moon (and that was a bit lackluster graphicwise, but nice storywise). I do agree with many of your points that it can be better and have more things to do than catch pokemon and have more landmarks than empty open areas. I do have some hope for this game as it is at least different than the original washed out formula. But if Nintendo is going to have to take baby steps into better more exciting games, then so be it. But yea, you're not alone in those concerns

    Exactly! That’s why I’m so annoyed when people say “it’s the breath of the wild for Pokémon.” Botw had things to look at. Cool places to explore. Meanwhile this game looks like it isn’t finished. Literally one guy made a video where he made his own legends arceus and the graphics didn’t look too different.

    The game itself looks alright. I'm don't really play Pokemon games for the graphics, so that doesn't bother me, however the repetitive gameplay point you brought up seems like a very good point when looking at these quests. This is definitely a step in the right direction, however I have a feeling that I am going to be thinking the same thing as other recent Pokemon games: "With some more time, this could've been great". I am definitely not picking the game up on release as I made that mistake with BDSP (which wasn't bad, but I don't think it was worth $60). I will say the new Kirby game looks loads better and I will be picking that up as soon as I can. I really hope one day I can be excited about a new Pokemon game again.

    I personally think this game might end up being one of the best main line pokemon games in a LONG time. The ideas and mechanics, from what I saw from both the trailers and from leaked footage, look pretty fun imo, but the only thing that I'm worried about is the execution of those ideas and mechanics. Regardless, I believe this is the push that pokemon really needed and hopefully they use this game as a "base" for the next mainline pokemon games. Looking forward to playing it!

    I think I'm at a point where I just simply grew out of Pokémon, and this game just doesn't have anything that stands out to me visually to be worth the hype. I got Shining Pearl for that nostalgia rush, but that'll probably be the end of Pokémon for me afterwards.

    If there's any IP that could probably do open-world well it'd be Pokemon given adventure and wanderlust are some of the themes every installment has as its premise. But this, frankly, looks dead. Environments look lifeless and the art's passable but the Pokemon stand out a little too much compared to everything you're looking at; like they've been Photoshopped in. It's weird - Not quite uncanny valley but very....noticeable?
    Honestly this reminds me of Dynasty Warriors 9 and its attempts to do open-world stuff ages after the hype for that genre dwindled. And just like this is already looking, 9 was a soulless resource collect-a-thon that missed the point of why people play it. Difference here being that 9 was essentially a different game that forsook its roots to be a collect-a-thon whereas Arceus is staying true to its roots but has only increased its scope in-name-only and seems oriented ONLY around the collection while doing little else.
    Even with its built-in brand-advantage, this looks more like a beta-tier tech-demo than a game.

      I think for RPGs especially it’s really important to have a world that’s interesting to look at/explore. One of my favorite rpgs of all time, earthbound, was released with the technical limitations of the SNES but still has one of the most interesting worlds of any rpg I’ve ever played. So they can definitely make it interesting with the limitations of the switch, the thing is, will they put forth the effort?

    This is why I've never been a big fan of just making things "open world." They're games that can go very wrong if not done properly because sometimes there'll be this open world but nothing to do instead of there being cool areas to explore or things to do. I just haven't really seen anything that'll get me super interested. I have objectives where I catch Pokemon......aaaaand? They just haven't given me a very big and yet except maybe riding on Braviary. There's just so much nothing and the graphics aren't doing the heavy lifting so what am I looking forward to that isn't just catching Pokemon. I don't know, there's just a lot I'm skeptical about with this games, obviously I don't want it dumping all it's marbles on the floor like Sun and Moon and appreciate a game with surprises but with Pokemon I don't know whethertheir hiding stuff to be a surprise or if they just don't have anything else to show. I'm obvioulsly still somewhat excited since Pokemon is finally trying something new on a (seemingly) bigger scale and think it's a good time for that especially with SwSh being......SwSh and the DP remakes being absolute disappointments. I just hope it's not making a big deal out of basically nothing.

    It also feels really concerning how "hush hush" they've been about this game. Like...we haven't seen any of the new forms (officially) other than like the 3 Pokemon. They haven't showed us any of those huge Pokemon or hyped up Arceus itself. And there hasn't even been like a Direct or anything substantial for marketing in the lead up to this. It really feels like Game Freak has no confidence in this game.

    I compare to the graphics to Breath of the Wild, a game that came out in 2017 that was made with both WiiU and Switch specs in mind and manages to look absolutely stunning and lush on the Switch. The terrain textures weren't the best in BotW because, it's still the switch, not expecting 4k textures here, but they at least hide it with all the grass, flora, and other set pieces. However, Legends Arceus does neither of these things, you see the ugly terrain textures, it doesn't have grass as lush as BotW, it legit feels like I'm playing an older game from like Wii or XBox 360, like OG Skyrim on XBox 360 and it's terrain looked ugly, but now give it less grass. Thats how this game looks to me.
    NOW I totally understand graphics aren't everything, and I agree. But the gameplay... I dunno... It's always been a HUGE red flag for me when a game doesn't show off too much gameplay, like ACTUAL gameplay, not oooooooo~ running through the fields, ooooooo flying and gliding. I'm talking, this is what the game will be like when you play it. The most I get from it is just the more seamless battles and that you can get killed now, that's about it.
    I'm thinking about getting this game, BUT I'm waiting at least like a few weeks, get some reviews and updates in then see how I feel if I want to actually commit to getting it.

    I'm being cautious. I haven't bought a Pokemon game since Y and so far nothing past that game has enticed me to come back. Mostly because of them reusing the same formula with negligible differences. Just got burnt on that front. Legends Acreus just looks barren. I would compare it to Horizon Zero Dawn when it comes to the open world. I don't think the game has anything to keep me interested. I can tell you that Breath of the Wild does a much better job than what Horizon has done and Acreus is trying to do.

    I never really looked into this game that much, however, hearing your take on it is pretty much something to be skeptic about. And after you brought up the missions being like "catching this pikeman, get this stick, get be some berries," I do feel as if they are trying to lean into more of a monster hunter like aspect for Pokemon. As, interesting as that sounds it would be technically a clone of Monster Hunter but with Pokemon, furthermore, let's take Elden Rings for an example granted I haven't played that game yet but I have seen, and heard some good things about it. Where the open world aspect gives you dungeons, stealth options, gather items to be ready for another fight or to craft, and bosses that would be coming for you before you even know it. Even though, Elden Rings is like Dark Souls, combined with Shadows Dies Twice, it technically kinda has it's own Identity.

With this game I was expecting the environments to be MORE than mountains and forests. Like taking Pokemon lore to the next level. For example: "This Pokemon is causing the trees to come to life!!! Run for your life!!!".
    "LOOK AT THE SIZE OF GROUDON! WE GETTING SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS HERE!".

    This would be 10000 times better if this had stuff like castles and more towns/buildings nobody remembers pokemon places like OH YES ROUTE 69, no, pokemon always has pushed more memorable cities with buildings and stuff like that.
