- In this video I show how I make my fire basket! A fun project involving some basic techniques and repetition making several matching pieces. It's a lot of work though, and I underestimated the time needed for this project :)

I am transfixed each time I watch a video from you, Torbjorn. But this one took me to a whole new level. There are soooo many blacksmiths out there making blades, but too few showing great craftsmanship making and building other things. I've been a follower for several years now and you never disappoint. I'm very thankful you sacrifice your time for us. Thank you! This project is in my future. John is right, it came out perfect.

As I was watching this, I thought, “That’s pretty cool, very clever. Now if it weren’t for all those ugly bolts.” Then you started making the rivets and I went “Ah!” Well done! Happy New Year to you and your family.

Was thinking the same, that it'd be better with rivets, then he forged them as I thought it. Left me happy, lol.

Saw the plated nuts and bolts and knew rivets would follow. Unplated hardware? Still would have expected rivets. :)

American here, gotta say, the look of the millimeter tape measure is so clean and makes me jealous.
No inches are better
In Scotland we have tapes with metric and inches (Imperial)

@@hrxy1 No, mm are better. 1 cm is 2 parts 5mm each. 1 inch is in 4 main parts. Each of this main parts is splitted on 2 smaller parts - and each of the smaller parts is splitted on next 4 smaller parts. Too complicated, easy to make a mistake.
@@mago_8145 no an inch is more organic in terms of proportion, as is a foot. Divisible by 6,4,3,&2. An inch&aquarter, is proportional to 1foot 3inches. An inch halfed is half an inch, halved is quarter, halved an eighth, halved 16th halved is a 32 balved is a 64th, its easier, and its always proportional to an inch and a foot. 3 dimensionally it's more pleasing to the eye, which is why modern cars, tvs fridges and all modern appliances look like shit.

Thanks John! I don't keep track, but I probably worked on it for about 2 weeks in total. Actual metal production maybe one week... not sure. Filming adds a lot of overhead....

The look on your face though when you dumped the pile of rivets on the forge to start making them sure said "Why did I decide to do this again?" Lots of repetitive work, but the end result is amazing!

Dude, that seemed like a ton of work. When you put the first rod back into the fire I realised the scope of what you were doing there - all these separate steps, so many of 'em, and you had to reheat it almost every time! With every time you put a stack of stuff onto the "finished" pile, you seemed more angry in the way you put them down ^^
I hope your family likes to huddle around it as well :)

@@torbjornahman Exactly. Complete the thirty-fourth difficult, complicated, aggravating piece with satisfaction. Then remember you still have four hundred and eight-one to go. (sigh...) And a deadline that disagrees more and more strongly with probable completion. Experience from my machinist days, of course. Very different, but still very similar, I'm sure. :)
Thank you for providing these tires of metal working videos. I've never been that interested in blades, these videos have given me new insight in what I want to craft.
Now I just need to make the time..
I watched this when it came out a year ago, and I continue to watch this video repeatedly about once a month. It's my favorite thus far, I love the look of it, I love to watch you work with the care you take and the patience you have to do the job right and do it right the first time to make a quality piece that will clearly last for years if its taken care of. This is so good on so many levels. The craftsmanship is methodical and thorough. Eg. the chamfers on the outside of the rivets vs. the flat finish on the inside give it that rounded softened feel. The Christmas theme and final fire make it feel comforting and warm. It's so good, I'll probably come back to watch it again and again. It's like blacksmithing ASMR.

It's such a pure pleasure watching the mental image being realized in solid metal when it comes out just as good as you pictured it. I also loved the patient efforts of your children which mirror your example.

The skill and attention to detail is a pleasure to watch.
What impresses me with each project is just how intricate the process is and how skillful you have to be whether forging a delicate lotus leaf or creating a brazier such as this....and the phrase "strike while the iron is hot" comes to mind. I work with wood, so all it takes for me is patience. Beautiful, as well, is the contrast between the hammer and the fire and the creation of a delicate gingerbread house. May you and your family be blest for the new year, my friend.
And as a smith how he keeps his hands so "hand model" clean! LOL!

I've said it before and I'll say it again you have to be the best Blacksmith on the planet hands down ! Your craftsmanship sets the standard for all other blacksmiths past and present. its Amazing to watch raw stock pass through your door and come out a Masterpiece and never to be duplicate.

This is an excellent job, but the best blacksmith in the world would have forge welded those hoops together. I have seen it done by my mentor who is 90 years old and began his apprenticeship at 14 years old. Well done Thunder Bear, I am always learning from you. Happy New Year.
@@davidbutler3661 Forge welding the rings would have been possible of course, but since the distance between the holes is quite important you would have to make some test pieces to know exactly how much material you would have to add to the ends.
Yes that's true, I have only a little experience with this, but I have seen my mentor Malcolm just do a few calculations on the table with a piece of chalk then cut the stock and weld it in the fire for a great result every time. I guess that's what comes with 75 years experience. I am just glad that I can learn from him and also wonderful people like you.

Wonderful work, good video, fantastic assistants, best gingerbread church I've seen all year! LOL My grandpa built a "blazer" (his word) out of steel pipe and when fully loaded you had to stand 20 feet away! Yours is so much more stylish and a little smaller. Happy 2021!
