CAMPING IN RAIN under a self made shelter.

- solo camping under this bushcraft shelter I made from a sheet made to protect mild steel from bad weather.
winter camping can be hard work because we are working against the weather.
I would not say my shelter comes under a survival shelter or a bushcraft survival shelter or even a primitive technology skilled building shelter.
As you can see within my video, I make a simple shelter to keep the rain off me.

If you never try, you'll never know, the experience of trying and learning is...priceless
no need to put holes in the tarp, just find a round stone or acorn and wrap tarp around it then tie the cord around it, makes a great fastening with no holes needed . its what they used in the stone age
Yea bad move if the weather turns!
The stone age and the acorn age.
Good idea 👍 that 💯✌️
Every day is a school day , 😊
@@jameshollyoak8230 I agree 200%
There’s an ancient feeling that when you’re in any shelter and it’s raining it makes you feel so content and relaxed in a shelter. It’s an ancient sense that we have.
I prefer this type of camping over watching videos that are polished in terms of editing, lighting, and gear, making everything appear brand new and unused. Good job, mate!
Awesome, thank you!
The sound of rain on top of a tent or any kind of shelter is so relaxing and like ASMR 🌧️ 🏕️
“Hot chocolate in the pocket - be that person!” 👍🏼😉😁
Nice sound of rain on the tarp👍👍
This is what kids should be learning about. Being close to nature, self reliance, appreciating the simple things in life. I know I wish I'd learned this when I was young.
All I wanted to do was camp when I was younger

Glad the pebble idea was cited.
I would put the ridge line high because I prefer a hammock. Fix the tarp to one side of the ridge two - feet off centre and use a second tarp. That would give nine odd feet clear and act as a roof tile so no rain gets in.
I did a basic camp last weekend. Just a tarp, ground sheet, bivvy and sleeping bag, it chucked it down! Thanks for saying be that person and get out there. Stay safe Dan atvb 👍👍👍👍👍🦊
Sounds great!
Don't rip the plastic, it will just tear in the wind.
Find a pebble, rap corner of plastic around the pebble and then you tie the rope over the plastic around the pebble.
Hi Dan, I was going to make the same comment re. a pebble or a small piece of wood, It doesn't weaken or damage the sheet. An entertaining video if a bit different from your usual stuff The phone video footage was ok.
I was about to suggest the same thing
@@marcusfridh8489 Great minds think alike.
Dan I love your videos, I am an ex Infantry Man, so I have spent a lot of time in the field, living in a trench, under a poncho etc. I loved that way of life. I'm 57 and after the forces I did a lot of what you are doing, well before it became a big thing. Sadly due to serious health issues those days are over. So watching you brings back so many memories ad feelings.
Ignore the haters, keep doing what you are doing, we need more like you, All the best from Pee.
Thank you for your comment
Me and my girlfriend watch your videos every night before bed! Your an inspiration we are planning on going camping how you do, in style😎
Love sunday eves watching your vids Dan ,and have for years ,crack on pal ,keep em coming .
Honest bloke ,not big headed ,just a simple working bloke doing what he likes to do....and we all love what he does ....all t best from Lincolnshire Dan👍
well said about the person who was slating the channel Dan😂😂 well that worked out well for the fool didn't it lol, Dan I truly believe you got more subs because its very apparent how genuine & down to earth you are & the way you deal with situations like that says a whole lot about your character!💯 👍
NOTE TO THE HATER:
Thank you for helping to grow our "English woodsman family" , your effort is appreciated👌😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love your channel, Your videos are raw and they show everything just how it happened good or bad, I love listening to you and watching you enjoy your camping, I also love how you have all the gear but decided to use that plastic blue tarp as a tent, It might not have worked the best but at least you gave it a go and you enjoyed it, Keep up the great work 👍
I keep coming back to watch this! Bril video. Loved camping in tents and rain macs folded over bikes as a kid, in the porch. I really need to go out and do this!
Well done Lad, your video is all about getting out having some quiet Time away from Life, it's not over expensive or highly created and that makes it feel genuine and honest. Continue doing your own thing
Good that you prepare with extra stove fuel, did well in rain n mud without much heat.
Hi Dan.
Great old fashioned video. No difference in picture quality or sound my end. That set up is how I started I used to find rubbish as I walked to camp. 👍👍👍👍👍
Make most of what we find mate
Brilliant video, keep up the great work mate
Nice 1 Dan. As I always say haters gonna hate. You'll smash 100k mate keep up the good work 👍
🥰🥰🥰 Dude you are gonna get there, good things come to those that wait and have hearts of gold 🤩
Just keep doing what your doing 😍
I love watching you from Utah my Name is Susan . We have really tall Mountains. And camping and hiking in the the Mountains. All around the Valley's where people live.
As much as I enjoy watching you try out new camping stuff, the main reason I keep coming back is to hear you ramble on about life and everything. You are a good motivational speaker 😊
Do I ramble to much?
@@englishwoodsman Not at all! It is quite refreshing. You aren’t afraid of being honest and getting a bit personal, which I think sets you apart from many of the other content providers out there. Please keep up the good work 👍🏻
@@ptcarlsten Agreed... Rambling not in the sense of rambling as it we usually regard it, its commentary and description pertinent to the activity on screen.. Awesome!!!
No. I'm a Derbyshire transplant to the US and I still use most of the phrases, expressions and slang. My kids and my grandchildren understand me, in fact they've watched some of your videos with me. You bring back the UK to me.
@englishwoodsman
Noooooooooooo Dan you don't go on, your videos are lovely and very enjoyable. Thank you Dan, once again.
Love the new/Old logo Dan 👍
Back to basics 😊
I think it worked out fine, you had a good time. Thats a successful adventure.
Hey Dan don’t put yourself down on this video because as always you did try something different and made it interesting. I loved it as always . ATB Gail from Worcester Massachusetts 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤❤❤❤❤🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Memories of building dens down in the woods by the railway tracks when I was a kid. Great video.
Nice to see you again today Dan. Love the videos, keep up the good work Pal.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It was so calming and down to earth. It's just all about sitting back and enjoying nature and the rain. I love it, keep up the videos! ❤❤
love watching your channels Dan, you bring a lot of light hearted humur to your channel that lifts my mood so to whoever thought they were hurting your channel bring it on because all you are doing is helping the channel to grow👍
Love the sound of the rain and wind, the best ones. Be nice if u had a dog as a companion x
I’m from Alabama in the US and I love watching your videos.
Thank you for watching
I love your videos! You do a great job, you present yourself well. As a grandma with no outdoors experience, I probably won't be sleeping out from choice, but if I ever have to do so, I'll have learned how from your CZcams channel.
Really enjoyed this video. It looked fun! Looking forward to seeing you out again soon
Great video Dan! Like that you improvised with the tarp!
Ignore the haters. I was subscriber when you had less than 10. I went away came back a while later and you’ve grown as a person, adventurer from your early days. You keep doing what you’re doing
I love seeing the area where you are I have English Blood in Me on my Dad's side and a lot of Swedish Blood on my Mom's😂 side of the Family. Both families are from those places I mentioned Sweden and on my dad's side Wells. from way back in the 1800s when our families joined the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints. A lot of people call us Mormons the missionaries from the church converted us and brought us back to the United States I think it's exciting to watch you in your adventures.
Hi Dan I do like this kind of video much better great video Dan I have nothing but praise for your channel Dan
Hi Dan, if you wrap that rope around that tree again bud, when the tree grows, it will grow around the rope and hurt the tree😢. Great camp though, I enjoyed watching as usual 😊. Thank you for bringing us along too.
Great video again Dan. Good to see you try things like this. Speak soon and looking forward to the next one
I have some great ideas for this channel this year mate
Mrs Browns Boys surely spoilt your evening….
I really like your channel, straight forward, thankyou
👍👍👍
Well done Dan another fun video
Great video once again
Big 👍🏻 watching from Arkansas 👍🏻💛🙏🏻
Nice video Dan!! I loved the simplistic Camp.
Great vid mate. Just needed the canopy a bit lower to the ground, I think. These are the best uploads as they show you doing stuff no one generally does or trys. Keep going mate. Your continuing subscription numbers say it's going in the right direction for you.
I prefer these types of videos, tarps are always a winner.
I like tarp and bivvi camping but tents are my first choice
I like everyone here telling you not to poke a hole in your disposable plastic sheeting, lol. Like, that was not the point of the video! Hahaha. You do you, Dan. 👍
We all have our own ways 😂😂
im binge watching u fren and its better than tv
Happy like a pig in mood. I love it
Love your random thoughts 😂 you remind me so much of me lol. Love your videos x
I can't stop thinking my mind always runs wild 😜
@@englishwoodsman It perfectly matches your activities... very good and unique formula.....
You should off use few more off them sheets and put them together so you have more space to move about in good job and keep up the good work
Well done for doing that mate.
That was a very muddy camp. Good to see something a bit different and great to use a sheet that was only meant to cover a metal sheet. Using the rope already there was a good thing too. A couple of people have already said a pebble or acorn tucked into the tarp and the paracord wrapped around it.
Great when you can find them but a sharp stone will tear through in a wind. Buttons particularly a large coat button would work put into the corner of the tarp as if it is in a fist and the para cord. Maybe you could have another go with the improv. tarp and use it another way.
It looked a bit narrow to keep out rain even with a light breeze. Some people have no respect for the land or other peoples property shame on them.
Wow thank you for your comment
Another great video. X
Yessssssss mate👍👍👍👊👊👊
We enjoyed the video. Suggestion, at some point in the future try this again with a bit bigger tarp. And instead of a peak in the center, try an 'L' shape. The longer part of the L of the tarp going from the rope to the ground, slanted away from your back. The shorter part of the 'L' like a canopy over your head and staked out from the corners. As long as tarp is at least as long as your height, then it should cover you well. The length of the tarp to make the L shape should be much longer as the L shape will be your shelter. The longer it is the more shelter you create. You did good. If you are having to bug out and that tarp is all you had, you proved it would make a shelter. It's just it would be a small shelter.
Hi again Dan. I have had the same problem with butane gas cans. Some of them, not all of them though, leave gas at the bottom and I can never get it out. I think warming them a little, helps.
Brilliant video as usual. Thx for the update on Dan. Ignore the haters. Ive just got a Geertop bivvy to try.
I love your videos mate! Greetings from Australia 😎
Hello pal, love watching your video. I am doing a sleep out for a charity for the homeless in Cambridgeshire on the 1st March and wondering if I could borrow a decent sleeping Matt and sleeping bag for the night? All in the good cause of raising money for this charity but I don’t have my gear for the night
Hundred thousand plus onward and forwards Dan one simple way just be yourself, great to watch
Your racing against the elements like the rain and your racing against time too dan good question you asked that’s my answer
Bloody El Dan, you must have been freezing filthy and hungry doing that video. Don’t make ya self ill for us that watch your channel. Your a great lad with a great sense of humour, so funny☺️
Just found your channel ,and like the fact that you are using stuff to make camp and making it work. Thats what its about for me not loads of cost before you camp, its more fun using old gear and getting a use from it anyway. Hope you get more subscribers.
Im so scared to go on my own. Im 31 5ft 6 in baby faced and that terrifies me.😂😂... how can i face my fear best vids on CZcams. Happy camping 🥾🥾
Thanx for the video mate, keep them coming, cheers. 8-)
Great video Dan. There will always be miserable people who want to spread their misery on others. I've been a follower for a long time and am always impressed on your commitment to keep making videos. All the best mate 🙂🏕️👍
👍👍⛺️⛺️👍👍
We love watching your videos.keep them coming.your a sound down to earth bloke.getting close to nature is good for the mind and mental health.keep doing what your doing.love them.👍
So things got a little bit wet and dirty by morning. Thing is you enjoyed yourself Dan, and we enjoyed watching you. Thanks mate for your videos.
100% enjoyed myself mate
Don't no how anyone cud slag u off mate yr channels are brilliant always quality content 👌
Love watching your channel Dan because although you might not realise, you pass on lots of useful tips and info during your "ramblings" 😉 I know which facebook group those comments were on, I saw them too and had a chuckle 😂 Love the improvisation with your blue tarp and the rope you found. My first solo wild camp was just me, my dog, a 3x3m tarp and food/drinks. I just kept my clothes on, wore decent waterproofs and lay on the tarp on the ground with 3/4 of it wrapped over me & my dog. It did rain a bit overnight but I was dry & warm wrapped up in my tarp cocoon 😆 Length of daylight is determined by the earth's position in relation to it's orbit around the sun 😉 Keep up the great videos Dan.
Well I think I came better off from the group lots of new subscribers
Hi Dan mates, honestly, don’t listen anyone who’s bad mouthing it’s only jealousy, keep smashing out these videos. You’ll always get that one numb vegetable everywhere you go. At the workplace, at the footie, down the pub, online …. There’s always one knobber in every scenario. Just brush it off like you just did in this video
Nice video mate, tarps have to be just so and can be awkward when you first try them.
Thank you for watching
Tent looks better than the rooms you paid for in Blackpool
Don't ever stop what you are doing or the way you do it. YOU ARE BRILLIANT
Something does seem different, sure you are OK?
Also sad Scott has given up but I do understand.
I'm OK 100%
Phone was adequate - Not the best, but it did the job. So it is a reliable back-up.
Did loads of random junk-tarp/junk shelter type camps as a teenager...some went well, others were absolute disasters...I enjoyed them all!
keep up the good work lad! always good content atb
Nice one, keep having fun mate 🙂
Weather is just the elements, time is of the essences, you are in fact racing against time to beat the elements
How ya Dan. Think I saw a video of you with a Kelly kettle one time. No gas or igniter issues with the KK. Yeah, I know, a bit bulky but they're an amazing piece of kit. Kettle, stove, mini fire pit, grill.. you can do so much with it. I have all the gas gadgets but I'll have my Kelly Kettle over them any day if the trip allows 😁
Class as per mate
Hi Dan another great video it's a shame you didn't use an extra 2 guy outs in the middle of the tarp this would have stopped the rain getting in.
Think it would be worth another go
I like the scary videos too
Love the vids wish I could have the time to get out…..and be that person
Don’t know about the neg attention you got recently brother, love your channel and the content you provide. Keep it up mate! ⛺️👍💪❤️
That's a great idea Dan just shows what you can do with a piece of plastic sheet .
Yep 100%
I have the same OEX jetboil clone its great but i have the same issues with the igniter its a bit of a nightmare so i always carry a lighter for it, only just started watching your channel and im glad ive found it, ive only just started camping myself fairly new to it, a lot of useful information, keep up the good work.
All ok around for tarpshark clips you can put a line anywhere you want or join tarps together you will come up with a lot of things when you get some
👍👍👍💪💪💪😊😊😊
Audio differences are minimal. We like to see things that fail as well as those that succeed. Get wild camping in abandoned buildings scary places 👍🏻
I think you are wrong Mate ! I think it was an amazing idea using that sheet of plastic sheet👍 maybe a bit lower but great idea.
Dan, dan. The boss said can your make sure you dont put any wholes in that sheet we lent you? Woops
Im glad to hear you got all them extra subs, way to go.
Dan are you not doing any more camping food reviews?
I think I might have used the tarp the other way short side over the rope. This could have given you a bit of a ground sheet. Still loved the vid. As I watch, we have a thunder storm .Viewing from Sydney NSW.
Mora knife👍
