I just met Forrest last night at a jam session in Tulsa. I didn't know anything about Crooked X, but I could tell he was a very talented young man. Now I know what he meant when he described himself as the world's youngest washed up rock star LOL. One of the great things about music is even though I am old enough to be his grandfather, we had a great conversation about guitar playing. Many musicians I have known that got a lot of attention at a young age turned out to be really messed up adults, but Forrest is a real level headed guy.
I still can't believe how young these guess we're at the time of the recording!!!! Truly awesome talent, I think the drummer was only nine or something, the vocalist was like 15.. He sounds like James hetfield
This is a perfect illustration of their talent. If you can produce a performance this young, then I think it is a great demonstration of their level of maturity and class!
@all you haters! STOP HATING! give em a break. They're like goddamn 16 years old. saying they had no right to make this song is like saying that the person who invented macaroni & cheese had no right because he didnt invent macaroni or cheese. how is this any different from a band covering someone elses song? its not. They took part of other equally good songs and made there own version of it.. so stop whining
I'm sure the bands that they took inspiration from would be happy about it, especially iron maiden. They'd be happy to see youngsters keeping heavy metal going and that they took inspiration from them. And tbh, they even took the wasted years out on cd version.
I always cry when I hear this song, the intro is just so powerful, it's unreal. I love this song, it's always the first song I play on RockBand. I would like to thank Harmonix, for including this fantastic song in their game, and I'd like to thank the members of Crooked X for making such a beauty of a song!
Dude, they are young and making what they like, obviously they listen to all those bands and they want to play like them and it sound fucking good. Let them be.
@@pennysquires03 I wouldn't say STOLE it. They were inspired by all the big metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth, and, of course, Iron Maiden. I think they were just wanting to pay a tribute to them by slowing down Wasted Year's intro riff and recording in Nightmare. That's just my theory, anyway.
Personally I feel like the only reason they became semi-famous was because they were so damn young and came across the right people... because to be honest, their music is very basic and not all that appealing. I don't think they sucked, but there wasn't anything all that special about them other than the fact that the singer had a deep voice for his age.
Just asked chat gpt over and over again to help me figure out what the name of the band was again. I remember during that time I was really into learning how to play the song on guitar.
@4thwatcher777 Haha what about 3:27? That screams N.I.B by Black Sabbath as well as the part of that riff at 1:18. A part of Fade To Black by Metallica! This band is so original
@ATXDrummer92 I agree. Everybody needs to make their way. Besides, the so called -riff- they took turned out sick. If the dude that came up with the riff got the chance I'm sure he'd even praise this song. It TURNED OUT GREAT!
just imagine it as a casual cook trying to do a Chef's recipe. It's simliar but never quite the same. I'm actually glad they get inspired in cool bands, it honors them :D
So today, I misheard jackhammers for gunshots, a plane flying really goddamn low for a bomb falling, and my mom drove me to my aunts place going 80 miles an hour on a mountain highway. SCARIEST EASTER EVER.
well they might be 16 now, but look at the picture of the vid, THAT'S THEM. Short one on the left is the drummer, blonde is the singer, and the other two are guitarists (singer plays guitar too, not sure who's got what, though.)
Does anybody know these guys from BEFORE rock band? They were on MTV For a mini-documentary where they announced one of their songs would be on rock band.
Yeah it maybe similar to a lot of other metal songs, but compared to the screamo alternative mixed bands at my highschool, I would rather take this ANY DAY.
@Supernovagirl69 YOU FINNALY GOT IT!!!! You just acheived something hardly anyone ever does, a unbiased personality. I have to say, your the only person to ever actualy pass my test. I'm just some dude who puts randm comments on random videos, seeing what people reactions are to my diffrent personas (i.e me acting like a knowitall) And you on the other hand did'nt do what most people would have, flamed. It feels good knowing that the internet isn't completly void of smart people anymore.
they paid a great ode to the greats that they obviously love, cut them a break. Metallica for one would tell you they tried their best to imitate scorpion so? STFU these kids are metal and i love em.
Snare drum just has the snare turned off. Same as the Metallica's St Anger snare drum sound. Has more ring to it without the snare. Still a great song for their age
@ATXDrummer92 I agree with you man....besides who is to say that the begining riff isn't to pay tribute to Iron Maiden. I say for their ages this kids have great talent and potential.
I know that's what I posted the above. He said they sounded nothing like Iron Maiden, I said they usually don't, but at least on that riff he'd have to admit they did
The riff sounds NOTHING like Iron Maiden's Wasted Years. And if it is, let's just be thankful that they're fans of Iron Maiden, and not some other group (Not naming names, but you know who you are *Wink*)
Dang, I remember when I first heard these guys playing Rockband all those years ago. I thought they were gonna be the next big thing.
Man I thought the same thing
GrantH I still play rock band on ps2 and I'm 13 I love this song
Did you ever play Gone? Such a tune
So much potential 🥺
Late to the party but 100%
Holy shit,I didn't know these guys were 14-16 when this came out. Singer sounds older.
he does though
Welp they’re their in 30s and sadly the guitarist Jesse passed away
Ive always loved this song. I was maybe 13 or 14 when I heard it on Rock Band. The sound they have reminds me of Overkill.
One of the greatest snares I have ever heard. It is just the Trashy sound it has that makes it great!

WorldWarThree forest was my neighbor when I was a kid he gave my sister guitar lessons
I'm a guitar player myself and would love some tips
This shit SLAPPED years ago
Still slaps years later bro
Loved these guys back in rb days. Learned this one on guitar and everything. Gonna have to relearn this one!
That snare tho. Love it
Wish they hadn't broke up. So fucking good for how young they were when this was written/recorded. 13-14yr Olds are on this track. Let that sink in.
The drummer was 9!!!
@@dekinny6035 DAMN!
Holy shit they unironically used the St. Anger snare
*and they managed to make it work.*
This was before st Anger pretty sure....
i have never even heard of this band BUT so far i think they are really good. This is my fav. song by them!
I first saw crooked x at the fall festival.. knew they had talent right away
Helmet and crooked x are the most underrated groove metal bands of all time man. They rock the fuck out of the place.
I just played this song on Rock Band. it's amazing!
I still can't believe how young these guess we're at the time of the recording!!!! Truly awesome talent, I think the drummer was only nine or something, the vocalist was like 15.. He sounds like James hetfield
It's called voice changer lol even my younger friend sounded deeper at age 5 and he wasn't even 6ft that time lol.
sick song! one of my favorite songs, and these are kids!!
i heard this band a few days ago and now its my fav band
This is a perfect illustration of their talent. If you can produce a performance this young, then I think it is a great demonstration of their level of maturity and class!
When this song came out, the singer was 17. That's crazy seeing as he sounds like a young James Hetfield!
the drummer looks like the "Young JB" from tenacious d
XD
Lol true. Totally doesn't fit in the band.
@@iggystardust9236 omg iggy is so jealous 🤣🤣🤣😀😀😀🥰🥰🥰
@@jeffreylebowski2291 Yo Lebowski did you ever get your rug back? It really tied the room together.
love playing that song on rock band =)
Why didn't they make it big?!? They are SUPER talented!
I love the druming in this song!
these guys are amazzzzinggg!
and they're so young. i wish i
was in a band. lol. i'd be a pretty
great drummer :)
Did you ever pick up drums?

bad ass song fun to play on rock band
No actually I partied in Tulsa ok when I was younger youtube recommended it... these guys rock my best friend had the same orthodontist as the drummer
I always cry when I hear this song, the intro is just so powerful, it's unreal. I love this song, it's always the first song I play on RockBand.
I would like to thank Harmonix, for including this fantastic song in their game, and I'd like to thank the members of Crooked X for making such a beauty of a song!
I remember playing it on Rock Band 1. It's kinda nostalgic, but... brrgghghgh
They were 14 in 2008 when they first came into the spotlight
this is such a good song!!
omg that is freakin amazin!!!!! Wow they have some talent!!!
Guys FYI Forrest left the band a long time ago.. Lol now he's in a new band. " reign in the unknown" look it up.
give these kids credit there young and have alot of talent
"Hey, nice riff!"
"Thanks, I thought of it when I was listening to Wasted Years."
Washington is Next! - Megadeth
You're welcome
Dude, they are young and making what they like, obviously they listen to all those bands and they want to play like them and it sound fucking good. Let them be.
Fuxxxxxxx yea I did this song on Rockband EXPERT bass guitar ....I remember the stage ....red, fire and it was lit as F**k!
considering they were 13-14 years old when they made this, they are pretty good.
Wasted Years by Iron Maiden?
down to the T just slowed down
@@pennysquires03 I wouldn't say STOLE it. They were inspired by all the big metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth, and, of course, Iron Maiden. I think they were just wanting to pay a tribute to them by slowing down Wasted Year's intro riff and recording in Nightmare.

sorry hyper moment;
glad that over :P
Sadly, I am older than these guys.... Yet I feel the need to play RB everytime I hear it or at least headbang xD
Just asked chat gpt over and over again to help me figure out what the name of the band was again. I remember during that time I was really into learning how to play the song on guitar.
Almost 2 decades later.. Killer.
I wish thell come back they were good
Awesome. What til I tell rintoo Crooked X - Nightmare
@4thwatcher777 Haha what about 3:27? That screams N.I.B by Black Sabbath as well as the part of that riff at 1:18. A part of Fade To Black by Metallica! This band is so original
at first i though that they were playing Maiden's Wasted Years.
I remember seeing them live at rock on the range haven't heard anything from them since
one of them passed from what I heard.
+Daniel Smith Jesse past away and they broke up I knew the band personally
Saw them open for Ted Nugent at The Ryman in Nashville, TN a few years ago. The drummer was great.
this song is da best rock song ever!
@ATXDrummer92 I agree. Everybody needs to make their way. Besides, the so called -riff- they took turned out sick. If the dude that came up with the riff got the chance I'm sure he'd even praise this song. It TURNED OUT GREAT!
RIP Jesse.
how'd he pass away?
From what I could find, it was brain inflammation. It's a damn shame.
+David “Soothsayer” Johansson it is... so much talent
Song: "I'm in a nightmare"
Me: My life is a nightmare :/
As your nightmare comes to life.
Yes
Ha GAAAAAYYYYYYY
just imagine it as a casual cook trying to do a Chef's recipe. It's simliar but never quite the same. I'm actually glad they get inspired in cool bands, it honors them :D
first time listening to this and the first thing i notice was the intro just like wasted years from maiden, other than that sounds awesome...
i digg this!
I really love the singer sounds like a young james hetfield, Corey Taylor fusion
This song has a lot of Metallica and Iron Maiden influence in it.
@Dragons1589 riffs are the parts. like the high notes in the intro is the intro riff. then when the song gets heavy thats the main riff. so on so on
Idk why but when I first heard this song I thought it was Metallica 😅
Same, listen to "another nail in the coffin" by them. HUGE get field vibes(and an "oh yeeeeeahhhh")😂
I like this o.o
Did this song for an airbands competition in grade 2, we came 2nd next to some kids doing an acdc song lmao, was fucken fun
So today, I misheard jackhammers for gunshots, a plane flying really goddamn low for a bomb falling, and my mom drove me to my aunts place going 80 miles an hour on a mountain highway.
SCARIEST EASTER EVER.
I'm here because the sound of that shitty snare drum came to haunt me in the middle of the night 13 years later lmfao.
I can hear the Metallica inspiration in their sound
that song woaw beautiful great
THE INTROOO SO UNDERRATED BRO
I don't remember why i obsessed over this song a few years ago
im remembering these songs from way back when and its ok i guess
Yeah it's not terrible, it's just not good. Like Ted Danzigs forehead being used as a wind breaker
zing haha
i love this song it kicks ass
well they might be 16 now, but look at the picture of the vid, THAT'S THEM. Short one on the left is the drummer, blonde is the singer, and the other two are guitarists (singer plays guitar too, not sure who's got what, though.)

0:38-0:58 sounds like the begining of iron maiden's Wasted years
@SgtEaglefort idk, people were complaining about how they "stole" riffs from maiden and metallica and shit like that
I know that's what I posted the above. He said they sounded nothing like Iron Maiden, I said they usually don't, but at least on that riff he'd have to admit they did
Yea drummer wearing Slipknot shirt! WHOOOAA!!
this is badass

Well, these kids are young. They may have ripped certain parts off, but it's still a good song! I really don't care for iron maiden though...
