    Not tryna be mean, but all the people saying “step one: have talent, or must me nice to have talent” Art is actually not talent. It is a skill that can be developed no matter how bad you are. Just how studying improves certain parts of your brain, drawing builds on the visual cortex

      Correct but geniuses and talented artists do exist. Some artists are just more natural at it than others, it’s just the way we’re wired.

      Thank you. I was gonna comment this too but you summed it up perfectly. I hate when people say i can't even draw a straight line. It must be nice to be talented and im like... no bish! I struggled to develop my skills. Its something anyone can do if they just put in the effort. Just like any other skills

      That’s actually the basic excuse of untalented people who just can’t do shit lol. Splash a piece of shit on a canvas and call it ‘aRt’ ans then claim that ‘aRt iS a fORm oF eXpreSsioN yoU doNt hAvE tO Be taLentEd’. If you’re not talented and make absolute shit then what’s the point lol? Honey, you have to be talented to make decent art. Period. Talent cannot be taught. You can learn how to draw or paint, but the painting of a naturally talented individual will never compare to the painting of an untalented and taught individual. It’s like singing, it’s either you have a pretty voice or you don’t. And if you don’t, just shut the fuck up, don’t sing like a shitbag and say ‘ itS bEAuTifUL iN itS owN wAy’. No, it’s just not. It’s crap.

      @MewSakura12 Před 4 lety +29

      CL what a crock of shit lmao
      There are plenty of amazing artists who will tell you they’re not talented, they just worked hard.
      What even is artistic talent anyway? Talented individuals still have to learn the foundations of art, the difference is they just pick it up faster.

    I remembered my first commission when i drew a storybook page by page for my best friend's little sister cause her mother asked me to, and it took me a week to finish and at the end i only received 200pesos,, i never really complained cause i really dont know how to price things since i was still in 6th grade at that time and it IS for my best friend's sister so yea, lesson learned dont do commissions on close friends cause they'll end up getting a discount.

    So when I was 14 I drew a fan art of captain America for my friend birthday....but then her aunt ask me to draw a picture of her daughter that live far away from her..then I do for fun and she paid for that...then when i was in the class enjoying my day with my sketchbook...there’s these guys said to me that he don’t believe that I drew the fan art then they make fun of my art that I decided to stop drawing...but after 2years when I was 17. I try to draw again ,honestly I kind of regretted the choice that chose..because if I don’t stop I will get improved and I can proof to them that I actually do better than before..Now I really struggle with my own arts 😊 I don’t know why I tell you this but it make me feel better to tell the story.. I will probably sound super dumb for asking this-
    So if I get commissioned for an artwork,i have to draw it
    But like, how do I give it to them?
    Do I email the picture for them? Or do I have to give them the physical print/picture
    I'm so new to this and I'm so confused
    I never thought about commissions or anything related to that

    I got your point with the pricing based on the final result since there are some people who will overprice their product even tho it's not really good or something. But pricing your product based on materials and time isn't actually 'unrealistic'? I mean, there are really good paints out there that are high prized but are good quality. Like, they have good color quality, it decay longer, etc. And time is gold. Some people are really busy and time is pretty valuable to them. Detailed pieces usually takes time and effort. Although pricing on time is kinda dubious to me since I don't really know how the client will be able to truly tell if the amount of time was true or not. But all in all, I think pricing them based on that is not unrealistic. That is all. I would like to explain more on material quality and things, but I got pretty lazy. ^^'
    Btw, very informative video. Pretty helpful.

But I already knew the deadline was way back last last week and that no one asked on how it went with ny work. Until now. Maybe because they already know me well. Somehow i find out that the way you thinking about to price arts, it's just the same as me! I totally agree what u said 7:30 . When i watched the other videos that talking about this, i was like "oh my god. Is this really the way they price their art? Literally like the all smallest thing on the process, you gotta include it all?" Even myself was creeped out to know this😂 cz i know at the end, people would just only care about the final product. Not the whole process. Unless for taxes, shipping, materials, printing. This 4 for me has to be counted after all. Seriously cz just before your video i watched, they include all the utilities, your groceries, times and other things that i personally think wasn't necessary. Honestly sis, now you make me a little bit comfortable and not in a guilty to price my arts.😂

  • @CurlyChristina1
    @CurlyChristina1 Před 4 lety +1

    The way I price (idk if this would help anyone) but I have a set price for the size canvas I’m working on, and I specialize in acrylic portraits, so for every extra headcount I double the set price. Ex. A 16x20 one person portrait would be $80 and if they want two people in it then it would be $160. I am still an amateur but I have gained some experience on painting compared to my first ever commissioned piece where I charged $15 for a 16x20
    So really once you’ve gained experience you’ll be able to adjust your pricing along your growth as an artist.

    Recognize, especially if you aren't financially independent, that your art is VALUABLE because nobody else in the whole world can make something exactly like you. Do not. undersell yourself, as it creates this idea that new artists don't make quality art, or that art isn't a valuable luxury item. It is! And art is important, and your time and craft deserves to be compensated for appropriately.
    I use the "hours, materials, effort" rubric as a starting point for pricing. I do this because materials and effort go into a painting, whether a client sees it or not, and my time is valuable. Sometimes, especially as a "novice" artist, you aren't very fast, so including hours in the pricing right away might make a piece an unrealistic price. If one portrait takes me 10 hours at the start of my commissions, and I want to get more than minimum wage (which is completely reasonable.) that could be $100-200 for the piece, even without materials included. I would price it lower because I know that it isn't necessarily the quality I would personally pay for a $200 painting. BUT, eventually with skill and time, you grow faster at making a better product and that isn't such an unrealistic price. Look at other artist's commission sheets! Find people you feel are in a similar boat to you and see what they do.

I personally just like people enjoying my art and it could be free but I know that that is not realistic. For some reason it's so hard to get out of that mindset of " you're charging too much lower the price."

    Thing is I actually do everything. I do realistic human portraits with pencils, colored pencils and oil paint. I also paint on my clothes and mirrors with acryl colors and I draw in a cartoon style with line art and sometimes colored pencils. As you said people don't like too much choice but idk what to promote then. Should I do an account for every type of art I do?

    Thank you for your advice about pricing art. As far as your university path. I recommend you getting into a field that gives you a license from your state after you graduate. So you can have a better chance of competing with everybody else for employment. 🤗♥️

    I found this video in June and I am now a 16 year old amateur artist I don't know if it's just me but my artworks are kinda different from others. I like unique art full of message rather than fan arts or common graphic arts that's why I don't know if people will love the artworks I've made.

    My 1st commission started with 200 php on 15x20 watercolor paper...then it went to 300...but I do my pricing depending on the size of my canvas, no matter how detailed it would be..so it would be less sometimes..now a days they dont pay me but they just buy me food and drinks like starbucks or bos or burgers and milkteas...
