Hey everyone! Feel free to share your thoughts on this topic. Let's have a civil discussion!
There are a few ways to optimize the situation:
    1. Hack college (scholarships, double down on credits, community college etc..) There are many ways to significantly decrease the total cost of college.
    2. Learn a trade or enter an apprenticeship (big money in some of these)
    3. Start a business
As I mentioned in the video, NOTHING is guaranteed. The #1 factor that will determine your probability of success is your willingness and motivation in life. If you enjoyed the video, don't forget to hit the like button to support the channel!
    Thanks,

I have to disagree with ur fundamental concept of someones gross income to start ur analysis. Because even though one is in debt and one has worked to earn money, the expenses of daily living often leave non-college graduates broke. Even though they made $148,000 in 4 years, they spent say, $200,000 to pay rent, insurance bills, loans, leasing agreements, etc. Their overall debt is lower, but their immediate expenses are spread over several unmanageable payments and often low employment potential. (Entry level unskilled labor offering $25,000-$40,000/yr)
Whereas the person who went to college might be in -$120,000 in debt, but having had most of their living expenses paid for in that loan, and may have worked during school to cut costs. they also have consolidated debt into a single manageable payment and given themselves high employment potential. (foundation level careers offering $50,000-$75,000/yr)
Today even tradesmen and vocational workers need certification that can take 2-4 of schooling. I'd say that's a grey area because it varies on schools and employers and demand etc.

I think the problem is parents paying for their kid’s way through college. People should pay and work for their own way through college. It’s a huge learning experience. The best thing for a parent to buy their children is a house if they graduate. It sounds cruel but it would make people think twice about paying for an art degree.

The world is getting around to realize that SKILLS and EDUCATION are two distinctly different things. Education gets you a piece of paper to hang on your wall. Skills, on the other hand, those put money into your pocket. If you spend 4, 5 or 8 years getting "book smart" but have no marketable skills when you graduate, you should have skipped college and just flipped burgers instead.

For example, my friend is studying to be an engineer and next semester, the school gave him an internship in a gold mine and last year, he had one in an pharmaceutical. company. Me, I started my study to be a teacher and I couldn't never had internships like that without my school.

Go to college if you have your mind dead set on your future. For example: if you want to be a doctor, lawyer, you know something big. Then you go to college because it’ll get you everything you need to get that job.
But if you’re into the arts or not sure what you want to to. If you want to travel... if it’s anything of that sort I think college isn’t worth it.
Plus, if you want to learn something real quick (FOR FREE) just do some research. It’s pretty friken easy.
Anyways, my opinion is that I wouldn’t go. But the problem is my parents and family. I feel like I’m letting them down. Over the years college got this label on it that people misuse.
“ if you don’t go to college you won’t be successful”
    That bs.
If you really want something and put your mind to it it’ll happen.
You don’t need college unless you know you’ll need it for the job position you want.

Of course it's not as good as my internships where I'm observing a teacher, but the classes gives me the knowledge to understand why a teacher does certain things.

Something you can do here in California get your first year in community college. Get your second year in community college for $600 and 20k for your other two years in a CSU. That’s $20,600 for a bachelors. That’s not including financial aid. If you family is in working class. You can easily get like 90% in aid. So you’d only pay like $3,000. People always want to go to the most expensive colleges and don’t want to go to community college. It’s a waste of money going to a 4 year college for your first 2 years.

Using averages for the argument is almost useless because there's so much a person can do in their life to change their situation. I think college is good depending for vast majority of people not just for the degree but also the networking, the non-academic skills, and broadening your perspective. On the flip side if someone had a plan laid out for after high school and they really are unsure of college then that's up to them. But college is a necessity to get into careers such as law, engineering, medicine, teaching, etc. Really depends on what your passion is and what you want.
You have to remember though that the job you have isn't the only way you'll make money in life. There's so many options to set oneself up for financial independence. Be it investing in ETFs, real estate, business, branding, etc. So at the end of the day don't let money be the driving force because if you really think hard enough you'll find ways to provide for yourself.

Companies are quicker to hire and promote people with college degrees, even in liberal arts. Some prefer liberal arts, because those classes train you in flexible thinking. It's not just job training. I majored in English and Humanities and did fine in library and publishing jobs. Other friends did the same and worked their way up in corporate and government jobs. If you get a degree that is specifically training you for one job, you're only qualified for that one job. And that's what happened to me - eventually I decided I wanted to teach, so I got a master's in teaching at the wrong time and couldn't get a job in it. I should have stayed doing what I was doing, because now I have the big debt. And it's not just me - my husband majored in biology and ended up working his way up with the state, while the people working with him initially were lab techs which meant they could only ever be lab techs. I say, get a degree that develops you as a person and gives you a lot of ways to jump.
And there's something else. We need liberal arts in our lives, apart from earnings. I have never regretted my BA for one single day of my life, while my "practical" Education degree I'd hand back right now if I could get that money back. I know so much better, more interesting things than just how to do a job. I never get bored. There are riches in my brain, which sounds goofy but I totally mean it. I went through a program where I learned to think, write, figure things out, know about the world and history and a little bit of everything, and I had professors to guide me and challenge me on any lazy thinking that came out. Some of it you can get from books, but a book author is going to give you their research and conclusions, not help you develop your own mind. That's what everybody needs. Is it worth $60K? If you can pay it, absolutely. But most people can't. It's getting harder and harder to get that kind of education, and our civilization is starting to show the cracks. If you can find it for less, or take a class at a time, do it.

Honestly... I know this video is almost two years old already so commenting is basically pointless, but I personally think it it worth it, but not for the reason that we're told. Unless you want to be a doctor or lawyer etc., a degree is not required but is a pretty good decision to make. I even think so regardless of major. You have people majoring in things like English or any other social science and still getting high paying jobs completely unrelated to their degree. I think you should get a degree because companies don't really care about your degree major or the degree itself. The reason companies have degree requirements behind jobs that have good salaries and benefits is because it saves the company time and money in weeding out the majority of applicants who they deem "unqualified", so they can find a good hire ASAP and only have to interview say 5 people instead of 100. The knowledge related to getting the degree is almost always not the knowledge used on the job--it's just a formality. The degree opens the opportunity to getting the job, but after that I think your experience and connections(most importantly) determine the fate of your career.

There def right when they say a degree doesn’t guarantee you a job or better pay tho. I just graduated with my bachelors but it was all free since my parents worked there and free tuition was one of there benefits. If I had to pay, it would have costed me over 90 grand. I def wouldn’t have went if I didn’t receive free tuition. If I hadn’t of gone, for me it would have been a waste. A diploma is a investment for some people. However, in many cases that value is not worth the dollar amount these instutuons place on it. For instance I was a college athlete and was on scholarship. In that case, or in any other scholarship based scenario I'd say it's worth a shot. However if you have to pay your way, or take out loans... Both are risks, the real thing is your passion and drive in the work place. More effort more money in most cases, but you also gotta know when to walk out the door while watching out that emotions don’t get the best of you in that scenario. The most important thing tho money might run the world but it doesn’t and shouldn’t run you (unless of course you have a family and have to provide) Find something that you at least have some passion about cause it will drive you to do better and being better and constantly getting better equals more wage money and then invest/save. Just don’t go get a job that makes you miserable it just sucks and the money is blah even when you get a lot of it I was there 60-70hr work week bringing home at least 1k a week right outta high school and it’s not worth it cause I had no time to do anything or spend it, haha. If you’re not sure try a trade it’s a few months to a year of training and is only a fraction of colleges cost and you can move up the ranks, but only do it if you can find one that interests you.

I went to a private Catholic college for 2 years but dropped out due to financial and mental health health issues.
After being institutionalized with bipolar disorder, I went to community college and graduated with a 4.0 GPA and an associate’s degree in accounting.
I transferred to a 4 year state school but had to drop out of college again due to my bipolar disorder.
After recovering for 2 years, I went to a different state school and graduated summa cum laude 5 years later with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Mathematics & Economics, a minor one Business Administration, and minimal debt due to numerous scholarship opportunities I was fortunate enough to receive.
I went to graduate school for a year but dropped out yet again due to mental health issues
Now, after a year of working as a self-employees freelancer, I’m at a different grad school and with luck and hard work, I should be graduating by the end of Dec 2020 with a master’s degree in Data Science.
While I understand that a college degree does not immediately assume that I will ultimately earn a high net worth, the thing that kept me going with my education is the fact that I genuinely value a college degree as a representation of dedicated and consistent academic achievement.
During my academic career, I consistently worked as a freelancer and an intern earning income while I attended school.
As of Aug 2020, my current net worth at age 31 is a little over $210,000 with over $180,000 of my savings currently invested in multiple IRAs, a solo 401K, and several taxable brokerage accounts.

I want to open a Robotics business, should I go to college? It would cost me about 40-50k for a Bachelors degree. It would be nice to learn about Robotics in college because well, it's a difficult field and I can't really get job experience in it unless I get a degree, but I could possibly learn on my own.

I'am sure someone has mentions this but, the bigest problem is that most employers won't hire you if you dont have that degree. Even if you have experience in that field of interest. Hopefully that status quo will change in the future.

I think it might be a good idea to include in the video the amount of interest you will be paying on those student loans, as well as the amount of money you could be making off of investing that extra $268k difference (even more when you factor in the interest on the -120k). For most people, just having this close to 300k invested in an index fund over the long term will more than make up for that gap difference in salary. If you invest 148k in S&P 500 at age 22, I think you are already set for a decent life

I think the issue is that when the fed government stepped in and secured student loans, it basically gave universities/Colleges a blank check that is guaranteed (school gets paid right off the back, and the government holds the note). A note by the way, that can’t be removed in bankruptcy court by the borrower, and gives the fed gov the ability to garner your wages. This in turn allowed schools to raise tuition, and at the same time, a whole crop of new school are opened to meet all of the new demand from students. Primary school also started pushing students towards a college edu vs learning a trade (Plummer, electrician, welder, ect...), which also helped to over saturate the job market with 4-YR degree holders, while creating a shortage in the above mentioned trade jobs.
To make a long answer short I would say NO. It would be a much better use of your time to work an apprenticeship and learn a trade. You would be earning money the entire time, and learn a skill/trade that is a little more insulated during down cycles in the economy. You would also be debt free. I’ve worked with Plummer’s who’ve made $500k+ in a year, and know people who fix garage doors for $30/hr.

I personally think it's different for everyone. I currently attend the University of Minnesota in a program specific for my future occupation. I feel you should kind of know what you want do before entering college. I've also found the networking to be extremely beneficial. The school I attend has extremely smart students. I've met some in the business program and engineer school who already have their own successful businesses going. My school also has connected me to businesses in Minneapolis who are already offering me positions to work. Overall, I feel as though college can help you succeed if you know what you want to do, but you can also succeed without a degree. There are too many factors and variables in play to really answer this question thoroughly.

I also attend the University of Minnesota and I chose this school mainly because of the network they have throughout the twin cities. There really are too many factors to take into consideration when answering this question, but I believe that if someone wants to get a college degree, they should also focus on networking while attending school. Working internships, doing research, or getting experience of some sort while in school can really be beneficial for finding a job after they graduate. I’m learning that now as I attend university. Many people struggle to find jobs straight out of college because of the lack of experience. I believe most universities offer some sort of opportunities for growth and students should really take advantage of them in order to get ahead.

Just depends on the field. The IT field degrees aren't as desirable from cooperations like certs are. I wouldn't say college is not worth it! Just depends what you're going for.
I've heard from IT specialist that s degree means nothing in the field, they want certs A+, Net+, Sec+, MCSA, & Cisco etc.
But if you're aiming to be a doctor or some other field that requires it then it pays off.

I want to be a nurse and to do that you need at least a 1-year tech college certificate for an LPN or you can get your RN for 2 years at a community college. RN's make more than LPN's. Or you could get a BSN and then specialize if that's what you want to do. For me I will be able to get military benefits to go towards my tuition as well as academic scholarships, there's one college I applied to that if I enroll, I could have all four years including room and board paid for when I graduate. So, it really depends on what you want to do. And nursing doesn't require 4 years in college for those who want to be RN's but don't want to graduate with $50,000 in debt or whatever the statistic is these days

then there's the issue of the same wage for 40 years, for both routes. But in my area, you can make over 90k as a journeyman union plumber. Multiplied by 40 and that's 3.7 mil. Now there's a career ladder and you can make more. The same is true for the college kid, who will probably make 40k starting off, and as they progress they will make more and more money.

Also, I don’t think that majors in natural sciences, social sciences, creative arts, and humanities are necessarily useless. Sure some majors higher ROI than others but it does not necessarily mean that you are doomed to failure if you are not those specific degrees.
