    Hi .. I have recently got this amp L20H and its very nice. Sadly many of the youtube reviews don't do it justice at all. I use PRS guitars and although humbucker pickups I tend to find the high input sounds better. The clean channel has good head room for R & B styles and when cranked gets bluesy. The drive channel is a lovely sound, I tend to run drive at 3 o clock and I get AC/DC, ZZ Top and classic rock tones. Its not a heavy metal amp, its a very nice amp for most genres and a great gigging amp. I play through a Zilla Fatbaby 112 cab loaded with Celestion M65 Creamback … So in summary this is a great amp. I also have the Marshall DSL20HR and that too is a great amp but the clean channel breaks up faster than the Laney. Footswitch comes with the Laney to switch reverb and channel and a nice amp cover too. Hope that helps choosing

    As a long term Marshall and others user I recently bought the 5 watt version as a home amp. It's opened my eyes - such a grown up sound. I now want to buy the 20 watt. And probably the 50 watt 😁

    I have had the L20H head and matching cab for 1.5 years and it has wonderful tone! Kind of big and heavy for 20 watts but due to the Class A operation I guess. This demo reminds me how good it is, maybe it is time to fire it up again and put my Kemper away for a while :-)

    Found the l20h used for 650$ and paired it with a 1x12 fender bassbreaker cab. The distortion sounds GREAT w the Celestion v type speaker and getting both for a little under 1000$ was an absolute steal. The laney head has lots of power and can cover pretty much any genre besides heavier metal. Can def do punk though. 10/10 recommend if you can find one! Only complaints are that the handle goes to shit pretty quick and kinda crumbles apart, and the reverb isn’t spring (still sounds really damn good though, almost cant tell that it’s digital).

      I found one at Guitar Center today for 550 used! and youre right about the handle, mines pretty beat up. but dont mind replacing it with something nicer. totally blown away by this thing.

    On my bucket list. Have the super cub head and it kicks ass but this head is the class "A" king of all low wattage tube amps. It's worth every penny and then some.

    A long overdue updated demo...thanks! I own this amp along with the matching cab, and it is more musical and balanced than any amp i've owned - goose bumps musical. Up until now, the online demos have not revealed this (especially the one you would expect would be a good representation). Verified - also great with pedals, plenty of headroom, yet plenty of gain if you need it - perhaps not "metal level", but everything up to that, even without a pedal. Underdog amp and unsung hero for sure that needs a go before you cave to the more "popular" choice.

      bill n Do you think the 5H would have enough clean headroom for rehearsals/small gigs or need the 20H?

    • @bniwa
      @bniwa Před 6 lety

      I tried the 5W combo out before buying the L20H. It's an awesome sounding amp as well and would probably work OK for a jazz trio, but it didn't have the headroom i needed for my band (loud, rock). That 15-20W range seems to be the minimum for us. Still, I want that 5W combo for my practice amp / studio app. There's some lunchbox alternatives out there that we've tried (HK 18) but the sound does not compare. I hope Laney decides to release a lunchbox version of the L20 (PLEASE?)

      @rdb9936 Před 6 lety

      bill n Thanks for the reply! Does the 20W sound as good as the 5W at low volumes or do you think you really need the 5W for home use and the 20W for rehearsals/gigs?

    • @bniwa
      @bniwa Před 6 lety +1

      It still sounds incredibly warm and musical, although at bedroom levels you cant really take advantage of the L20's power tube saturation, which sounds pretty nice cranked up. As a compromise, I'm running a Hudson Broadcast into the clean channel, pedal drive about half way - I've always had good luck running this fuzz (vs an OD) at low levels to help emulate what I can't get playing quietly from the power section. It breaks up much differently than the dirty channel and simply sounds more "driven" vs a distorted preamp section.

    • @bniwa
      @bniwa Před 6 lety +1

      I should add the fuzz is on the low gain setting.

    What's the settings of tone used in a backing track soloing? Is it a last settings which shown before backing track? No pedals used..? I can't get such tone with my humbuckers, maybe these are active humbuckers? Clean tone of this amp is just astonishing.

    Is this head a fully analogue amp, as the reverb being analogue as well? My current head has a built-in digital reverb but want to find an amp which is 100% ”pure”. :)

  • @JammyGit

    Hi Laney, could you explain the difference between the 2 inputs on this amp please?
    To be honest I've had the 5 watt head for over a year (and a great amp it is too) and I've used both inputs at different times and they both sound the same to me.
    All the demos I've seen have ignored them, there's no explanation or comparison of the 2 inputs so I may as well find out from the makers of the amp what the crack is with the Hi & Lo inputs.
    ** Edit, when I say inputs I mean the Hi & Lo on the front of the amp and not the 5w - 0.5w inputs (outputs) on the back.... Sounds a bit confusing sorry, I just realised after posting that, it could've been misunderstood, anyway, cheers. **

    • @LaneyAmplification
      @LaneyAmplification  Před 6 lety +4

      Hello!
      HI INPUT: ‘Hi’ stands for high gain. This input is designed for the connection of low output level guitars making it well suited for guitars with single coiled or low gain humbucker type pickups. Use of high gain pickups in this input may drive the preamp too hard causing a "mushy" sound. Only use good quality guitar cable.
      LO INPUT: ‘Lo’ stands for low gain. This input is attenuated down approximately 50% from the Hi input and is designed for high output level guitars. It is useful in obtaining output that is "tight" not "mushy" from high gain humbucker type pickups. Also use this input for the cleanest full range sound with extended low end response. Only use good quality guitar cable.

    • @LaneyAmplification
      @LaneyAmplification  Před 6 lety +2

      Hi there! (Lee here) the high and low inputs are for use with different powered pickups, so...if you had a set of high powered active pickups in your guitar you'd use the high input, if you had a standard output passive set, then you'd use the low input. Although I guess you could do whatever suited your ears. Hope that helps? :)

    • @JammyGit
      @JammyGit Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for your quick response Lee 👍
      I thought it was funny that I've had the amp for a year and didn't know about this.....but as you rightly say, it doesn't do any harm to experiment. I know that I'll be more aware of it from now on and not much is set in stone regarding the 'correct way' of using gear, well, within reason, I mean it might sound great if you were to stick your tongue inside the electrics of the amp mid solo but I think I'll pass on that tone tip if you know what I mean.....anyway cheers.

      Hi Laney, is the 5W headloud enough for rehearsals/small gigs or would it not have enough headroom, making the 20W a better choice?

    • @martinadams7979
      @martinadams7979 Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Lee, its the other way round, low input on amp for high output PU and high input on amp for low powered PU... great playing by the way, always enjoyed your reviews and demos … funny thig is I play the PRS with HB in the high input by choice as it sounds better to my ears, more grunt on the drive channel, still clean on the clean channel

    “Let’s do something musical then and use a range of tones to create the track.”
    Proceeds to engage is high gain wankage for a minute and a half. No clean tones.
