    I tried a bottle of the Jack Daniels bonded Rye a few months ago. I didn't care for it. Went to my local Total Wine a few days ago and found this single barrel, barrel proof rye for $65.00. It had NEVER been available before. I decided to try it. It was bottled in May 2024. got it home and tried it. I found it just as good as you described. Very good! I may have gotten the last bottle on the shelf. A few days passed and I was at the same Total Wine store looking for something else. They had one last bottle of this Rye on the shelf. It was from the same barrel as the one I bought a few days ago. I bought it. I'm very pleased with this barrel of Rye. At 136º, I don't get the ethanol burn. Very smooth and full of flavor as you described. I tried a bottle of the Jack Daniels single barrel, barrel proof Bourbon a year or so ago. I prefer this Rye to the Barrel proof Bourbon.

    I grabbed a bottle for 65. Bottled April 2024 at 135.7 proof. Fresh crack this evening. Sweetness and a little of that rye note (mint is what I got). First sip..sweetness is in full effect at front palate. Mid palate gets hit with the spice and a bit of dryness from the proof. Goes down very smooth with just a faint Kentucky hug. Long finish..quite enjoyable. After 20 minutes in the glass, it's earthy candy in a glass...like brown butter brittle..just a faint touch of that mint/rye note which is a nice contrast. No more dryness mid palate..just silky smooth. Does not drink like its 135 proof.
    This expression could change the mind of anyone who says they don't enjoy rye. My tip..take a couple of sips and then let it open up for 20 minutes and come back to it. You'll be pleasantly surprised how it keeps giving you something different. .

    Grabbed a bottle for $65.99 (In Kentucky) at 136.8 proof, and I tried it on my local's recommendation. He knows I'm not a rye guy, I actually hate rye most of the time; But this stuff Jack is putting out is incredible. It's got some FIRE to it, but I let it breathe for around ten minutes sitting neat in a glass with two small ice cubes. Totally unleashed the flavor and man, I can't get enough. I really hope we start seeing it more commonly around the country. Everybody should try this at least once.

    They must be sending all the good JDBP Rye out west, lol. Every one I've tasted so far has some combination of banana, ethanol, varnish or burnt sugar notes, alongside the pleasant notes you mentioned in your review. Even the 94 proof JD SiB Rye has a small bit of astringency. I will say I like JDBP Rye on the whole, and I feel like its price and flavor profile match pretty well. But none I've tasted have matched the 2020 LE JD Rye release. I think JD would of been better doing a batch barrel proof Rye product to have more consistency. The bonded rye is a testament to that.
    Otherwise, would be cool to see you do a JD flight fight at some point.

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Yes, they should do batches with age statements & save SiB for picks only..
      Also, JD says the 1st release of the Bonded Rye is 7yr, so wonder if a lot of the Brl Prf rye are also near the 7yr age, or at least 4.

  • @dougpetty3417
    @dougpetty3417 Před 3 měsíci +2

    Peter great review. I agree with your evaluation. The single barrel releases are generally fantastic. Understanding the single barrel means you can and will find variability. I can drive an hour and a half and be at the distillery. Its nice to see the coy hill and newer rye releases. Jack is making a strong push to keep up with the KY boys.

    In response to the age question you asked;
    From what I understand w the TTB rules/laws, All "whiskey" aged less than 4yrs Must have an age statement. Though, it has only been enforced on bottles labelled as "Straight" whiskey, particularly straight bourbon.
    That is why JD resisted being labeled a bourbon or being forced to label it as "straight" even though it is, because they did not want to put the 2yr age on the old no 7 bottles.
    That is when they mainly or only made the Old no 7 from 90P, to currently 80P. That whiskey is aged ~2 yrs & IF they were forced to call it "straight" or a "bourbon" they would have to put the 2yr age on the labels, which they know would be a killer for sales.
    While these SiB ryes could be 4-7yr now, in a cpl yrs or less (depending on sales) they could be 2yrs w/o notice.
    It seems that many of the current JD Brl Prf shelf bottles are under 4 yrs, based of taste, color, especially when compared to the Rye.. I poured a 2024 Brl Prf Rye & 2024 Brl Prf TN whiskey into 50mL bottles (same type) & was amazed how much visibly darker the rye was, when looking through that small amount of whiskey. The rye was 3.3P higher, which is not enough to make that much of a difference or any, being that both have No water added after being barreled.

    Hi Peter! In my whiskey journey I put JD on the back burner too long (thinking of the old JD & coke variety). I have to tell you, I not only love the rye version, but bought their whiskey SBBP (more than one) and love them. I was very surprised how similar they were in taste and smell. They've done a great job of keeping the profiles close, even though they're single barrels. I enjoy reviews like this one... as all single barrels are different and seeing you have the same experience as I did (mine was only 127.3) keeps me wanting to buy them without too much worry of the barrel I may get.

    Thank you for the review! I have not had JD SB BP Rye yet. But I am now surprised as the mash bill is relatively high Rye and does not contain a whole lot of corn, yet still carried a lot of sweetness. I am wondering where this came from, maybe from the charred oak? Now I am very curious to see how it compares with a low-Rye bottle, such as the Russelle's Reserve Single Barrel Rye or Pikesville Rye. Thanks again and I like this new series/reviews!

    In NY I get a wide choice of 100% craft ryes. And at cask strength there's usually more sweetness than spice. The special edition SBBP of 2020 blows them all away. I was collecting ECBP and store pick bourbons but a good sweet rye is my domestic jam. I thrill with the risk that it might be minty and sharp and flop for me.
    Some of the JD age stated releases are probably pretty good but the prices by me are a little crazy. I am always looking for 1 of these regular SBBP at retail and yet to spot one. Cause I need another bottle of barrel proof rye, hahaha

      @@whiskeyisajourney I figure if these new standard releases are 85% of that first one then they are certainly worth keeping on the shelf for $70-75.
      I'm just looking at the 10 year old for $195, the 13 year old for $330 and the 100 proof Heritage release for $245 that are out of my range. The new $50 bottle might make good content. I'm not curious enough to buy them myself.
      I might do $100 for the single malt if I see it again

    I wonder if the same would be said of the lower proof JD SB BP Rye. In my area these go for $67 before tax but we never get the higher proof ones. The selectors of the single barrels in our area always pick 127 to 129 proof.

    • @whiskeyisajourney

    Thank you for another great review. I've had only the regular single barrel rye, and with that one I have mixed relationships. On the nose it's great, in the finish it's relatively long and lovely, but in the mid palate it feels little thin and alcoholic. What are your thoughts on that one?

    Also not a rye fan (scotch, bourbon/Irish in that order). I enjoy Lost Monarch bourye. I also like the Balcones Rye. Also not a traditional rye and very much a breakfast type. I did like Sazerac for the money but it’s supposed to be a low-rye rye.
    I have such a strong dislike of JD old no 7, that I’ve generally avoided their products. I did have a chance to try a mini of the Single Barrel Select. Better than the 7 but not good enough to impel me to investigate further. I do keep hearing that this product and the single Barrel Select Barrel Proof are a “absolutely” worth a try.

    As my palate has matured, JD SBBP rye and bourbon have become less interesting. Actually they are pretty good values and both taste rather powerful but for me it's the note I get from the sugar maple charcoal mellowing process that I find not appealing. Funny that I also notice this same note in Old Forester 1920 so the JDs and OF are all on the skip list.
