The GG1's are true double ended locomotives, however in the United States all locomotives must have a designated front end which is a capital F on the lower front sides. If your GG1 does not have these F's you can tell which end is the front by looking at the roof, there are two steel plates, one of which has a vent from the Steam boiler that is used to heat the passenger cars, that vent is located towards the Front of the Locomotive.
