- The new LEGO Ideas 21346 Family Tree is a cute set with a very niche audience, I think.
Am I the only one though? Check my thoughts on my LEGO Review of the set.

Thank you LEGO for sending this set for review. Views and opinions are my own.

A family tree full of Tiago's passport photos made me laugh more than I expected.
was going to say that Tiago's genes are strong and his whole family looks like him :)
Reminds me a bit of those slightly cheesy sci-fi series where the main characters ancestors look exactly like them because they are played by the same actor.
The CZcams Clone Wars have begun.
I wanna get this set just to display it exactly that way, with Tiago's face x10 lol
He looks so serious lol
Personally, the LEGO ideas sets I liked the most were the ones themed around actual objects, like the piano, the globe or the typewriter.
Agreed! Don't forget the Ship in a Bottle... 👀👀👀
Of course not.@@TiagoCatarino
@@TiagoCatarino I love it too, but when I got into lego it was already too late to get it🥲
@@TiagoCatarinobut the ship in a bottle was missing an octopus - I mean Kraken - so I had to borrow that from my son...

I love how real his reviews are. He provides the input needed for a terrific review and also gives his own input and feelings around the set but not diminishing the product as a whole.
I appreciate how he frames everything as “in my opinion” without insisting that the viewer feel the same way, and readily admits when he’s not the target market for a set. There’s nothing wrong with having a bias when you’re as open about it as they are here. It’s so easy to chase views with rage-bait, it’s refreshing to have a channel this ethical and fair.
i really hope that you will display this piece exactly as it shows at 2:40 with no changes. what a beautiful work of art you have made
Pretty cute, but a bit of a weird choice.
really looks embarassing for a company like lego
@@alvinhaglund5811 embarrassing?? how so??
its not cute at all. the colors are actively at war with each other.
Props to Tiago for posting often and taking care of his family at the same time much appreciated Tiago!
Instead of storage underneath, they should've used a mechanism that rotates the tree. It could have the option to be motorized too.
"our family" on a black background kinda looks like an epitaph
I feel like this is a set that really justifies some mechanical rotation. Just to easily see all the photos
I will also only have photos of Tiago in my copy of this set.
I love that theres no text at all in the thumbnail, just Tiago's baffled and possibly scared expression looking at a Lego tree
I actually just want this one for the tree itself. I think it will look pretty good in my forest. The base and side builds will just get parted out. I imagine many people buying it will do the same. I don't think many will use it as intended, rather it will be a parts pack.
That photo holder piece was in a Dots polybag that had an animal head you could customize
I think the set looks awesome, but honestly I love the idea of this more than execution. I also feel like once you get quite a few pics on here its going to block a lot of the details. as always great video Tiago!
Not really a family tree, more of a display for family photos
ah Tiago has a beautiful family!
your faces in the thumbnail crack me up so much
Thanks for this review. Was looking forward to your take on this set, thinking of getting it to go with the A frame cabin set.
I feel this was a pretty good idea as a MOC, but doesn't really work as a Lego set. After all, family is rather personal, so this set just begs to be heavily customized. And the pieces that come with it don't really help either. Also while those photo clips are interesting, I liked the original design using window frames a lot more.
Someone on Brickset suggested that it would have been cool if the set had included vouchers you could use to order a bunch of custom minifigs that resemble your own family, though that would obviously be quite the logistical challenge. But how about an AI-app to Legofy pictures of your family, which you could print and put in the tree?
But as it is, it's just a very weird set I just don't really understand.
A neat build. Though, the BYOM (bring your own minifigure) feels a tad cheeky 😂
2:45 Those pics at the back are for the family members you don't speak to.
I like the style of the tree, feels like a painted tree in 3D
Nice parts set to grab on clearance. Lots of interesting coloured leaves.
I love how you decorated it with the same lifeless picture of yourslef
To be fair this was a contest winner, not a set selected through the regular Ideas process
no offense but what were the other builds like if this is the one that won. shouldve at least gotten a color swap.
looks amazing great review 👍
100% agree about the color palette. It's garish. Something to note is the original Ideas submission was toned down a bit and looked better. Lego continues its track record of making good Ideas a little worse.
now ur making more videos per week love that beo keep it up
I would have liked to see some options to display elements on mini fig pics.
"I'm not the target audience for that product" Now that's some smooth way of talking !😄
Being respectful never did anyone any harm!
@@TiagoCatarinoYou are a gentleman and a scholar !
The colour choice of the base is more or less the colorpallete of the mystery machine van from Scooby Doo.
I love all the Tiagos!
I agree, a bit of an interesting direction that Ideas is going to.
The colour scheme of the base vaguely gives me a Scooby Doo vibe, as it's similar or matching the colour scheme of their Mystery Machine.
This looks nice, but it's just not that appealing for me personally and the amount of extra filler pieces hurts this quite a bit. The biggest issue is its price, which is actually relatively fine, but in the UK, its £80 price is sandwiched exactly between the £70 Auspicious Dragon and £90 Family Reunion sets, the latter of which is also family oriented, albeit for a different reason. And both are very pretty sets with even more prescence to them, even if they're going for different target audiences.
would have been nicer with a spinning mechanism to rotate the tree. and as you said the colour are not a good match
The stacked plates under the tree look random. As you say, seems a high price for a tree you could probably put the fundamentals together using parts from a pab wall!
You found the blue pins distracting? I've made that mistake before...
I kid. Great review, love the presentation and pace of it!
I wish they would make some beautiful photo frames. More things to hang on the wall please! We are running out of shelf space. 😂
The greens and teal color palette give some serious Mystery Machine vibes, anyone else?
Tiago, I just got my Lego Titanic yesterday and I am beginning the bridge section of the bow… just ridiculously satisfying so far. I am just engrossed in the building techniques and impressed with the scale! I’m going to be happy and sad once it is completed. Such an incredible set. Can’t see myself buying another set anytime soon. Unless… what if Lego came out with a Lego Titanic wreck set?? 😮
It's one of the very few sets I would consider taking apart to build again! Enjoy the build! Look out for the TC Tombstone 👀
I think it would be better with a different color scheme. The orange tree, black trunk, and teal ground just doesn't look nice to me.
Agree about the teal, it's a bit much. Looks easy enough to replace though.
This seems super sweet.
Like his honest review haha
They need to come out with a family tree tapestry Lego set. That way it can hang and you can see the people you’ve placed on display. Might be a bit tricky though.
Legit the first thing I thought of when I saw the book was lord of the rings
Do you plan on reviwing the dreamzz sets? There's some interesting stuff there lately
i’m gonna be getting a couple of these just to use the tree in a lego city, because the tree itself is very pretty. unfortunately i’ll have like 400 leftover parts per set.
I think they would have been more successful if they had gone with a more stylized tree. More like the two-dimensional tree on the cover of the included book. They could have more readily gotten away with the odd base if the tree were less realistic in form. That would also allow a shelf display to have a full side of photos facing out for easier viewing.
I appreciate your uncompromising opinions. You get sets from Lego but still give fair reviews, even negative in some cases. That makes you my favorite source of Lego reviews anywhere.
Love the honest opinion! The original idea set looked a lot better to me! You made a lot of great points and I really appreciate that! Thank you! ❤-Erica
i'd buy this as it screams parts pack. prob save it for when i need to hit a high gwp total though.
LOL, I love the "Tiago tree" with all of your passport photos hanging from it.
That photo clip piece I've seen before, as I have a few from the LEGO Dots series. Maybe that's the only place they've been so far? I don't know. I do agree with you, this set feels too niche for me, and I honestly don't love the way it displays the photos; they obstruct the tree. It would have been better if the tree was a bit more two-dimensional and the photos were interspersed around the tree, rather than looking like some kind of photo zoetrope.
Every time I see a set like this, it makes me wish for the return of original themes.
the round base feels like a lego friends set, which isn't bad, i like the friends theme.
The thing getting me is I could probably find something that does the same job, for the same size at a home decor store for half the price. This isn’t something that needs to be LEGO but especially when the pictures will just cover all of the leaves and branches on the tree, the most visually appealing part.
Well said. He doesn't really review the build, unfortunately, but the build is half the point of buying a Lego set, and it doesn't look that interesting or challenging. The other point is to display it, and it would be hidden by pictures, so why bother?
Oh man, I want that phone booth soo bad.
Love your thumbnail pictures
This seems like a set made specifically for people like my dad who are super into family history.
Thanks for the review. Price seems terrible in all currencies for what it is and how it looks. (Why the discount in $?)
Can you make reviews for retired sets?
The thumbnail mate🤭😁
I personally do not enjoy the tree since I don't have a family!
💀
Found family?
I’m single and I don’t have siblings or kids. It doesn’t appeal to me. It also an awkward design.
you could post pictures of your friends that you love
@@axeavierew friends
I like the idea behind it but the execution is just "off". The base looks messy with all the green/blue layers, and like you said in the video, the majority of the photos wouldn't be on display. I think a plain green tree with no accessories apart from the clips would allow someone to customise it how they like. I also think having it more 2D and spread out would allow for better photo placement.
I totally agree with your criticisms here. I think the idea of a Lego family tree is genius, but this set isn't super well designed. The colors clash, the decorations feel tacked on, and most importantly the shape doesn't lend itself to displaying photos at all. I feel this should've been a flat picture-like set with some depth, like the Starry Night one.
I've seen the 'photo holder' element at least once before, in the 40600 Disney 100 Gift set.
That one is a brick with the photo holder part. This one is different, like a plate with the photo holder thing
@@TiagoCatarino Oh, good catch!
I KNOW MY BRICKS 👀
The gimmick about 2D family trees is that they fork at pairings, this just seems like an odd way to display photos.
I don't see the appeal. It is a tree. That you can hang some photos on.there are a lot of much better non-Lego options to do that instead of the clunky way this one displays photos.
I think what frustrates me the most with it, is when I think of all the Idea submissions that were rejected in favour of this one.
So apparently I'm the niche audience because I'm one of the few that likes the red phone booth set and will likely be buying it. I just think it's neat.
There's a godzilla minus one set on lego ideas with Godzilla, a train and building which looks really great, so hoping that gets picked up.
i think the concept is nice but it wouldve worked better as a 2 or 2+ dimensional tree instead of the 3D version they went with since then all photos would be visible all the time
I actually really like the idea of a Lego family tree, it's surprisingly unique and feels like a cute way to use a hobby (Lego) as a way you can bond with your family and share memories.
However I think this set unfortunately suffers the recent trend of Lego Ideas sets, where for one reason or another it unfortunately falls flat on it's face.
I think your review perfectly shows why why the original submission was much larger in scale (and more one sided/2D iirc? I'll have to double check) because photos typically aren't small, and the need to turn it around without a spinning function is a bit of a hassle. (Don't even get me started on dusting or cleaning)
I don't know why, but I can't help but feel like Lego is shooting themselves in the foot at every turn with the Ideas theme lately..
-The Orient Express wasn't properly checked by QC before release and also had a drastic change to the engine for a genuinely _ludicrous_ price.
-The Polaroid turned out incredible but given it's scale and piece count, had a price far too high (although I pin that on the IP partner similarly to the OE's redesign)
-Now the family tree, a really creative idea, was shot down and hampered by being downsized despite not having an IP partner restricting or controlling size and price.
I like the Lego Ideas theme for the potential it has, but when you compare current sets released to ones like the Grand Piano or Ship in a Bottle, I can't help but feel like Lego is either intentionally making bad choices to kill the theme or there's something else going on..
Either way, thank you for the review as always Tiago.
Not a huge fan of this, but always good to see nice review 😊
If you're supposed to customize figures to place there, why doesn't it come with a few? Why does it have a ton of extra flowers when you still can't change the colour of the leaves (like the Tree House)? If it's going to be a family tree, why aren't there are least three tiers of connectors so you can show parents and grandparents generations? Really don't understand the design of this.
I saw this without reading the title and thought this was a Scooby Doo Set cuz the base.
I personally love this, i just plan to change the colors on the base to darker colors as that was my only critique. I liked the original idea too but am good with the photo holder changes as well.
where are you finding rhese
Yeah I dont really get the appeal of this one lol
The base colors give me Scooby-Doo vibes
I wish it was a more normal set with a small tree house
I saw it in the the store the other day and I do like the tree but I don't really like the concept of hanging small pictures in the tree. Amd although I really like teal as a color I don't think it looks right in this set. So although it's nice it's not really for me.
I would gift this to an orphan
Hi Tiago, looking forward to some original designs by you :)

Here's some before and after working for LEGO: www.flickr.com/photos/catarino0937/with/49776346041
Don't think I'll be going to MOC's anytime soon though :)
How this *This* get picked? There are some great ideas how did this thing get made.
I think it was a contest winner
Skipping this, getting the London Phone Box as it’s my wife and I’s 10th anniversary soon, and we went to London (and Ireland) for our honeymoon).
Neat idea for a kid to do as a project on their family tree but not up my alley.
I would buy multiples of these just to make a forest out of them. That would look impressive I feel
The color of the tree was meant to be different than other trees.
However I still wish the color was different for a family tree
The base should have been a different color
The accessories are great
This set will surely go on discount like the other sets that don't sell well.
one for the parts bin
Tiago’s family tree: himself
🥲
I don't find you complaining to much. The base just is not right. To big, to high, to.. to much. While the tree itself is nice. And all these extra pieces are not needed.
Actually, the price doesn't look that great in any regard: I bought a Cada set recently that's as good as any Lego product with 1200 pieces for around $50 US. Either way, the tree color choices are interesting, but I have zero interest in buying this one. (The Ideas series does seem to be treading water, with too many ideas getting reused in different guises: real-world tech or mechanical objects (camera, typewriter, piano), models of TV/movie sets, etc. And the prices are too often crazy.)
I can see this sitting on shelves, it seems a strange subject. Maybe one to buy and put away sealed, there may not be too many sold…
Does the color scheme of the base remind anyone else of Scooby Doo?
Totally!
I dont understand having black trunk. Most trees have brown trunk.
bro is his whole family
🥲
it looks very clunky and unfinished, like a moc but in a bad way.
I have a few family members in mind who would get the back of the tree :D
Definitely great for the Asian public, CNY coming soon ❤
Really not my thing but this is something my brother who's intp Polaroids would love.
