  • This IIHS crash test demonstrates what happens to unrestrained children in a frontal crash. About a third of children under 13 who were killed in crashes in 2019 weren't restrained. That's more than 200 kids.

    Wow. IIHS recreated this crash setup from many years ago. Back then, it was a Plymouth Voyager. Same positions of the dummies too.

      Yeah, Its crazy to see how airbag engineers design airbags now in the 2010s and 2020s, but if you look back at the 90s and early 2000's, the passenger airbag is just to big really for any survival space.

    Being a police officer I have seen so many horrific accidents like this. I can never understand why anyone would take that risk.

      Hi I'm a bus driver 15+ years class 1&2 inc bike . I see it daily . Its shocking . And as for phone usage . I keep sating how police would make a killing simply walking in traffic booking those on phones ..

    And here in India, kids stand in the back seats leaning against the front seats. Can't imagine how horrific it would be if a child would be yeeted out of the car through the front window

    Horrific to see what could happen, but also amazing to see the multi-stage technology of that passenger side airbag! That 2nd stage basically threw the dummy upwards into the windshield😮

      The Chrysler Pacifica has dual knee airbags in addition to the standard-fare driver and passenger airbags.

      It’s because of the way the Pacifica’s dual stage passenger airbag works. If there’s less than a certain amount of weight on the seat, the passenger airbag will only inflate its first stage, and will then deploy the second stage late in the crash so it doesn’t inflate on first responders inadvertently.

    this happen to me too. I was like 6 or 8 years old i was with my dad in the car. My dad had to brake suddenly, because of a stupid driver, i was flinged to the front hitting my head against the dashboard. I regret doing that.

      I’m fairly sure the kid in the front seat would have died. He decelerated at the same time the airbag was inflating, accelerating him backwards and multiplying the force on him

    How old/big is the child in the front seat supposed to be? In what circumstance would the passenger airbag off light be lit? Can the passenger airbag still deploy if the off light is lit?

      Most children do ride restrained (close to 90%), yet about a third of kids killed in crashes aren't strapped in. While using a seat belt is better than nothing, children get the most protection when strapped into the proper child restraint for their age, height and weight.

      There is no link in ANY car between a childseat and the car's electronics.
      I have two children and two child seats... Zero warnings as to whether they've unbuckled themselves. My 5 year can easily fasten and unfasten herself from her own seat.
      Other than me staring at her WHILE driving, how would I know if she unbuckled herself, genius? 🤨

      ...I guess you've never actually used a child seat then because neither of my child seats makes a sound when being unbuckled.
      There is no "click", there is no "pop"... you depress the button and buckles slide out. In case you didn't know, child seats are not even remotely similar to the buckles in a car.

      The simple physics dictate that if the vehicle experiences a sudden acceleration or deceleration you're going to move independently of the vehicle if you're not strapped in.       Yes. The vast majority of children are restrained in vehicles, yet 1/3 of fatalities involve unrestrained children. It's similar for adults. Most people wear seat belts, but about half of fatalities involve unrestrained occupants. If we could just get everyone to buckle up we'd drastically cut fatalities.

      If 1/3 of kids are unrestrained at all times, then the statistics indicate the restraints do not improve chances of survival. However, if 1/30 of kids are unrestrained at all times, then the chances of dying of the unrestrained kid are 10 times higher than that of the kid whose parents put her in a restraint.

      Some kinds of automobile accidents are going to be severe enough that no amount of reasonable safety equipment will ensure the survival of the occupants. Massively dissimilar weights, vehicles into entirely solid obstructions, vehicles that end up crushed under the weight of something else, vehicles into bodies of water, and certainly other situations will probably never be entirely eliminated.
      Most likely the vast majority of those unrestrained kids would have survived had they been restrained. Restraining children is the law basically everywhere and it would not come as a surprise that anyone who cannot afford a carseat can probably manage to get one for free. There's basically no excuse for not restraining kids.

      National observation surveys indicate that 88 percent of child passengers younger than age 13 were restrained in 2019. Ninety-eight percent of children from birth to 12 months were restrained, compared with 94 percent of children ages 1 to 3, 86 percent of children ages 4 to 7 and 87 percent of children ages 8 to 12.

      Not all airbags will inflate in any crash, only the ones needed based on crash sensors that are positioned around the car. Because this was a direct frontal impact, only the front airbags were deployed. There are also 4 frontal (note the knee airbags) and not just 2.
