  • Sea kayaking around the coast near Rhoscolyn, Anglesey. Great to be back in the kayak after recovering from a new knee and on a sunny day of settled weather with members of the Macclesfield and District Canoe club. Using trolleys, we left the campsite at Outdoor Alternative and followed the path to find a launch site amongst the rocky shoreline. Not an easy launching site but with many hands the boats were soon down to the water’s edge. Superb views to the south east of Snowdonia and the Lleyn Peninsula. We rock-hopped along the coast to the beach “Traeth Cymyran” which is directly next to the RAF Valley airfield. There was a jet of water coming out of the inland sea with the ebbing tide but we were soon over that to try the small surf coming into the beach.
After a ride or two we headed back along the coast to Borthwen which is a popular destination with all sorts of water craft. Next to the old lifeboat station there is a channel which leads to the small less well known beach “Porth y Corwgl” - an excellent lunch spot.
As we finished a most relaxing lunch, a large group of sea kayakers arrived from the annual Symposium based up the west coast of Holy Island and we headed out to explore the rocks around Rhoscolyn Beacon. There were many seals sunbathing on the rocks and we kept a good distance as we approached the Beacon. Paddling between the rocks we were slow and quiet and although we did come close to some seals they were not disturbed.
Leaving the Beacon we headed over to the large suite of rocks towards Rhoscolyn Head. There was a dive rib nearby and quite a few climbers on the cliffs. After watching the climbers for a while the large cave at the point beckoned. The swell was minimal and a few backed into the cave for some photo opportunities. Then it is was time to head back and rock-hop back along the coast to our starting point. The tide having gone out left a challenging landing and portage over a gate but it didn’t spoil the day.
