PKM Machine Gun: a belt fed beast

- We take a peek behind the Iron Curtain, at a formidable platform, the PKM. This machine gun is a belt fed beast, capable of super controllable burst fire, or a hail of fully automatic 7.62x54 glory. Introduced in the 1960s, this general purpose machine gun mirrors the simple yet extremely effective internal traits apparent on Kalashnikov designs. Easy to disassemble and reassemble, this highly capable, man-portable platform is a tried and true legend...even if it feeds from the wrong side of the gun.

Which is correct side to feed ammo in gun? Western countries feed ammo in guns from left and Russians from right what's a big deal the thing which doesn't follow western rules is not wrong side, Americans and Europeans should understand this bitter truth, well It seems they won't understand

I know that gun very well..
Excellent toy for big boys.

Respect for you.
Can a 75 kg 5ft 9 male handle it with adequate training

@@start2957 wow. Great
I love the m240B. It served me so well in Iraq
However, the pkm is the better machinegun. Its the best balance of weight, recoil, rate of fire, and accuracy.
Thank you for the honest opinion. It's rare at our days
@Nicholas Rodriguez What makes you think the M240 os better than the PK?

@Nicholas Rodriguez like? Come on, spit it out, you have to back your opinion with fact otherwise your opinoin means nothing to us and why should we even care about your opinion then?

My civilian helicopter was hit by an armor piercing PKM round while flying over Andar, Afghanistan in 2012. Fortunately it hit the auxiliary battery behind the other pilot's seat and the only damage was the entry hole in the sheet metal and the battery. We fished the round and tracer remnant out of the shattered lead acid battery. It was a pretty good shot as we were 2,500' AGL. I had a lot of cautious respect for the PKM and its big brother the 12.7mm DShK in my five years there.
Russian weapon design is simple, functional and ruggedly beautiful!
: ) ты прав
It is called quality.
Functional, practical, low maintenance and works anywhere.
PKM is not so simple, as it looks like. But it still a very good LMG! Even today, after more than 50 years since it was designed!
It`s not a "super mschinegun" or "greatest in the world", like russians love to tell, but it still a very good weapon.
Thats why Russians won 2 world wars. Probably would the 3rd.
@@balkanboy1203 "Russians won 2 world wars"...
LOL
The irony is that the 2-step feeding system made the PKM receiver even shorter (and lighter) than in push-through systems. So the good old 7.62x54R played in a favor here.

When I served in the army, I had a chance to shoot from a PCM, an unforgettable experience))))
I totally agree with you, - unforgettable! ;))
Learn something new every day. The belt system is old AND the cartridge is stripped from the belt then feed into the chamber. Amazing
It's light. It's reliable. And of course, It's deadly.
Its do 2 action but still simpler than most machine guns
Been on the receiving end of the PKM, not fun

there’s a reason why the feed is on the wrong side, because if you hold the gun fore side with your left hand and reload the gun from the right hand. so you can balance weight easily while loading the gun.
Did u ever tried to reload such weapon on foot?
This would be my go-to general-purpose machine gun any day of the year. First reason and foremost, I am left-handed so the feed-ejection system is perfect for me, second is the simplicity, durability, and overall reliability of this weapon.

My grandpa used to have one. He was saying that he is not a gun fan but wanted to keep his BKC just for the self defense.

Feeding from the wrong side? The right is the right side to feed ammo to this for a very simple reason: the assistant gunner who carries most ammo will have to stay 3 meters appart from the mg when firing prone if he would sit on the left - how would he pass the ammo belts, the the spare barrels, how would he assist in any malfunction correction, how would he comunicate to the gunner from that distance etc ? When firing a mg from prone position the gunner needs to shoulder the weapon at about 15 degrees angle with the legs wide open well driven onto the ground - maybe you'd like the assistant gunner to mount the gunner or something...
Also, " does two actions instead of one" - that actually makes the feeding mechanism stronger, smoother, more reliable, safer and simpler ( in number of parts and handling as well).
Say what you want about socialism, but when it comes to guns, these soviets managed to build the best to last for a century as that.
We had to disassemble it in 16 seconds to get excellent score in Kazakhstani military, but some of us managed to do it in under 10. And assemble in about 20, which includes loading, idle trigger release and putting on the safety. We weren't heavily trained on it though, only had 5-6 tries each. Mostly came from muscle memory of doing it while cleaning the gun, which you don't time obviously and don't do in the most efficient way.
"Ivan!!! we need a new LMG"
"how about belt fed upside down ak?"
"Oppa, you're genius Ivan"
You mean, Mikhail Kalashnikov. He and his technician team were the ones who designed and made the PK machine gun.

Unloaded, thr PKM weighs almost as much as an M249. It's lighter than thr m60, a gun specifically designed to be lightweight, while also being far more durable and reliable.
russians used maxims heavily too i believe, would make sense that they wanted something that could use the belts they already had
Sent this video to my team leader who was shot by one(He was wounded).

I like it easy to use and maintain and durability very useful in Urban warfare ❤️ but need a scope

This belt isn't from Maxim gun - it is from SG, which is late 30's heavy machine gun. Also some Maxims were adopted to use this type of belts, but it was never intended to serve primarily for this role

Fun fact it's actually a 2 lug bolt same with the ak. The two smaller lugs are the locking surfaces
Love this machine gun it has a heavier barrel then other PK predecessors and its air cooled barrels heaviness makes it more accurate I have shot that 7.62x54R round with the Mosin-Nagant rifle 😎 you can see it in my channel
I love the background music, makes me feel like I'm on Pandora from Borderlands
I love the fact that you could drop a man with one of these in pre-WWI Russia and he would never need to worry about ammo.
Mg34 and PKM are the 2 most beautiful light machine guns ever made in history.
What kind of music use You for this video? Cumberland Gap of David Rawlings, is’n it?
Also handles the charging handle the opposite of correctly.
Thank you. Palm up, hold it to the rear when inspecting and clearing and don't dry fire and send the bolt forward;pull the trigger and guide it forward
To unload the PKM, hold down trigger until empty.
Barrel lock is big disadvantage , after 500 rounds barrel of standard pkm overheats, but to switch barrel you have to do a lot of manipulations
There's no sense to shoot 500rnd belt at one time.

كم وزن السلاح ؟
@@ABoMtS 9.0 kg
Ага, именно так))
After going to Poland for joint NATO small scale excersizes I can honestly say the polish PKMM (PKM with a folding stock polymer furniture and better optic mount)
Is crazy lightweight compared to any 7.62x51 Nato machine guns and probably lighter than lot of 5.56 belt fed MGs.
It feels in weight like its less than 2 M4 rifles and the way its balanced maybes it feel lighter than what it is on paper.
The Russian 7.62x54R is a tad more powerful than 7.62x51 Nato, rimmed for the extractors pleasure. Its bigger than the Nato round but the weight feels the same maybe as steel cases weigh less.
It's the oldest cartridge still in military use and was based off the first smokeless powder cartridge the 8mm lebel.
They are trying very hard to make a PKM type gun in 7.62 Nato but its not going very well.
In my opinion this is maybe the best GPMG in the world and defiantly the best MG I have ever shot, you can even shoot it standing up and shouldered for a few short bursts, so much lighgter, very easy to maintain and swap barrels and the Soviets have all ways had better hammer forging and chrome lining so even 40+ yo steel case ammo is very accurate with no stoppages.
The non disintegrating belt did not realy bother me much at all and you did not realy need a loader or be super careful how you placed the belt as the feeding mechanism seems to be very strong and powerful.
I think if you gave this to any soldier in a western army they say we want it right now.
Since you can use modern optics and NV is great and it's so light and portable, barrel changes are very fast and when you Barry it by the handle it does not feel very heavy at all.
Maybe a short stroke piston would make it more accurate but it was very accurate in my opinion.
I can't see this weapon system or the 7.62x54r going anywhere for a very long time.
I have never shot an MG42 or MG3 or any MG based on the MG 42 in 7.62 Nato, maybe they are better but not sure.
It's a good thing that they used the old maxim belts as in the Ukraine they are using maximum guns, the 32 (soviet pre war MG with a pan magazine on top)
Clever instruction on the use of weapons drenched in the blood of thousands of people!..
The PK (Russian: Пулемёт Калашникова, transliterated as Pulemyot Kalashnikova, or "Kalashnikov's machine gun"),[7] is a belt-fed general-purpose machine gun, chambered for the 7.62×54mmR rimmed cartridge.
Designed in the Soviet Union and currently in production in Russia,[8] the original PK machine gun was introduced in 1961 and the improved PKM variant was introduced in 1969. The PKM was designed to replace the SGM and RP-46 machine guns that were previously in Soviet service.
The weapon remains in use as a front-line infantry and vehicle-mounted weapon with Russia's armed forces and has also been exported extensively and produced in several other countries under license. The Main Artillery Directorate of the Soviet Union (GRAU) adopted specification requirements for a new 7.62 mm general-purpose company and battalion-level machine gun that was to be chambered for a rifle cartridge in 1955.
In 1958 a machine gun prototype, developed by G.I. Nikitin and Yuri M. Sokolov, successfully passed field tests. Based on the results of the tests it was decided in 1960 to manufacture a batch of Nikitin-Sokolov machine guns for service tests and then put the machine gun into production at the Kovrov Mechanical Plant. However, when the Nikitin-Sokolov machine gun was almost completed, a team of Izhevsk Mechanical Plant designers, headed by M.T. Kalashnikov, and further consisting of V.V. Krupin, V.N. Pushchin, A.D. Kryakushin, as well as Startsev, Kamzolov, Koryakovtsev, Yuferev, joined the competition. Their machine gun prototype was based on the well-proven gas-operated rotary-bolt design of the Kalashnikov-pattern arms.
The Kalashnikov and the Nikitin-Sokolov prototypes underwent service tests in the Central Asian, Odessa, and Baltic Military Districts, as well as at the Vystrel officer training courses in late 1960. The Main Missiles and Artillery Directorate and the Ministry of the Defence Industry preferred the Kalashnikov design. The Kalashnikov design was found to be more reliable and cheaper to manufacture than the design of Grigory Nikitin and Yuri Sokolov.
The PK/PKS was put into production at the Kovrov Mechanical Plant and used the tripod mount and an ammunition belt boxes originally designed for the Nikitin-Sokolov prototype machine gun.
Nikitin's and Sokolov's machine gun design was later used in the 12.7 mm NSV heavy machine gun that was put into production in 1971.

Take this lightweight reliability and make two improvements: 1) A short feed cover like Knight's LAMG and the new SIG M250 and 2) Constant recoil mitigation system like Knight's LAMG or the Ultimax 100. Finally, miniaturize it for cartridges in the class of 6.5 Grendel and 6mm ARC.

The only disadvantage of this weapon is its bait system which is supplied from the right side. Because if any right-handed shooters were wearing short-sleeved clothes, their arms would be injured from being hit by the hot casings from the extractor receiver.
