    I don't think I will ever forget zenkichi's speech in the elections where he explained basicly the events of season one and medaka's success in filling the place with flowers from all the pepole she helped and than flippes it on it's head asking everyone if they have no shame putting they're problems on a lone first year girl. it was so mind blowing to me

    Medaka and Zenkichi relationship is so bizarre and wholesome that to their childhood friends state developed a true love for each other. Medaka is still overpowered but Zenkichi is the guy that even being just a normal person can grow and become stronger, thing that Medaka can't do because she's JUST the strongest in the whole universe! Zenkichi is the one that give Medaka a reason, she's THE box that need something to have in her void... and that is definitely Zenboy

      true, and def not just about anyone could make her cling to a purpose from someone
      oddly enough, seeing smol Zenkichi smile could have made her fall in love and either assume the act(helping people) would let her rexperience this feeling or she wanted to boy to keep smiling

    And this is why Zenkichi is one of my favorite manga characters of all time nay... favorite character in all of fiction!
    He's a meta representation of how we are all capable of being a protagonist but doesn't lie to us about how we are entitled to be one.
    Instead, he goes out of his way to show us what really matters, that strength of character is the most important trait of all.

  • @KillyMonster
    @KillyMonster Před rokem +44

    The real main protagonist for some people, and they are not wrong. Zenkichi is a great character, the normal guy with empathy and courage who belives in friendship. A deconstruction of a main character, but also the normal character that most of people could identify. People criticized Medaka to be the protagonist because she's too perfect and not close to the reader. But the real character who's closer to the reader, the normal guy in a normal life like us, is Zenkichi. He's a normal individual who struggle in a world of uniques humans being, but the difference between the other normal persons, he try to understand anyone. When majority of normal peoples in the world don't try to understand people, is not because they don't want to, but because they just "stay aside". Zenkichi is the representation of a normal human being who try to understand people and because of that he can see them like anyone else, help them and even live by their side. He does what normal people should do, understand people, don't see them like they was under or below you in anything, just realize that we are equal because first of all we are all human and all imperfect in a way. For me, he's not only the proof that we can all be the main character, we ARE the main character of OUR stories, of our own lives.
    PS: 10:30 This scene was true gold

      spitting
      also about Medaka, the point is that she is too perfect and can't resonate with people, even her protagonistic traits(fighting stuff aside) sterm from clinging her too perfect existence clinging to a purpose, though by the time she was freed she didn't change her attitude, she became more carefree and part of everyone and showed understanding people(where the selection arc showed her lack of understanding) in opposed to some deity people seek aid from or being above humans

    What I like about Zenkichi is that all of his major victories have to do with empathy. He didn't just see himself as a human, he was always striving to try to see the humanity in others, that's why "it was as if his heart was full as far as the eyes could see". Thank you very much for this video, it was great.

    These are just some thoughts of mine, and they're not even about the Zenkichi analyzed in this video, but here goes: (:D)
    One of the best fanfic I have ever read, even until this day, is a Medaka Box fanfic named "World As Myth" on Fanfiction.
    It was, in my opinion, a long way ahead of its time. The premise is simple: A story that takes "Zenkichi being childhood friends with Kumagawa" absolutely seriously. I actually started reading it since my friend recommended it to me, saying that "This is one of those few Medaka Box fics that treat Zenkichi and Kumagawa on equal grounds, unlike the plethora of fics that are heavily biased towards either."
    The story has good plot twists, incredible homage to side characters almost no one knows about in the manga, foreshadowing to intriguing mysteries, Medaka being well wrtitten despite having a different backstory.
    The most exciting part of reading this story, however, was finding the subtle yet well-thought changes to Zenkichi. He has changed a lot in this timeline ( if you count the total number of differences throughout the story) , yet still keeps his good nature and supportive-aggresive attitude, he is just directing that attiude to Kumagawa instead of Medaka. Perhaps it's due to Kumagawa being less of a Loser in this timeline, perhaps it's thanks to the involvement of all those side characters he befriended from not having to devote to Medaka, maybe even bacause of the 5-D Chess planning from Ajimu Najimi, who knows?
    It feels great to think "Huh, so that is what Zenkichi will turn out to be if he had met Kumagawa at the nursery 13 years back. Now I wonder if the heroes could even beat Iihiko or Fukurou with such a different Medaka."
    I guess it could be called a different type of Wish Fulfillment, the type in which your favorite characters are put under a different scenarios and still retain their innermost nature while you try to guess what would change about them under such otherworldly circumstances.
    It is a real shame that the author stopped writing right after introducing best girl ( Namanie Nienami ) and was about to send our heroes to the Shiranui Village. That arc would have been amazing.
    I am trying to commision a "World As Myth" webcomic so that more people could experience this masterpiece of a fanfic and maybe, just maybe invigorate the author to continue World As Myth 3.
    If you made it here, thank you for hearing my Ted Talk. :))

    Something I see the character Hitoyoshi Zenkichi stand for is, in a world with abnormals and minuses, with people that can do things you cant...you don't need that special something they have to stand with them, that it's fine to be normal.

    Great analysis as always, but I took to notice that the first half of the video (or at least before the mic volume lowered) had too many lines being sped through as if you were trying to read the lines as quickly as possible. It's just how I viewed the video because, in my opinion, you usually have good pacing between one sentence to the next. Otherwise the only other complaint I had was the mic volume dropping during the Zenkichi vs. lihiko fight, but that ones a nitpick.

      He’s a Zero the most neutral a person can be ‘or the most normal someone can be’ the reason he can fight abnormals and minuses is because he sees them as just people not as abnormals or minuses, it’s not down to a skill it’s down to his mindset, the series can be quite meta with stuff like that and this is a great example

    I don’t think Zenkichi is the protagonist just ‘cause he’s been narrating the whole series. The real protagonist is Medaka since she’s been mentioned by all the secondary characters. Also, Wikipedia says that the series follows Medaka.

  • @joethompson3621
    @joethompson3621 Před rokem +8

    Tbh I find the fact that Zenkichi had to prove him self “worth” to be with Medaka annoying, and even hypocritical. When she forced him to fight her for the student council, that should have been when he didn’t fight her for it and instead of playing HER game he does the NORMAL thing and stand in the sideline (as beating her is almost impossible) , and then as she loses all her “friends” one by one, she slowly loses her powers and her delusions, cause she pushed her self for him, so without him she loses her will. Then as she is “knocked off her pedestal” she confronts him and for the first time SHE admits she is wrong. (Cause that is my only problem with the manga, she never goes through any character development). But hey, that’s my opinion

    • @DenisK21
      @DenisK21 Před rokem +5

      Except she WAS "knocked off her pedestal" and she DID admit she was wrong. Isolating her wouldn't have led to anything close to what you think it would. In fact, her fight with Tsurubami Kamome demonstrated that her Abnormality just got even stronger/worse as she got more isolated.
      And Zenkichi challenged her in an entirely normal way that literally anybody at all could've done, with a simple student council president election. It was through this that not only he, but every single person who didn't vote for her won against her "I live to make strangers happy" mindset.

    • @Fut_re
      @Fut_re Před měsícem

      Standing aside and letting her crumble is the anti-thesis to Zenkichi’s character. He wouldn’t do that, not to the person he’s inadvertently damned to a hellish purpose for 13 years. Not to the love of his life. At first it was about proving his worth but quickly became something more: he wanted to beat her to free her, to let her live not as the Stufent Council President or any form of savior, but as Medaka Kurogami the high school student.
      Personally speaking, I find that Medaka having a clear lack of character development (very few and far between) just builds up the change more. She didn’t need character development because she’s meant to be that perfect human, which is the entire reason why Zenkichi takes to the final stage. His win was to LET her develop, to not leave her stagnant in her role and blend her life and her “duty” together. She still doesn’t develop a lot after this, but she does become honest about herself and Zenkichi and she does become more normal by interacting with her fellow classmates and just enjoying school life. That’s a big jump from her Messiah Complex she’s been carrying around for most of the series prior.
