I've always loved her. She was a sinner and a winner. She was Shirley and she was Shelley. That one gesture - gently touching the shoulder of Elizabeth Hartman as if to say you are not forgotten or left out - spoke more than words can say. Elizabeth Hartman was a wonderful actress and perhaps she didn't win because often the Oscars are based on a track record as opposed to a single great performance. It may have been assumed her day would come. Certainly she must have believed it because she deserved and earned her day in the sun. When it didn't come, it may have led to her tragic suicide. RIP Shelley and Elizabeth. Forever alive in my loving heart.

I just watched this clip and wow, Shelley Winters deserved that Oscar. I was glad she won. On the other hand, I am disturbed by some of the comments on this page especially leaning towards Winters as a woman offscreen. It's called ACTING, people! C'mon, Shelley Winters was playing a character for crying out loud. Some of you need to learn how to separate fact from fiction. There are many famous instances of onscreen vicious characters played well to a T. Does Barbara Stanwyck from "Double Indemnity," Mr. Potter from "It's a Wonderful Life," the Nurse Davis character from "The Snake Pit," or Anthony Perkins from "Psycho" come to mind? What about Nurse Ratched, Frank Booth from "Blue Velvet," or Hannibal Lector from "The Silence of the Lambs?" Liking Winters' performance doesn't make me an evil person like watching Tarantino movies makes me want to go out and shoot somebody or watching the films of Lars von Trier make me want to become a clinically depressed nihilist. Roseann, the character that won Shelley Winters her second Oscar, was a cruel, abusive mother from hell and a c-u- next Tuesday. Even Shelley Winters, who later said in an interview that she always found redeeming qualities in the characters she played, hated this woman. I don't blame her. A part of that probably had to do with the fact that Shelley was a mother to a daughter herself in real life so I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to play a vicious drunk onscreen that engendered her own daughter's blindness. Nonetheless, Winters' Best Supporting Actress win for "A Patch of Blue" has to be one of the most deserving wins in Oscar history.

well, in defence of the commenters, winters was a pretty awful person in real life, playing it up in public aside. if you're going to stick up for somebody, learn a little about who you're sticking up for. take your own advice about seperating fact from fiction.
