  • Long before the days of giant theme parks, the United States had many amusement parks where families gathered for a cool escape on a hot summer day. Celebrate these pre-Disney parks with visits to Playland in Rye, New York; Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana; and California’s Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, where vacationers can still reach for the brass ring on the merry-go-round.
    Credits go to PBS Video.

What a fantastic nostalgic video. The kids and their goofy innocence was funny.

If you like Santa Cruz beach park and Coney Island then you will love Old Orchard Beach Maine. The waves, the sun, the pier full of restaurants, they even have an arcade and amusement park for the kiddies ...I think it is called Astroland too!

We have a few great old amusement parks here in New England. The mentioned Lake Compounce in Bristol CT is the best. We also have Canobie Lake Park in salem,NH which goes back over 100 years and Story Land ,Glen NH for the kiddies has all the nursery ryhme attractions exactly like Idlewild

It was fun to watch this again. There is a park here in Utah that opened in 1886 - Lagoon - and is still part of the fabric of the community. It was cool to hear about all of the other parks that mean so much to their communities.

I love coasters, especially with a lot of loops. Sadly, I can't ride them because my C-spine and upper thoracic are so unstable. Makes me sad.

About how they shown a couple of parks with miniature trains, there are some parks with trains as big as 3 foot narrow gauge, even Cedar Point has a 3 foot narrow gauge railroad, there are even some parks that started with trains like the Tweetsie Railroad in North Carolina and Little Amerrika in Marshall, Wisconsin

Dollywood has a full size steam train.....used to be named Rebel Railroad until Dolly Parton put her spin on it. Great top 5 amusement park. If you can find Pigeon Forge,TN , near Great Smoky Mountains Nat. Park...it's worth the trip!

Leap the Dips is in trouble. The park will not be operating any of its rides in the 2024 season. Future unknown.

Leap the Dips has to be maintained by law. While Lakemont isn't running it this year it's not getting torn down.
