  • In this video, we’ll be building the T-38A Talon in the style of Tyndall AFB’s 2nd Fighter Training Squadron’s paint scheme in honor of fighter pilot Major C.W. “Mover” Lemoine. He flew these jets as part of the 301st - a Red Air Aggressor unit to train F-22 Raptor pilots on BFM tactics. We’ll be trying new techniques of gloss coating a model with household floor wax, working with aftermarket resin parts for the first time on this channel, some scratch building, and creating custom emblems.
    Many thanks to “Mover” for the Intro!

    I’m a big fan of this gentleman and I hope you become one too, if you’re not already. Major C. W. “Mover” Lemoine has his own popular CZcams channel that discusses his aviation career flying F-16 Vipers, F/A-18 Hornets, T-38s, helicopters, his fictional books, as well as many other subjects too numerous to mention. He has many different interests, so check him out!

I'm intending to do it in the 2-tone grey camo scheme (dark grey front and rear) from 25 FTS, 71 FTW "Shooters".
    I'm not bothering with any aftermarket accessories though, as they are way too expensive for my liking, and the kit parts look good enough.

    Two of my favorite You Tube Channels!!! Well done on another great video and a fantastic T-38 build! But I have to ask how was the Spectre Rising book? Good on you for going with the resin cockpit in this build as the original cockpit in this kit is woefully undersized and out of scale. The detail that you have achieved is absolutely superb. It a shame you didn’t use the Wolfpack T-38A kit as the resin cockpit you used would have fitted in allot better. As with all of your You Tube videos it has become a source of inspiration, as I’m working on the same kit, I have spent the last two nights finishing off the cockpit details and PE ejection seat straps on my ‘White Rocket’. A tedious task but you really do make it look easy! I’m definitely going to copy your use of clear sprue to make the Nav lights on the tail!
    As a former serviceman myself, when you’re building a kit like this for someone else especially with such personal detail, it goes from being just a model plane to a 3D work of art. That embodies all the emotions and history of this event. I really do feel for ‘Mover’ getting his wings chopped but I really hope He gets another wings slot, and hopefully another Guard unit will pick him up.
    As with much of the focus in the Air Force is about Pilots, It takes at least 7 tradesmen to get one pilot airborne. As a former RNZAF Armourer I would like to thank you for your service in the Avionics Trade in the 162nd AZ, ANG. And I look really look forward to your next You Tube model build. Cheers Scotty

    Great job on the model! Looks awesome. How do you thin Tamiya for brush painting and for airbrushing? Ratio and what thinner do you use? Do you need to prime when using Tamiya paints? Do you tend to prep/clean model parts before painting? Thanks for taking the time to produce your helpful videos.

      Alcohol works good, IPA perfect (fast drying) and Mr Levelling Thinner works like a charm (slower, but levelling drying). Water: no-no!

      @MaxAfterburner  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi David, for me, I only thin for airbrushing and not for brushwork (I'm usually just performing touch-ups or very small piece tasks). With the airbrush I do about 75% paint to 25% thinner and I generally prime if I'm creating a look of uneven tones and variation in the paint scheme exposed to the elements. I've never cleaned my model pieces prior to working them. All in all, this is how I approach it while many others may do it differently and may even avoid my routine. Glad you like the videos and thanks for watching! 😃

      @@MaxAfterburner Thanks for responding so quickly. A few follow-up questions-- What thinner do you prefer to use with Tamiya paints? Your primer preference, and do you thin the primer? Do you ever use any additives like flow improvers or drying retardants? Thanks again for your helpful advice. I'm trying to decide between using Tamiya or Vallejo paints to replace Model Master acryl (no longer being made).

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, I use the Tamiya X-20A thinner for my Tamiya paints. I usually prime with the XF-69 NATO Black even when I shouldn't sometimes like the Austin Powers 747 (nobody watches that video anyway). Since I airbrush the NATO Black, I thin it the same as my other paints. I've never used any additives such as quick or slow drying products. I only have a limited amount of free time to work on models, so I don't go outside of my comfort zone too much. I'd like to try other products, though. 😃

      Hi Harry, since this one was a solid gloss color, I decided just to "prime" with the main color, then re-coat again with the same after correcting for the imperfections. It may not be the right way to go, but that's what I did on this one. 🤔

    I’ve given up on resin aftermarket parts. I could never get them to fit correctly, or they were so damaged after I tried to make them fit that I gave up and used the kit parts. Wasted quite a bit of cash on them.

    • @stevie65able

      The biggest problem with resin aftermarket is that they end up instilling a sense of inadequacy in the modeller-you know, the "100% genuine correct truly accurate detail set made from blueprints and plans, etc..." The problem is, once the cockpit set is installed in the fuselage, you are never going to see it unless you are peering down into the cockpit from above. More often than not, they don't fit well or you have to remove so much of the kit part that it ends up damaged. The one that annoys me the most is when the aftermarket part is a slightly modified kit part that may be 2-3% different from the original. I would much rather build a kit out of the box and do it well.
