My family stopped in Reno to eat lunch at Harold's Club on the way to California from Kentucky in the summer of 1966. I didn't make it back for twenty five years, and the place was still there, and it looked exactly how I remembered it. Sadly, it was torn down in the mid 1990s. It was once the busiest casino in the world; there was even a billboard sign for "Harold's Club: Reno or Bust!" on US 27 in Jessamine County, Kentucky.
Thanks for posting. That was a nice, casual look at downtown Reno. I live in the San Francisco bay are and try to make it to Reno 5 or 6 times a year. It's alot more laid back and friendly than Vegas. It's not over built and in your face like Vegas either. The temperature is pretty good too. Thanks again for making this and putting it on You Tube.
Wow - A lot of new buildings since I've last been there. Is the River Boat casino still around? That was one of my favorites - not on the main drag, but maybe a block behind it, if memory serves...
The nice thing about videos like this one is that I can always go back and watch it again... There's more video with my friend Holly. I will eventually be working on it but I'm in Florida now :)
Back in 1999, Holly and I took a road trip into the desert. She lived in LA at the time. Pictures from our road trip can be seen in the Berkeley To Inglewood video... She was scouting out places to live, and decided to settle in Sparks, which is just outside of Reno. She's one of those people who informs herself thoroughly about her surroundings. I feel partially responsible for her moving there...
@fehquig Reno was the biggest city in Nevada for many years. The population of Las Vegas in 1945 was around 5,000 people, and all the casinos were on Fremont Street. I watched a travel film on Reno tonight on CZcams that was made in 1943; the narrator states that most of the people who lived in Nevada at that time lived within thirty miles of Reno, so it's easy to see that Reno was THE place to gamble (legally) in the United States until Las Vegas developed the Strip in the 1950s.
I know there's a boat casino down in Laughlin, but I don't remember one in Reno. Of course we didn't see everything in Reno as we were just passing through. It may be gone...
I don't know when I will get there next, but it may be several years from now... My friend Holly (who does most of the talking) asked me not to be a stranger so I will have to get down that way again some day...
It depends on what you're used to, I guess. Our cars have been getting smaller, and when people twenty years younger than me see my car they often say it's huge. By the standards that I grew up with, my car is what was once called a compact.
True, but in order to attract more people there are some very good packages available in Vegas... If you stay off the strip, Vegas is pretty much like Reno.
Holly is an old friend of mine... I met her through the internet many years ago, back when everything was text, there was no spam, and every email was one that you wanted to get :)
Reno has a better climate than Vegas in my opinion. Because at least it snows in Reno during winter and its not grotesquely hot like Vegas in the Summer where Vegas can reach 115 F in the daytime.
Sigh, it was much better before it started looking like downtown Los Angeles, ah the good old days. The only good thing about it is that it is so very close to Lake Tahoe.
Is it still as vibrant as it was back in 2009/2010 ? I am surprised that you didn't hit anyone with the amount of talking you and your friend did; I don't mean to offend...I am just stating my opinion. It is a great video; I have never been this far west of the Mississippi River. The farthest west I have ever been was down to Columbus, Georgia in 2002. During that same year, I made a brief stop in Atlanta, Georgia. :)
I have not spent any time in Reno since shooting this video... I imagine it's a bit more alive than in 2009, because in 2009 we were deep in the recession...
funny, we were in reno at the exact same time....by the way, the baseball thing was a complete fail...there was NEVER any proper parking planned and to this day the baseball thing has lost money.....stupidist idea reno has ever had...the bowling alley barely keeps above water....casino's are the only success reno has ever had....
+rveeing Wewere on our way to Death Valley and Las Vegas. Incidentally, Cindy's in Las Vegas right now... She hated Death Valley, and it's one of my favorite places...
Don't J-walk, almost $200 fine. Police nice enough to let me off. Has feel of a small town. Locals very sociable. If downtown, expect to be approached by 'homeless panhandlers'. Just decline. Mayor at time had facility built to house them but was built too close to downtown. Locals want another built farther out. Weather beats Vegas hands down, plus you get Sierras, has vast array of outdoor activities, no water shortage with Truckee River. Good for seniors, singles and families.

Lots of views! Congrats....Reno has changed greatly since 2010...

Thanks for sharing ! I have enjoyed watching this video.
If only I had such a knowledgeable guide for every town I drive into...
Thanks so much Andy. I'm pretty sure I'll never get to Reno, Nevada and it was an interesting drive for me. Hugs!
That old post office was used as the police station in first "Sister Act".
Incredible! And to think I never heard of it but I hadn't been to Reno before 1999.
Must be a professional tour guide. GOT to be. ;^)
Nice tour.
Thanks for the tour

I wouldnt mind seeing the court room in the round myself, sounds interesting.

We live in Victoria, BC... I'm originally from Montreal, and Cindy's from Lethbridge, Alberta.
I saw Joe Satriani at the Pioneer center. Judah Priest made an appearance at the court house.
Cool.
Sure does! It would have been interesting to see, but at that point I had been photographing cars all afternoon :)
i grew up in reno,nv.............dont talk to anyone thats not strange.....strangers are renos finest
Nice video. Didn't you guys mak one driving through some town on the Eastcoast? For some strange reason,I find this video quite relaxing.
Ikan Knottrem-Embernow.. the world famous architect!! He did some great builings.. :)
modern architect reno city well place for living
What I like about it is that it's not so much in your face as Las Vegas, but you can still have a good time there...
I don't know much about Laughlin except that I stopped there for dinner once about twelve years ago... How about Beatty! :)
I don't know when I will get there next, but it may be several years from now... My friend Holly (who does most of the talking) asked me not to be a stranger so I will have to get down that way again some day...

Reno looks like Freemont in lasvegas! but thats weird that they have another circus circus but with out the adventure dome!
i. miss. reno
i heard some people said that boring at reno because i didn't know i still like to live there.
Making this video was my pleasure! I'll have to go back and visit for more than a day or two...
Have you and your lady friend ever visited Las Vegas ? If so, was it smaller or larger in size...when compared to Reno ?
Bwahahaha... She even forgot his name but she knew who he was...
You're more than welcome...
Victoria, Canada.
True, but in order to attract more people there are some very good packages available in Vegas... If you stay off the strip, Vegas is pretty much like Reno.
I prefer reno anytime over vegas, just way to many people in vegas and the weather is just to hot.!!
Next time I go to Reno I will make one :)
Holly is an old friend of mine... I met her through the internet many years ago, back when everything was text, there was no spam, and every email was one that you wanted to get :)
Where you guys from ??

Ok,
I have family in Vancouver.
It's not quite so big that you get lost or overwhelmed like in Vegas :)
Are there any Burger Kings or McDonald's in Reno, Nevada ? Also, who was that woman lying in the back of your vehicle (if I may ask) ?
+Dmitriy Kalik
There is a Mcdonalds right in the middle of everything on Virginia St.
Right across from the Silver Legacy casino.
Thank you for posting this awesome insider video. ;)
7:59 to the right. The Thunderbird Motel and the McDonalds with the large" M" (seen sideview) on the roof next door
omg thats exactly how it looks
I suspected that. ;^)
But she sure knows how to sell the place.
Does the college there have a bad rep?
Sigh, it was much better before it started looking like downtown Los Angeles, ah the good old days. The only good thing about it is that it is so very close to Lake Tahoe.
where are you from in Canada?
I don't know.. better ask your friend, she was the one who mentioned him.. :)
Guys maybe this is awkward but............... My name is RENO

Did he make models of them too? LOL
Buildings, even..
It only looks that way... I shot that footage back in April of last year :)

Ok
And Reno's not a particularly big city either :)
It probably sucks just like everywhere else...
Do the people seem friendlier, in your honest opinion, than say the people in Las Vegas or San Francisco ?
Don't J-walk, almost $200 fine. Police nice enough to let me off. Has feel

why do i could worse? i won't worse..guess
Reno has lost all its charm...never going back.
No. Every one in Reno is goo goo over the schools football team.
You could do worse...
