Fiverr challenged me to build a design concept in real life that's been designed by a Fiverr freelancer. I used three Industrial Designers on Fiverr to come up with a concept for a 'Superhero Assistance Device', and chose the best one. I chose the Smart Blaster concept because it seemed to be the most challenging to build in real life.

The thing that astonishes me is how u r able to keep up with a weekly uploading schedule and also make such intricate projects!
Completely agreed.
I'm also grateful that he's so up front about the advertising. I'm 100% more willing to support someone like James with an ad campaign, than someone who's doing scummy undisclosed product placement. This is peak CZcams for me.
Fiverr: Here's some money for you. How often are you going to say fiverr?
James Burton: YES!
atleast fiverrr times a minute

They specifically asked for it to be presented that way ;-)

#AD Designed on Fiverr: Smart NERF Blaster
Bet the dude that designed this is loving seeing it work in real life
He's probely crying that James put a massive ugly black box on his Masterpiece.
I like how it's just a Nerf gun but with a drone
Drone controlled by head tilt, get it straight. And it is a brilliant workaround. LoL.
Sometimes... I'll see the thumbnail and title of Jame's videos, and I think to myself 'this looks dumb.' Then I watch the video anyway and I'm like 'that was freaking AMAZING!' How James is able to bring his imagination to life but to also document it, paying special attention to his own brilliant work arounds. This was a very cool build.
I'd recommend piggybacking a camera on the eye-piece with an LED on the back of the drone. Have a vision system fly the drone to a point in the view frame that corresponds to the center of your vision.
maybe a lazer guided drone?
This is what I was thinking as well. It would greatly decrease the amount of error introduced by large head movements, that I think would be more difficult to counter. Steering with the eye is a much smaller and more precise means of control.
"James, what does your scouter say about his power level?"
"It's Fiverr!"
Cool! You could add an IR led at the back and use an IR camera as an optical tracker to error in path wrt to camera axis. Add to this some PID and you have a guided missile.
Great choice, exactly what you don't want with safety equipment is waiting for it decide you need it.
Please do the other two! I would love to see them come true!
Perhaps the eyepiece could paint the target with a laser, and the drone could be programmed to fly toward it.
This tells you that you can *do* anything and *make* anything!
Even how hard it sounds.
I swear you're like the only person on earth who can make ads I actually like watching. Also, you should sell that to Nerf
Fire Distinguisher is genius
2:14 - 2:20 had to be one of the most awkward moments I've lived
I would love to see you try and steer this thing in a much larger open space! We'd be able to see more of the control capabilities.
It would've been awesome to have combined the dart with the drone instead of strapping it too it. Like mounting the hardware to the dart itself with the props facing the rear so you'd have more yaw control. Idk what the stipulation would be with it being an ad and all, but I would totally watch this concept evolve.
might have easier control by changing the roll rather than the yaw controls of the drone. really cool idea though.
Definitely. Also, I think mapping head yaw to drone roll would have been the most natural.
I will continue to hold my breath until James figures out how to make those cyberpunk smart gyrojet guns.
Link?
they already exist.
@@Francois_Dupont gyrojet bullets exist, (hence the trademark name?), but not thrust vectoring bullets that can follow a curved trajectory?
Patent pending. Then straight to Kickstarter or the military. Either is good.
Pretty sure the military already has these.
As soon as you tell anybody about it, you can't patent it anymore.
I really wanted to see the fire destinguisher.
Also, I think this would work much better if you controlled it by moving the blaster. It would me more natural and you can see the blaster and drone in your vision at the same time for reference to create a positive feedback loop in your mind to get an accurate result.
It would probably be easier to control the direction if you turn using both yaw and roll together (move both left and right sticks horizontally together). This is what actual fpv drone pilots do as just turning on yaw(left stick) doesn’t change the direction the the drone moves in, only direction it faces.
You should try a GY-511 compass module, then you should be able to steer by turning your head instead of tilting, you'd also be able to control thrust by nodding/looking slightly up or down. Neat project and it's always fun to watch your builds come to life.
Loving the weekly content James. You're so creative and well organised! Something I'll definetly try and replicate in my studies
Thanks! This gave me so many smiles! I bet the chosen designer is dead chuffed that you made this
Almost 1 million subscribers. Congrats James! Lots of hard work put into this channel and so much to be proud of.
Should make one that uses eye tracking to steer the drone in the direction you're looking relative to the drone position. Pretty much it will try to fly directly where you're looking.
Would have been cool to see that extended shield! Perhaps a future video?
Keep the content coming :)
Aw, the fire extinguisher backpack was a significantly cooler idea.
"Yessss.... let the Fiverr flow through your veins!"
Wow! Very nice!! I would have prefer the fire extinguisher (more for the practical aspect and meaning of such wonderful idea). But very very nice! Those artists have great ideas!
I think it would be fun if instead of tilting, have the drone fly toward a point you are looking at. Like painting a target with a laser pointer.
Wow one word for this video
AMAZING!
There are a bunch of multiprotocol modules for those drones so you can use a proper radio with all the little toys. I appreciate banggood takes longer than a week to deliver though.
This was a great video! Love the process from concept to execution :)
Reminded me of the pen Yondu controls by whistling. Nice project!
Probably one of the best sponsorships ive seen, fits in with your style of videos
This is a pretty similar concept to Jlaservideo's Yondus arrow. Very neat how those little drones can handle that much weight
You are a very, VERY talented bloke, James.
What a great video 👏👏👏👏
Awesome proof of concept video and Fiverr is a great resource for finding talent if you have an idea and lack the skill or time to realize it.
Wonderful idea and execution! Well done!
I'd be very interested to see James tackle one of hotkoin's nerf blaster concepts
Agreed
you don't really want to use your head to directly steer the projectile. What you rather be doing is point your head (eye?) to the target and the drone/projectile shall readjust the course to the new target. I'm just not sure how you can use detection (vision?) for what you would be aiming for (with either your head or eyes), but I've seen before someone controlling a mouse on a pc with eye movements some years ago.
It would have been cool to use the navigation stack in Ros so that instead of just being controlled by your head it actually navigated to where your head was pointed using the IMU and a laser distance finder
That means tracking the actual position of the drone in space at all times and having the Navigation stack running fast enough to navigate at the velocity it travels at. I think this could be a more involved project ;-)
@@jamesbruton yes, I think it probably wouldn't fit in one sponsored video but it would be interesting and might help with the drone being hard to control with your head
If you really want to go the extra mile you need some sort of optic that can measure the distance to where you are looking and have the drone fly to where-ever you look autonomously xD
I love your work man, I have a question, can you do a video on how you got started in robotics and why you chose to make them? I've been watching your channel for about 6 years now and I'm really impressed
I lost it at the idea of "Fire Distinguisher' xd Would be way better if it didn't enable the extinguishers but would just say "yep, it's fire".
I'd love to see what the designer thought of your execution of their design
The eye piece reminds me of how the domminon ships are controlled in Star Trek deep space nine
If the drone had a modified headless mode, you could have it actually follow where you look.
Strafing the drone left, right, up, and down, as you look left, right, up, then down.
Would definitely need to tune how dramatically it strafes and climbs, and how fast forward it will travel.
A more natural rotation of the head.
Interesting concept. I would maybe recommend having a camera on the projectile and one on the headset that us machine learning to steer the drone towards what the camera on the headset is looking at. I know that would be super complicated/difficult to build though. nice job!
LOL James, very entertaining. Thanks!
That's impressive...and frightening
Add about four IR LEDs to the back of the drone. Then add an hour laser and probably a visible laser to the headpiece. Put an IR camera on the launcher or/and on the headpiece. Then use image recognition to find the drone in the frame and guide it to the laser dot. What you've got right now feels very unnatural because you're looking at the Target but you have to move away from the Target to get the drone to go towards the target. You need an additional feedback system so that the drone goes where you're looking. This could be that system. One last thing the further down range the drone gets the more gain there needs to be on correcting its position. This applies to both systems.
I love his inventions they are sooo cool
Why didn't you just disassembled the controller and wired the joysticks directly to an arduino
Cause its for an AD project :P
Titan rockets are slightly bigger ones, so they may he easier, and also the titan(unity power systems) is really powerful

AWESOME
Awesome, although you might end up with whiplash at some point. Would love to be a fly on the wall at the DR's whilst you explain what you was doing :D Also, I noticed your nearly at 1M for subscribers! Congrats
Always awesome!
Fix the altitude so the gun gives that initial input and then you only have to control left and right.
Also, as a variation you could have the headset send out a laser and a few cameras in the room that look for it and find its location in space and have the drone fly there.
And we are one step closer to the Borg XD
not that i dont like how you solved this problem but i think it would have been a bit cooler if you would have modified the vanes to change the direction of flight. but still a cool project 👌🏻
A supper hero with the thickest neck lol captain dizzy to tge rescue
oh, I would realy like to see the fire extinguisher thing!!! especially when you consider that you can also fill a fire extinguisher with other things to shout...
petrol... haha
This has been a blast(er)!
Have you done any videos on your lulzbots and printing workflow? Had a look and couldn't find any. Seems you have very consistent build quality, and the machines look awesome.
Hey @James Bruton, I have noticed that you have a separate Arduino connected to the IMU, why not have One Arduino board handle the IMU as well as Printing Serial information(among many other functions that you have programmed into the board)?
People in the comments seem to often talk about slightly stilted presentation of ad segments, but I'm pretty sure you've just got really dry humor!
That really long drumroll with the answer in the title made me laugh out loud
I recon you just needto crank up the sensitivity to make it easier stear. Maybe a few LEDs in the eye peace colud be used to give you feedback on your strearing commands, so that you don't feel the need to overstear.
you could make a lazer guided drone and a lazer beam in your eyepiece so you can follow a moving target.
Bloody Genius! XD
That designer's username though :joy:
I liked the shield idea more
this is coolest youtube channel i stg
Runaway. The movie everyone is suddenly thinking of from the '80s with the smart-bullets (and robot spiders) is called Runaway.
I thought about that movie, but I didn't expect many people to remember it!
@@jamesbruton That was one of the movies that got me interested in robotics as a kid, lol!
@@jamesbruton A few meme GIF's of it are circulating and people kinda remember the bullet chase scene. It's also a classic B-movie cheese fest so :D
@5:30 Mechanical control of the sticks seems a bit crazy.
You know that the controller on the inside probably just has potentiometers for the sticks?
AnalogueWrite from the microcontroller probably would have been good enough. You could also consider opto-isolating the microcontroller from the remote if there are different levels involved
It's really hard to get the pots out and generally destroys the remote.
You practically made the redeemer in Nerf style.
This was a great collab video. Yeah.. the designer should have chosen to use the blaster to steer the projectile and not the head sight...lol
Just make the launcher strap on to your forearm and move the motion thingy to the same arm and you got a rough version of the beetle item from skyward sword
Very good

I legit was thinking you were going to hack the drone and connect it to your main remote, but nope! you went the cooler direction and made a setup to control the controller, love it!
Who's the designer here; Fiverr freelancer was the ideas/concept man but you James are the design engineer! How about putting the steering electronics on the launcher.
looks fun :)
I will like to build this. great project.
Hi. I am working on a flying death blade for larping. The drone can lift the thing and it pretty much controls it self. Also it shuts down when it gets hit. What is exactly how I want it to be.
Maybe you could have used some i2c digital pots in place of the sticks instead of the janky servo thing.
why not make your head tilting up and down to control the altitude ? considering you've already done exactly the same thing for the tilt, it wouldn't be too hard to add + easier to control i think
You should control it through whistling. Works for Yondu at least :P
Well done, good fun.
Thanks!
thanks for putting the "#ad" hashtag on there. Not many youtubers have the courage to do so...
reminds me of the smart gun from the movie The 5th Element
