Fender American Pro II HSS vs. SSS | The Difference a Humbucker Makes

  • Today we're looking at a couple great Fender Stratocasters from the American Professional II series-- one of which has three single coils (SSS) and the other has 2 single coils and a humbucker (HSS). The addition of the humbucker adds a whole new sonic palette that is available to the Stratocaster, but is that tone right for you? Check out the demos and tell us what you think!

      Maybe just me, but hard to hear much discernible difference between the SSS bridge and the HSS coil tap. Wasn't a big fan of the SSS bridge/neck combo. Rather have the HSS for clean sounds in coil split bridge and the bucker for distortion as an option. Thanks for this, because you definitely helped me make up my mind. To me, Strats are all about positions 4 & 5 anyway. Now I have to play each before making a final decision. Great post!

    I've been playing an early Custom Shop Fender Strat SSS since the 1980s, when most people hadn't heard of the Custom Shop! I actually haven't had a guitar with a humbucker, except for my Jazz box, for quite some time. I have to say, the bridge pickup on this American Pro II does sound good both as a humbucker and as a single coil. Good balance between the pickups both as a humbucker and a single coil. Pretty impressive. The only problem is: the HSS Strat or the Tele Deluxe. That one is just killin' it, too.

      No joke… when I start up guitar lessons, I’m going to show my teacher a bunch of videos of Cooper and say “I want to play like that.” Playing punk rock isn’t difficult. But switching back and forth from chords to shreddy licks is quite a talent and I while I wouldn’t do that when writing songs meant for a full band, it’s great to help you know when and where to throw in some spice during a song. Killer playing, Cooper.

    The neck is what makes this a Cadillac for me. Substantial, but comfortable.

    What make specifically the American Pro and Pro II awesome for HSS is that the humbucker only sees 500k pots, while the single coils have 250k ones, through some interesting design by Fender. This removes one of the main inherent issues with HSSs (sc fit better with 250 and humbuckers with 500).

    I use to get the HSS models by default. Then I got my first custom shop and wanted it to be traditional so I got my first SSS. What I found was I could get the same sound out of the SSS with different settings on my amp and pedals. SO if all you have is single coils, then the SSS is the more diverse and the better sounding option IMO. But if you mix Les Pauls or other Humbucker guitars the HSS will fit a lot better in your rig. But a Humbucker Strat does not replace or sound like a Les Paul, it sounds like a Strat with a Humbucker. The noiseless are a nice middle ground, a stacked Humbucker voiced like a single coil.

    Fender don’t offer HSS in left-handed orientation, other than the occasional custom shop. I recently bought 3 lefty Fender Mexican Player Strats and have modded them as HSS, HSH and HH. Upgraded the wiring to handle the new pickups, plus added Graphtec nut and stringtree, switchcraft jack socket and Fender locking tuners. Used Fender Shawbuckers to better match the Fender single coil on the HSH. A company called Freeway offer a great 10 position blade switch (5B5-01 for SSS and 5B5-02 for HSS/HSH) which gives five further pickup options above the 5 standard positions. I used push/pull coil splits on the HH which gives 8 pickup options. Great Video as usual, You guys are so entertaininng and full of knowledge. Those two guitars are beautiful. Cooper, you are an amazing guitarist, you can sure fly up and down a fretboard with so much ease. . I really look forward to your videos and "Thank You" so much. I have a few good guitars and am trying to learn at an older age, it is harder for me my fingers don,t move fast any more, LOL I have no problem reccomending Alamo to any of my friends because of your great videos. keep up the fantastic job you are doing!

    I bought the HSS Pro ll because I like the versatility of having the optional tone of a humbucker pickup and also being able to split it to a single coil, which is the traditional Strat set up. As Chris said “it’s the best of both worlds”.

    Great video guys as usual, excellent playing from Cooper, I was on the fence which Strat to buy, I already have a ‘91 SSS but was open to a more modern incarnation but I’m now convinced an HSS is the way to go for me, so Miami blue with a rosewood board it is!

      I also am seriously considering the miami blue /rosewood HSS....but have you noticed, on some sites, like sweetwater...some of the miami blue's look very "blue", and some other ones look sort of dark seafoam greenish?? the differences are very obvious. not sure if there are variations with this finish, or if it is due to lighting, etc.....i def like the blue look, and not the ones with the slightly greenish hue

    Your playing (which is fantastic btw) got more aggressive when you switched to that final bridge/humbucker position in the hss demo. This, alone, is a testament to the hss model if you want to straddle that SRV meets Hendrix line during searing leads. I love my sss but I’m really missing that sustain and depth that you get from the bridge humbucker. And yes I have a few humbucker guitars, for the purists lol
    This was a great demo. I’ve now decided to sell some gear for that hss.

    Is a cheaper Squier Classic Vibe HSS worth it or HSS is only good with an expensive and quality Fender?

  • @iancurrie8844
    @iancurrie8844 Před 9 měsíci

    It’s an interesting concept from fender. With this “double tapping” there’s really no need for singles at all.
    But then, there’s no need for brass saddles which don’t allow intonation on individual strings. I guess we do things for reasons other than “need” sometimes.

  • @treishtrei
    @treishtrei Před 4 měsíci +1

    seems that the neck pickup (yes neck, not bridge) sounds slightly different in HSS vs SSS configs. The SSS neck has more sweetness, and I could only associate that on the magnetic pull of the humbucker being stronger (thus affecting negatively the harmonics)

    AAAH! Get out of my head! I'd just been contemplating Am Pro II / Ultra / HSS / SSS.
    Given that the difference between these two is the bridge pickup, I'd like to have seen more time focussed just on demo'ing the difference of the bridges and combinations (positions 1 and 2, and either split and humbucking or with and without the neck added in, as the case might be).
    What I really want for the tonal versatility prize is both options in one guitar: HSS with the nicely balanced coil split demo'd here, plus another push-push to add in the neck, as on the SSS version. Have to study the 5-way wiring diagram, I guess.
    SSS bridge: 13:36
    HSS bridge: 15:51
    HSS coil split: 16:04
