Why Did American Airlines Cancel Its Airbus A350 Order?

- Back at the beginning of 2018, American Airlines decided to cancel an order for 20 Airbus A350s. This was a bit of a surprise, as the order had been on the books since 2005. So what was the reason for this order cancellation? And was it the right move for the carrier?

Those Airbus a350 delivery slots are so valuable. For American Airlines to just give up those a350 delivery slots and have to go to the back of the line for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner would mean American Airlines takes much longer to modernize their fleet.
They should have kept their A350 after delivery until they got their 787s, then sold their A350s.
Smart people, really smart. The same ones that said they would go to Airbus and get A320/A321s before everyone else in line...
Did you even watch the video?
No, of course you didn’t, because otherwise you would’ve known the order was for the A350-800 variant, which Airbus canceled and has no plans to resurrect. American had no need of the larger -900 or -1000, and the 787-10 was the only other aircraft in the segment.
Same reason Delta cancelled the 787 order.
They’re buying more Airbus A350s and their also adding the MAX 10 to the fleet. They mad the smart choice with canceling the 787 order for A35ks
The Max10's are probably part of the cancellation deal.
@@paulroling1781 it all depends on Boeing. Delta is now expected to start receiving MAX 10s in 2027
@@PlaneSpotterRVer314given Boeing track record, the 2027 is contingent on no more crashes and/or other questions around the type's air worthiness
@@jpazinhoit’ll definitely be fixed by 2027. Quality control doesn’t take 3 years to fix.
American Airlines should have not have cancelled the A350 order
Airlines don’t listen to what people want. You wanna complain, go straight to their head office
😂
Why do you feel this way?
@filledwithvariousknowledge2747 He isn't complaining lmao😂😭💀
"A350 without the mask doesn't exist, it cant hurt you"
A350 without the mask: 0:02
Oh god what the hell??
Hi
US Air merged with America West Airlines, not American West
American has done the same thing that United did. They both ditched the A350 and are going towards buying more 787s which in my opinion they should have both kept their A350 orders. The A350s would have benefited their long haul routes even more and they could even put the A350 on their longest of routes but they both decided to cancel.
They should have kept them and crossed crewed them
@@terrysidhu1078 instead both airlines chose the 787
The a350 is too big and less efficient.
@@CineZoneYT actually the A3)0 is way more efficient than the 787. The Rolls Royce Trent engines is has are the most efficient engines on any jet today
@@PlaneSpotterRVer314 They are efficient on the a350 because they are underpowered 🤣. Airbus is always making their planes underpowered, which is why Delta and Ethiopian are both having problems with the a350 takeoff performance.
Delta was the wisest of the legacies.
Hi simple flying
They will regret canceling this order.
They hardly lose any sleep over it and haven’t in years in fact
@@filledwithvariousknowledge2747boeing hasnt been ignoring safety years ago

America West, not “American West”.
This was in early 2018, so several months before the start of the Boeing saga. Which no one knew it would happen.
NO, Boeing Senior Management and Board KNEW it could happen just hopefully after they took retirement?
@@trevorhart545he definitely means nobody in the public…
and now all the 787s are delayed and their summer plans are shot
American themselves pushed back delivery of their 787s. That was their decision, there’s a video on this page about it.
Getting aircraft parts from out of country can become expensive with duty charges and taxes compared to getting them from Seattle.
Boeing really has to get their act together, just looking at the Airbus commonality cockpit lay out and how fast pilots can be cross trained after initial type certification across Airbus families . If American has enough 787 in their fleet and does not need it good for them
Must have been the politicians getting involved.
No it was not!
Others became happy!
American will eventually need the A350 to replace older 777 aircraft
They’re already looking at the 777X for their older 777 replacements
@@hectorguillen6357will take years. Their future plans for routes existing and new routes up in flames. Cancelling A350 order makes no business sense.
American will replace its 777-200 fleet with 787-9s. Although the 787-10 is it’s directl replacement
@@hectorguillen6357 Still BLIND?
@@LordPanda-wz9oqthey are replacing their older 200ERs with 787s and the 300ERs wouldn’t need replacing until at least the early 2030s. The decision made the most sense for American bc they were trying to reduce the number of models within their fleet. And it worked, their aircraft maintenance costs have come down even though their fleet has grown.
B787 is cheaper BUT with unknown flaws that will be discovered in the near future......
All the Airbus fanboys are angry. I also like Airbus but gosh the comments are hateful towards American, it’s their choice and that’s it. The a350 had already got enough orders for its sake.
You should’ve seen the Boeing fanboys angry at delta for ordering Airbus in the first place.
They got their marching orders.
stubborn loyalty basically
In SALES = CASH COWS or MUGS
Where is cathay pacific
🤔Bargain are Bargain, Airbus and Boeing under pressure!!⚠️all are about DISCOUNTS ...Delta and 787, remember.
they should have just gone with the a350
Airline CEOs spend the best part of 2 years deciding what new planes to order only for some CZcams armchair CEO Fanboy to complain that they they have ordered the wrong aircraft
So true 💯
For real
I was expecting some analysis on this video but it left it up for the comments. Sad.
well it will fun fly on AmericanAirlines a350.
Yes they should have kept the A350 orders.
They might choose 777X
yes if he flies one day !!!!
Deliveries starting next year@@calou0165
@@calou0165he will fly, just like every other aircraft program gets delayed, so did the 777X. Luckily, Americans doesn’t need any widebody capacity at the moment.
I think it is good that some American airlines focus on buying mostly American planes.
Because they don’t like products that are good like the product they offer on their planes
Life in rural Ukrainian
I know I might get some slack for saying this. If you look at the history of choices that U.S. military made in some planes and fighter jets, they let some real good stuff past them by. I'm not surprised they did this. The history still lives on
I wonder why airbus dropped the A350-800
To make the A330neo
I would imagine they are regretting that decision now, particularly with the continued delays with the modified 777 but at least they can stay with the 787 in the meantime.
20/20 Yep, they should have kept them...787's delayed...again....
Now United are constantly deferring
the a350 is so much better than the 787 in almost every way. i dont even trust boeing anymore so they should’ve kept the order
Uh… ok.. sure
I wouldn't go that far with the plastic
More comfortable too
The a350 is less advanced and less efficient.
Yes, I think they should've followed through. Since American Airlines retired its fleet of A330s in 2020, originally placed by US Airways, its widebody fleet consists of only Boeing aircraft; which could be problematic because of the profits>safety crisis, government oversight, quality control issues, and more which could lead to delays and affect safety; which is now much worse since the airline canceled the A350 order originally by US Airways. What was the point if Airbus had to send one of their A350s to fly over American's headquarters all those years ago?
Agree with American decision.
Yea, you would. Typical american
Those cancelled A350 orders must have been lookin' really nice now
Why would they? American recently pushed back their 787 deliveries (there’s a video on this page about it) because they don’t need any new wide bodies at the moment.
In hindsight, with the 787 Dreamliner quality and safety issues on people's minds, and the large backlog of orders in the industry; yes, they should have kept the A350 orders
I bet they regret it now.
They definitely don’t. They recently deferred deliveries of 787s because they said they don’t need any more widebody capacity at the moment.
first
i have seen you on my edits lol
Oh American and United, no Airbus widebody’s PERIOD.
Their choice
@@filledwithvariousknowledge2747 Yeah, I know, I was just stating that they don’t have Airbus wide body’.
"supply chain resilience"

not in practice....
For the same reason no American carriers bought the A380…
Political reasons.
So maybe you can explain how Delta, JetBlue, American, United, Spirit, Frontier, and Hawaiian all have large Airbus fleets? Same government, same politics. Your comment does not make sense.
The same reason NOBODY is buying A380s
Uh huh. Sure. Must be politics, even though all 3 carriers also didn’t buy any 747-8s either.
The real reason is that American broke down and took advice from Nicky Oliver. 👀
They chose to be patriotic over safer Airbus planes I guess. Now not only are the wheels coming off, doors and slides too!
Then why are they worlds largest A320 family operator?! *Explain that loser*
That’s why they have ordered over 500 narrowbody aircraft from Airbus in the last 2 decades huh? I swear you guys just say goofy stuff 😂
I liked US Airways but they merged too many times and American gobbled them up and ruined the brand.
Politics come to mind
So maybe you can explain how Delta, JetBlue, American, United, Spirit, Frontier, and Hawaiian all have large Airbus fleets? Same government, same politics. Your comment does not make sense.
Mistake
It's American's loss, GO Airbus!
It's airbus loss , the customer doesn't lose.
Because murica
American airlines is definitely the worst US carrier. They have zero diversity in their fleet, they barely even flew the 747.
AM AIRLINES has cheap poor quality BOEING. So it will not invest in good quality safe A350
