  • Jon Snow spent the build up to the funeral wandering amongst the crowds who lined these streets earlier this morning. I met some protestors who turned their backs - and some Tory faithful.

Neither Thatcher nor the Queen are leaders I look up to in terms of their privilege and their colonialist beliefs and actions. But a person's funeral, that ones death, his or her grave is not something one dances upon. Walk away in silence; let your absence be your protest, but allow every human and those who loved them the dignity of their funeral rights--regardless of their political histories. Silence is stronger than losing ones own humanity in celebrating the death of another.

    • @TheGamingVillas

She supported apartheid. She devastated workers. She's responsible for the deaths of countless individuals. There is no humanity in that unisex bathroom you call Margaret Thatcher. Oh but to you, the ever so high and mighty, there is a non-zero amount of people a politician can kill and not lose all your respect. Which to me is more a circlejerk than a moral flex but you do you I guess.

@@Eggmanjames never been to the north of England have you? Or Welsh mining communities? Or most of Scotland? Or Catholic communities in Northern Ireland? She caused mass unemployment, destroyed families and communities in England, destroyed a way of life in Wales, funded killing in Northern Ireland, hurt many communities in Scotland. She was responsible for death and hardships and knew it.
Why do people at the age of 20s in the 80s hate her? There could get no jobs after Uni because she destroyed them. People were struggling. Why does the North of England hate her? In mining towns it’s because their entire way of life was destroyed and when they asked for support they were beaten by the police she sent in. The rest had to live off food banks as they struggled to find money. People were suffering and she knew it. The same happened in Wales and Scotland. In Scotland there was also the nuclear waste and weapons she tried to dump up there and poll tax especially.
In Northern Ireland it’s the fact she funded terrorists in their neighbourhood.
People don’t hate her cause they wanna. They hate her because the scar she left is still there.

@@Eggmanjames The 'now' is inevitably affected by the past. Margaret Thatcher was a deeply divisive woman, and whilst closing the mines was not a bad thing in the long-term, the manner in which she did it was deeply harmful for Northern communities which took decades to return to prosperity if indeed they have yet.
Harold Wilson's Labour government closed more mines than Thatcher but he is not protested because he worked with unions to ensure a transition which wouldn't cause rampant unemployment.
Many people very understandably feel a lot of anger towards her, especially when her supporters are so indignant and righteous about the entire thing.
You asked for evidence as for why she was a witch. I will attempt to provide my biggest gripe with her on the day of her funeral. She was responsible for huge slashes to public spending - she cut 70% from the education budget in her first term, she privatised industry to make way for shopping centres that are now failing and yet in the end, she proved that it was one rule for us and not them. She had her funeral bankrolled by the public at huge cost which was disgraceful, shameful and truly disgusting.
