I’m so happy you are reacting to Mamamoo’s IS2 performances! I’m also continuously in tears rewatching these performances. I’ve been thinking for a long time about what makes these so special. I think it comes down to a few factors:
    (1) Mamamoo are a supreme cover band. They can make any song their own. If they didn’t have their own discography they’d still be pretty amazing as cover artists. They have a sort of classic-entertainer style of performance, with choreo that’s fun and exciting and always seems fresh. It’s somewhat different from the more usual K-pop style with elaborate synchronized choreo that requires refined skills and practice of a different kind. Mamamoo’s early choreo style is designed to engage with live audiences. They work the crowd so well.
    (2) Their music producers, primarily their CEO Kim Do-Hoon but with other key people in the team, are extremely competent and imaginative. These IS2 performances are 5-6 minutes long, as compared to the usual 3-4 minutes of a typical song in their discography. This gives the arrangements space to go through multiple change-ups and develop the drama through peaks and quiet lulls to a powerful climax. Especially important is that they are writing these arrangements specifically for Mamamoo, knowing that these four women have the skills to deliver complex and powerful music.
    (3) All four members have key roles. Moonbyul wrote completely new raps for most of these performances, to songs that never had them, and she makes them fit as if they were always meant to be there. Who would dare to write two rap sections to a song as well known as Delilah? Moonbyul dares, and she doesn’t hold back in the words or the delivery. The other three have such a rich range of vocal skills, not just technical skills but emotional delivery. There is no one person who is the weakest. You can find vocal rankings out there, measured using reasonable technical criteria for singers, but those rankings do not capture the full story of what these women can do with live microphones in their hands.
    (4) These are some of the best songs in classic Korean popular music. K-pop groups all have their own discographies, with excellent and sometimes incredible music, but for IS2 they are selecting from the best of the best, songs that have lasted years and have affected listeners of all ages.
    (5) The audiences are the best. Their sincere reactions bring home the sincere power of the performances: wistfully mouthing the lyrics, dancing excitedly in the aisles, staring wide-eyed in wonderment, screaming with joy… it’s all there. Look out for one woman with bangs and long hair who seems to be in almost all of these early IS2 performances. I think she is an “audience visual”, meaning that the camera editors pick her out quite often for cutaway shots. What a dedicated and lucky Moomoo to see so many of these live performances!
    (6) There are also some lovely reactions from the original artists and also the other performers in the studio (although some of those can come across as a bit artificial, because it’s seasoned performers seemingly reacting to the camera landing on them). My favourite is Wendy from Red Velvet looking on admiringly as Mamamoo harmonize in their performance of Backwoods. The two groups have a close and wholesome relationship.
    (7) Mamamoo at this stage were working incredibly hard to build their reputation, as the new group in a small company that had very little budget. They put together each of these performances in very short time, and they could do it because they were hungry and skilled and had been working very very hard and very very closely together during their training years and their early post-debut months. IS2 was their pathway into the hearts of the Korean general public, and they knew it and they made it count. It’s really sad to see some of their interviews at the time, when different members talk about how they didn’t feel that they met the expected beauty standards and had to make up for it by developing their performance skills. It’s heartbreaking, but they certainly did develop those performance skills.

They certainly are special. Thinking about their struggles and how they worked things out makes me tear up sometimes. I enjoyed your very detailed explanation of what makes them special and unique. Thank you. I was wondering if RV and MMM performed against each other and you answered my question. I think I mentioned that Wendy looked familiar, but it didn't click. Dummy me, especially since I just did the RV IS2 czcams.com/video/WspwCs8dY9M/video.html reaction.

I only had time to watch two songs this morning. Gotta run but I'll watch the others later after a comment about Delilah. Delilah was the 2nd MMM song I heard after Piano Man and it turned me into an instant moomoo.
Delilah was their cover of the Korean version of the Tom Jones hit from the 60's. The K-version was edited to avoid censorship. In the original version a guy knifes his cheating girlfriend and then begs her to forgive him before the cops show up. The K-version drops reference to the knifing. Mamamoo turned it into a lesbian crime of passion without batting an eye and with no trace of irony. The guy seen repeatedly catching flies was the original Korean singer who was being honored in this episode of Immortal Songs. His stunned look was because he couldn't wrap his head around the gender and sexuality switch. Moonbyul wrote a new rap verse for Delilah because of course the original song pre-dated rap. Check out a performance by Tom Jones to see how MMM radically altered the arrangement. As an old fart who is very familiar with the Tom Jones version my mind was blown by what Mamamoo brought to the song. My first coherent thought was Who are these girls and why aren't they global superstars? Still don't have an answer for the 2nd question. Mamamoo didn't win for any of these performances. See you later!

@@_KpopAjumma_ He might well have been a bit tipsy. Haven't watched that episode in years - can't find the old full show vids on yt anymore - but as I recall besides commenting that he never would have expected the song to be done by a girl group he also made fun of Mamamoo's name.
I don't know who did the spectacular arrangement but I think it was probably a collab between Kim Dohoon and MMM. A couple of the new instrumental choices I really liked were the guitar doing House of the Rising Sun style arpeggios at the beginning and then quoting from Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez during the countdown before Moonbyul's rap verse.

I've seen their performances to many times to count yet I still get goosebumps when I see or hear them performed. One of the artist that also performed the day Mamamoo covered The Way to Sampo couldn't believe Hwasa was only 19 (2 months from 20th b-day) Mamamoo are more than idols, they are artists. After getting rejected many time for various, in my opinion dumb reasons, I'm glad RBW took them in. Hard choreography and catchy beats might be the focus at the moment, but, in the long run, vocals will always win. They were the first K-pop group I saw live in concert, and let me tell you, the bar was set high for me.
I don't know if you already did, but, can you check out EXO?( Vocal King, and also Emperors of Kpop) Specifically the Immortal Song episode where Chen and Baekhyun sang "Really I Didn't know."

They didn't win any of the shows, but they won several rounds and made the final round with the first song, and they won one round with the last. Wheein always commented about how they failed miserably when they didn't win any rounds, but quite a few idol groups have made multiple appearances on the show without ever winning a round. During covid, they went to judges but prior to that, each member of the 500 in the audience had a voting device and after each performance, they could either push their button or not. After the first two acts, they would reveal which had the higher number of votes, then the third act would perform and they would reveal if they had scored higher than the previous round winner, and so on through the seven acts to a final winner. I remember an act or two winning a show in the high 300's and the record high score was pushing 450 last I knew. The order of performance is random and early performers rarely win through to the final.

@@_KpopAjumma_ I have listened to a number of complete shows and it's often a mystery to me. As a non-Korean, I usually don't know the original song or how much it's loved by the audience. I remember seeing a show where two different acts wanted to perform the same song and apparently the discussion became a little heated. For Mamamoo's first appearance where they made the final before losing, the winner was a rock star from the 90's who had appeared on Koreas version of dancing with the stars. He brought his dance partner from that show on, and ballroom danced through his act. The sentimentality of that coupled with the fact that Mamamoo had performed earlier, and their performance was no longer fresh in the minds of the audience had to make a difference. I think Mamamoo was better but I'm biased and I wasn't there and I'm not part of the culture. Imagine the impact it would have had if Mamamoo won on their first appearance. On a later show you haven't gotten to yet, Mamamoo once again made the finals and lost to a soloist who performed beautifully and was a trained ballerina. She incorporated point dance in her act and won by 2 or 3 votes. All of the acts are good and there are many factors that affect the vote.
