Pretty in Pink's ambience always felt like a bridge between John Hughes's earlier films and Cameron Crowe's later films to me. Glad you mentioned Say Anything, I definitely noticed their similar aspect as well. Great movies.

My parents took me to see this when I was 8 years old, at my insistent urging. The line was around the block of the movie theater, all 16 year old girls with AquaNetted hair and big earrings, all talking fast & over each other like how I would be about 8 years later. It's been my favorite 80s movie to this day. LOVE IT. First time I would have ever seen Harry Dean Stanton onscreen and I've adored him ever since (no matter the role he plays and that man's been in a TON of movies). Of course I would not have caught any Jane references or themes back then but now I see it!

Great review. The Austen references are spot on. Keep up the great work!

I think Pretty In Pink is the one Hughes/80's/Ringwald/Bratpack/Teen movie that has/will stood the test of time. I know a lot of people for whom this is one of their very favorite films. Maybe because it's basically Cinderella? That story has had legs!

just watched this move for the first time. it does feel pretty timeless, yet also at times has has a retro cyberpunk vibe. what are your thoughts on girl interrupted? would love to see a review on that!

My daughter had a crush on the Ducky character.

Ducky was afraid of the future and immature which made him a poor choice as a love interest as she could plainly see with her father - although they were both kind hearted.
I always remember MR's line about the people in the beautiful houses not appreciating them. She was criticizing ingratitude - not wealth. They don't make many movies today that give respect to middle class aspirations. A healthy culture aspires to greater things. Even her beatnik record store friend at the end finds a wholesome man with whom to potentially settle down. Would love to see you review the Whit Stillman trilogy of movies. Subscribed.

It's such a sweet and fun movie.
To me it's 8, maybe even 9 out of 10.
I've seen some people ctiricising the very ending, for Andie not choosing Duckie.
To those I highy recommend Some Kind Of Wonderful, the second John Hughes and Howard Deutch movie, which is sort of a gender swap Pretty In Pink.
It's very good as well :)
