- Finding a big Japanese community in a foreign country is not always easy, compared to other Asian cultures, such as Chinese and Korean.
A couple of such places are Bangkok and Los Angeles, which are known for being cities that have a lot of Japanese residents.
When it comes to Europe, the German city of Düsseldorf is actually home to one of the largest Japanese communities in the continent.
I visited Düsseldorf the other day so in this video I’m going to share what I, a Japanese guy, experienced in the biggest “Little Tokyo” in Europe.

Germany and Japan has a similar industrious, engineering and technology focussed culture. Many Germans admire Japan.
You really see a big difference when you are accustomed to local culture. But, it is really appreciated to see this in other countries. Nice video content Wes!!!
It always feels good when you find the food or culture that you're used to in a foreign country:)
You do such an incredible job of showing off various parts of each area that you visit! Love seeing your content, thank you for making it
Düsseldorf also celebrates a JapanDay once a year. There are many booths near the river Rhine and many cosplayers.
That sounds so fun!
@@NomadicWes it is
Very informative, great editing, love it. Thanks for the video.
Very informative video and you seem like a very nice guy ! Thank you so much :)
As always another great video Wes!😊👍
Thank you!😎
Thanks for sharing!
really helpful as i plan to visit various japanese shops and restaurants 😍 especially the manga shop
Awesome trip, cool that you were able to experience some nostalgia outside of your country. :D
I bought so many Japanese groceries lol
Thank you for your review.❤
Excellent video as usual, learned something new too
Thank you!
Great Video Sir :) best regards from bayreuth, Germany
I literally had no idea that there is a large Japanese community in Dusseldorf and they even have a festival, so cool! What is the main thing (dish or food item) that you miss when you are outside of Japan?
Well mainly good Japanese food haha
I've been craving for sukiyaki lately
Yes, did you know that almost every year, over 600,000 people attend this festival? It's amazing, I have attended for two years in a row
Very good tour! Well done
I think you would like Düsseldorfs Japan Day and the Dokumi (Germanys largest Anime and Japan expo)
The price for the Ramen was extremly high compared to the Restaurants here in Berlin that i know.
It was the most expensive ramen on the menu and I also ordered some drinks but yes it was still expensive😅
They have ramen in the 12-15 euro range as well in Düsseldorf. Ofcourse it's still more than in Japan and you don't get the specials but it doesn't have to be expensive. It is actually pretty cheap compared to the Netherlands or Belgium were that 12-15 euro ramen costs 20 euro.
As a german living close to Düsseldorf, who often goes there for "Little Tokyo" its super interesting to see a japanese guy visit it and talk about it in english. I agree that the ramen is pretty expensive, sadly it costs you arround 25-30 bucks to go somewhere and eat there... going out here is pretty expensive... :c
Im happy you seemed to enjoy your trip tho!
I wish you went to Nord Park to the Japanese garden and to the EKO Haus Japanese temple in duesseldorf! It's worth it and I guarantee it will feel like Japan. In düsseldorf there is even a japanese kindergarten for japanese immigrants whose parents work at japanese companies here.
Thank you!🙏 Very good. 😃
I miss Japan, I went for 3 weeks last year and those were really the best 3 weeks of my life! But really cool video (:
If you want to try really good japanese ramen in germany, you have to go to Ramen-Jun in Frankfurt!!! Its so good and Frankfurt is really worth a visit :)
Oh no I was in Frankfurt a few weeks ago. I wish I had already known that back then🥲
Never visit Frankfurt! It's a really dangerous place, go rather to Hamburg, because it's way more tolerant and kinder.
Well made vido once again; thank you!
Thank you for watching!
I live in germany and I didn't know that. Thanks for tip. Can't wait to eat ramen for the first time
I didn’t even know that there is a large Japanese community in Düsseldorf, even so I’m from Germany lol. But I never been to Düsseldorf so that might be the reason.
Although it's my hometown I still learned some new things watching this video😄👍
Exactly what I was looking for ❤️❤️❤️
Just hope you could add the location of the places you visit there that was more like Japan with tons of japanese people.
I would've personally recommended visiting Takumi in Düsseldorf in terms of either Ramen or Curry. Nice vid
Why didn't you go to takumi? There now is even takeichi (from tokyo) in Düsseldorf. They opened two ramen restaurant and one yakitori one
I think you would have gotten a better Ramen at Takumi. It's the closest to authentic Ramen from Japan. But it also depends on which kind of Ramen you are choosing. The quality of the different soup stocks can differ extremely! Sometimes it takes time to find your favorite flavor.
Oh they have a good umaimon ramen there, i used to eat it in amsterdam, but i heard it was from there
Next time around try Ramen at Takumi, they offer the best Ramen in town.
It's not really affordable that's right, but I believe they maybe change the the tast of the ramen a little because you're in Germany, we don't use that much heavy flavours😅 but I'm from Düsseldorf and therefore I'm often in little tokyo 🤗
True, it's really Japanese Town in Europe. Want to see your barbershop where you had your hair cut. BTW, is there any reason why there are so many Japanese in Dusseldolf?
The salon is called Salon Ichigo!
It seems like a lot of Japanese companies and people gather here because of the city's great location for business in Europe
Does anyone know where I can buy best Matcha in Europe? I miss that taste after I got back from Japan and nothing available at Polish cafes comes close to Japanese matcha..
Great haircut Wes! And great content as always! You said the workers in the ramen shop were Japanese. Were they immigrants themselves or descendants?
Thank you! They looked quite young so I guess they were students or on working holiday
Good Video, you don't really see many Japanese caring about Germany, most of the times it's the other way around
Sorry, Düsseldorf isn't 40 minutes away from Cologne. Cologne is 40 minutes away from Düsseldorf.
😂
go to aachen, there are a lot of japanese and japanese shops etc.
Aachen is an ugly city though
@@ThomasF95DUS maybe
Izakaya are actually not that rare. I would say they come third after Sushi and Ramen restaurants, followed by okonomiyaki places. We have several in Berlin despite the number of Japanese people living here being very small.
Wow that's great. I'm in Berlin now so maybe I can try one of them
@@NomadicWes After checking again, the okonomiyaki restaurant seems to have been replaced with another Takumi branch, unfortunately.
There are also places specialising in yakiniku, 懐石, Japanese style crêpes, kakigoori plus a couple cafés serving breads and/or pastries. I guess something interesting could be among them.
Geez, €30 for ramen seems slightly expensive, especially if the quality wasn't great....nice haircut btw, Wes😁
Haha thank you!
Sadly everybody is missing that Japan most use gen mod products so I guess a more natural taste isnt recognized anymore
How do you make the money to travel
Japanese food is always expensive in Germany. But most of them are good.
❤❤
So cute…
One good thing about Bangkok is that we are having vast choices of independent Japanese restaurants with quite reasonable price.
I've been to Little Japan in Paris (Rue Sainte-Anne) during my trip in Europe and found it to be reliable place for dinner during my time there.
Yess Bangkok is one of the most convenient foreign cities for Japanese to live in
I like Japanese people. You are good people.
Are you based in Germany?
Such a cute looking guy.
You so cute 🥰
1:47 brabus g class wtf
In my impression, Korean Japanese like to live in Germany, not ethnic Japanese. And at the same time, they like to criticize Germany.Love and hate.Ethnic Japanese are more indifferent to Germany.
日本人はそこに住んでいるの?
I’ve got an instinctual suspicion anytime Germany and Japan come together for anything 🤔
Oh man.. don't say so.. the world is in peace right now.. 😅😅😅😅
Excuse me Sir/Madam
Are you saved?
