- Is USC football coach Lincoln Riley on the Hot Seat in 2024? Or is it just lukewarm? Some are suggesting this is a make or break year for Riley and USC football. He just got there and his QB won a Heisman!

It sounds crazy but crazier things have happened in college football. We will explore the pros and cons of where Lincoln Riley and his college football program are right now. And we are still surprised he left the comfy confines of Oklahoma where he became a bit of a Heisman quarterback whisperer. Then he followed that up by coaching Caleb Williams to a Heisman trophy in his first year at Troy. But a 19-8 record over two years has some people getting itchy. We will tell you who and what we think about them.

OU fans know all too well the pain of watching Lincoln flop. Especially in that playoff where LSU humiliated us. Riley is good as OC but not cut out for head. USC fans got sold a bill of goods on Licoln, I'm glad OU upgraded to Venables.

Paul Finebaum is full of $hit. He needs to focus on the SEC. LR is rebuilding, hasn’t been perfect but he’s on the right track. ✌🏾
Finebaum is a joke; let him keep ɓroadcasting the Mediocre SeC; LSU struggled big time last season with a poor defense & has lost alot of Key players offensively & defensively; Alabama not what they once were & are rebuilding with Saban Gone....Georgia is the only consistant & good team....

This take is Clickbait from Finebaum, who is a blow hard and lacks the insight/connections into SC to have inside information. SC fans are frustrated but he is not on the hot seat at this point. Given his new D staff, which is stellar, there is a good chance of progress on that side of the ball (especially on the back end. They are thin on the Dline, but not discussed as much is being thin/inexperienced on the Oline (RT) which could have a more significant impact on the season. They win 9 games and fans will still be frustrated but it will calm down. They do need to get their NIL fixed or all the fantastic recruiting coaches have been doing will continue to be undermined.
I'm a NE fan. I doubt Riley is on the hotseat. I look forward to seeing USC play in the Big Ten.
The man had a defense ranked 116th, below LA Tech and Western KY, and he's back for another season. And that's down from 106th the year before. He's in no danger.
Diehard OU fan here. I heard from LR every single year that he was rebuilding the D. “We are so close” or “We are just one or two players away”. He still says all of the same stuff at SC. Get used to it. It won’t change. He’s an offensive genius. Should be the best OC in the country, not a head coach. And he IS afraid of the SEC. Of that, there is no question. To believe otherwise is just from being a biased fan.

Its took Dabo 6/7 years to win one...then another. Freeman has to win this year, but if ND goes 10-2...we won't fire him. Its juts means he has a lower ceiling than we thought. But I see what you mean.

Thanks for your thoughtful insights into this Craig. The one thing that has changed dramatically is USC's Defensive Coaching staff. Compared to what we have had in recent years, this is a Dream Team of defensive coaching talent. If we are able to field at least a competent defensive team, then we should be able to compete without embarrassing ourselves as in previous years! Thanks for what you do. There is a difference between the rational argument you make about whether LR should be on the hot seat, versus how fans respond. SC is thirsty for a return to the glory days, and shelling out $110M+ for a coach, even though it's not "their" money, makes fans demand results - NOW! If SC loses 5 games this season I believe you will hear talk of a buyout of his contract.

Guarantee they didn’t address their defensive weaknesses. They are in trouble playing in the B1G, I’m sure they’ll win some games but they won’t win more than 9
Riley will have a 70 million buy at the end of the season and then get another high dollar coach . And don’t the 20 million the players are getting. Riley’s fault was keeping the GRINCH . Riley will be around for a while
SC went all in on him, they're kinda married for a while. He said he plans to retire young, and he just has to win enough to avoid getting fired to play out that plan. If he really flops hard, yeah, then the seat is red hot. But I doubt that will happen. The BIG 10 is a tougher league for sure, but they'll also have to adapt to his offense and that will be new to the league as well. I don't expect a spectacular crash and burn. More like a slow decline like he had going at OU after he inherited the program from Stoops. As an OU fan it sucked when he left at midnight, strip mining the program on his way out. But I think most OU fans are happy now that we were spared the long ugly divorce over several years. If you think about it from his stated career goal, he made the big $ move young while his reputation was high to a blue blood program sorta desperate for revival. Close observers of OU coulda told SC the prom queen might have a creeping STD, but SC wasn't in the mood to listen and scoffed at all the red flags

Fools...All off season, fools have talked so negatively about Lincoln Riley. But these same fools said that he should have won a National Championship in his 2nd year at USC. So how is it a coach who has Championship expectations also the same coach, who essentially can't coach? 🤔

Hoping Riley stays at USC. Nobody in the B1G wants to see a strong USC. Riley will hold them back and keep them mediocre.

PAC-12 was pretty darn tough last year, which was a problem for USC. I anticipate USC having about the same record this year -- somewhat better D from better coaching (still don't have the beef up front), but a somewhat worse O.
USC's single biggest problem going forward is ... Oregon. There's a reason they were absolutely opposed to Oregon coming to the B1G; Oregon takes too many quality guys from California, and is going to continue to beat USC out for key portal guys (e.g., USC _really_ needed guys ike Jamaree Caldwell and Derrick Harmon).

This is a great show, I think USC won’t be that good in the B10 until they go back to basics and strengthen the point of attack on both sides of the ball, you can have all the skilled 5 star players but it means nothing in football unless you have a full complement of beef. The PAC-12 was the strongest conference last year and SC was average, Oregon above average UCLA was a better team than USC and then there is my team Washington, should have won a national championship but Debore was to concerned about Alabama since November, was was presented with a contract he refused to sign and the Alabama offer was a couple of hundred dollars more. Washington will be a sneaky good in the B18 and Oregon over hyped.

So yeah I believe the seat will get very warm, very quickly for LR. He better figure out how to get his D and O lines fortified in order to play in the big ten. It will be must watch football.
Two things: USC can’t do better and Riley can’t get better. Out recruited by his former team for the second straight year, Riley faces an LSU squad he tried to avoid. An opening loss would be an inaugural salvo for his throne given that an entire season of land mines lurk ahead.

Riley is an idiot and the AD now knows it and he took the steps needed... Sadly Riley won't change his offense forcing the defense to remain somewhat the same... LR has done great things this off-seaso,n putting together a top 5 defensive coaching staff and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the players they've got. Win and recruiting will take care of itself. The Trojans should be in every game, and blowing out many of the B1G on their schedule this season.

Yes, he was gifted Baker. He didn’t “coach” Baker or Kyler up. They were already going to be great QB’s and turned out to be great QB’s. Jalen was a good QB when he walked onto OU turf. Look what he did at Bama. Rattler was the first recruit that Riley brought in. The first. He ended up being ok but not great. Riley made him dump his personal QB coach after the first year and Spencer ended up getting pulled 4 games later. Caleb was already a great talent. What I’m saying is TBOW is NOT a “QB whisper.” His QB’s are only gonna be as good as what they are when they walk on campus. Sorry USC but if TBOW doesn’t have a star quarterback he is not going to do well. Write that down.
