Holy shit that's too funny =)). I bet he couldn't be bothered to learn the solo and was just like "fuck it, I'll just play a bunch of my licks really fast. I bet no one will be able to tell" :D
Dave playing that solo reminds me of when I would get bored while practicing and just try to play as fast as I could without a worry of hitting notes that went together lol
dude, it's simple. when you got Petrucci, let Petrucci do what Petrucci does: Petrucci It! seriously though, they just should've let Petrucci play the solo, he'd probably play it as good as the original record

Not sure, if he could hit the high notes here, because.. let's face it Phil Anselmo was the best in his prime. I would say though, Rob Halford wouldn't have problem hitting the high notes ;))
Allow me to say, even as a huge Megadeth fan I cannot defend that solo. I was brought back here after seeing Dave fuck up with the San Diego orchestra. I seriously don't understand how anyone can defend this. I love Dave's music (at least up to Endgame) and I love his style, but this solo was really really bad and no matter how big of a fan you are of Dave, you should not be able to defend that. You can say it's in his style, but it's a pretty shitty style if it sounds like nothing but a string of guitar hero fuck up noises.
Dream Theater does everyone very well. They've played Metallica, King Crimson, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and many more; Most times they've perhaps outdone the original band...
James Yates you should listen to their bootleg of Dark Side of the Moon, it includes the whole DSOTM and other covers of Queensryche and Deep Purple, I think Queen too :)
Labrie did NOT ruin the vocals. Allen sounded a bit drunk, but still pretty great, yet he only sang the aggressive passive. Labrie sings the beautiful gentle bits as well as blistering screams at the end, because he's the only one there who can do both
some people here complain that DT can't play this song as good as Pantera... don't be frustrated on me, Pantera is one of my favorite bands. but imagine if Pantera covered a song like Under A Glass Moon xD
It's a decent cover. You can tell it's Dream Theater's version, but they don't bastardize it by trying to do something horrifically out of style with the original.
respect, man. you may not like burton's vocals in this song, but then he is not phil. they are totally differen personalities. let phil do fear factory songs and he will be just as awkward.
dave, the answer is because that's not dave typical of solo, he usually play his solo really brutal and out of speed, that's why he seems like he butchered that greatest solo; sorry dime
Everyone is trashing Dave Mustaine for that garbage solo, but can we stop and take a minute to appreciate how perfect everything John Petrucci plays sounds. That guy is unreal, no comparison.
Okay let me tell you all this. Dave plays his solos with a completely different style. Speed and aggression. Dime played his solos with emotional feel mixed with speed. Daves solo wasn't bad, it's just didn't fit in with the song. Just like the cemetery gates solo would've sounded bad in a song like devils island.
Guys, effectively, Petrucci can play it backwards, but there is only one guitar, someone must play rythm (even if Pantera only had one guitarist) .And you are talking about Jordan fucking Rudess, the keyboards god. He acts (and sounds) like a second guitarist in DT, when a solo battle is done,it's Petrucci vs Rudess. Oh, and Rex Brown plays keyboards on original Cemetery Gates.
wouldnt say it sounded good. Love dave mustaine but its off key and just sounds like he didn't learn the solo or what notes to improvise with for that matter.

As good as Mustaine is at writing kickass riffs and as a rhythm player, this video shows why Megadeth always needed a solid lead player.
